Penn Jillette describes motivation behind Desert Bus minigame photo

Recently, Penn Jillette (a comedic genius who does illusionist trickery with his silent partner Teller) illuminated the motivation behind the infamous Desert Bus minigame in the unreleased -- but bootlegged -- Sega CD title Penn & Teller’s Smoke and Mirrors. The purpose of Desert Bus was to recreate the drive from Tucson, Arizona, to Las Vegas, Nevada -- the point being that it took a hell of a long time and nothing interesting happens along the way. In short, it was a joke, like all of the minigames in the ill-fated title.

In this video, promoting a charity event that utilized the videogame to raise money, Penn says that Desert Bus was created to hit back at Janet Reno, who not only demonized fantasy violence in games, but also said that games should teach people real-life skills. Thus, the epic drive from Tuscon to Las Vegas was born and in Penn’s words a “game that was very real-life” was created.

After 8 or so hours, if a player managed to keep his hands on the controller long enough, he would reach Las Vegas and score one point. Then the player would be asked to turn around and drive back. The minigame infinitely loops, which is why the Desert Bus charity event was able to carry on for a little over five days.

Oh god. I kept an eye on the Desert Bus For Hope (2: Bus Harder) twitter for a while. The sheer number of variations on 'kill me now' was astounding.

Truly a legendary game if there ever was one. One of the funniest, worst, and most important games of all time, all at once.

I burned the ISO of this game and played it on my sega CD IT is mind numbing to play.

I think I might make some type of gadget to push right on the d-pad for me at a timed interval, I made one for katamari to rotate the sticks to collect all the roses.

Penn Jillette on my Destructoids? I think I just ejaculated myself.

Also: Dude, "Jillet" is not the preferred nomenclature; "Jillette," please.

Penn and Teller are awesome. "Penn Says" has kept me sane after his radio show went off the air, and Teller has a ZOMBIE video miniseries on the internet called "& Teller." Check 'em out!

That's replay value right there!

Or is that no replay value?

Never played Desert Bus, but I know all about it's infamous gameplay. It really is a joke, and a damn funny one at that.

The terrible thing is that I would probably do the whole drive... I know I would if achievements were involved for sure... Port this to xbox 360!

@VampireChrist
I imagine that, under the right conditions, it could actually be quite enjoyable. Am I right?

@Aertyr: Does what? The charity marathon, or the explanation? Either way, what I was getting at -- the fact that what P&T were getting at with Desert Bus has been known for awhile -- still stands.
