Penile shrinkage imminent: Greenpeace says consoles contain harmful chemicals photo

Greenpeace has definitely earned the reputation of tree-hugging hippies, but that's not always a bad thing -- they've accomplished a lot in the past with their mission to preserve nature. In the last few years however, they seem to be attacking videogames with a determined passion, even going so far as to make a painful PSA about the dangers of gaming -- starring flinch-worthy recreations of some of our favorite characters.

Not content with that fine commercial, Greenpeace continues down the warpath, this time stating that there are chemicals in consoles that may affect sexual development. The recentGreenpeace scientific report, Playing Dirty, shows that consoles contain such dangerous chemicals as polyvinyl chloride, bromine, beryllium and phthalates ... the latter which has shown to interfere with sexual development in mammals. That means you, compadre.

So, is your Wii worth keeping if your junk is at stake?

@Mistic, you and me both buddy, I'm just running out of room ;-p.

Besides, as far as I'm concerned with, consoles are basically made of the same stuff any other electronic is made of. They just choose consoles because they aren't as "necessary" as a computers. When they make a computer or gaming console completely out of hemp and hippie hair, then they can complain.

I think their main point is that these chemicals are harmful, are known to be harmful and could have been replaced by the console makers.

Not too much people can really argue with there, and it's always good to raise awareness of these things. Before I read the previous greenpeace articles, I knew there would be bad shit in these things which circulate the air around my house, I was a little shocked to see quite how much.

They used lab coats and everything.

Also, I suggest people rad the report before assuming things, though I know my plea is a little pointless due to this being the internet.

Played video games ever since I was 4. No problem in the child-producing department...I have two perfectly healthy kids.

Then again, I never ate one of my consoles, controllers, or games...though, I did bite my NES controller sometimes in frustration.

http://www.greenpeace.org/international/news/game-consoles-no-consolation200508

so i went there, only to find this:

"International — Nintendo’s Wii. Sony’s PlayStation 3 Elite. Microsoft’s Xbox 360. They promise a whole new generation of high-definition gaming, but when it comes to the crunch, it’s the same old story. As our search for greener electronics continues, it was time for the game consoles to go to our labs for scientific analysis – and all of them tested positive for various hazardous chemicals."

Nice

These people have no life. If they want real targets how about getting the fluoride out of the drinking water? What about doing something about the fact that there are also pharmaceuticals in most water supplies? Nah, lets go after the important shit like video game consoles being made out of chemicals that might not be good for you if you're dumb enough to grill your Dreamcast and eat it.

Why would these people care about people becoming infertile anyway? As we all know, every time you exhale you are contributing to Global Dooming and we need less people!!!!!!!

Fact of the matter is that most of the stuff out there has some form of hazardous chemical in it in one way or another. People are talking about all the crap that's in your drinking water, but how many people do you see getting sick? The truth about the drinking water is that there are VERY SMALL TRACES of chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and other crap, and it would take a ton more than what's already in the drinking water to affect most people.

No, they're not ecoterrorists, but they are definitely alarmists.

don't get it... do these chemicals become airborne by being around or by the system being used? what's the threat if the chemicals remain in the console, and i rarely ever actually touch the system? my dick has never touched my Ps3, adn somehow i've managed to deny the urge to put my dualshock3 down my pants and play stardust. not that its not sexy as hell, but because my girlriend just wouldn't understand.
my double paned windows have radon in them, should i get rid of them? no, they were designed to keep the radon inside. my tap water has high counts of waste grade flouride in it that was put there by the government should i stop drinking it? Yes, flouride is mind control.

Just like PCs those old consoles pile up somewhere and many have toxic chemicals in them so you know...You can't just burn them all and expect Heaven to absorb the waste. Good news is that Sony has started up some great recycling programs for their obsolete products.

Those chemicals are also used in a variety of household products, and only pose a health risk during the manufacturing process, or when ingested / used internally. I think that gamers' junk will be just fine.

Wardrox summed this up very nicely without all the hype: There are chemicals known to be harmful, and they could have been replaced by the manufacturers. Perfect.

Only about 10% of the people here made comments that make remotely any sense. The plastic and the circuit boards in electronic devices (yes that include video game consoles, PC, cellphones, printers etc. etc. etc.) contain various chemicals/metals that are bad for you health.

The people that should really be concerned though are the countries that receive those waste (also called e-waste, e for electronic) like China, India and various african countries. Where they end up in landfill where people scavange for the precious metals like silver and gold. To do so they will burn most of the plastic and use very acidic liquids.

Here what we have to worry about is how we dispose of our tvs CRT and Flat panels alike. CRT contains insane amount of lead around the tube while each flat panels contains enough mercury to contaminate a small lake for decades.

People that are interested I made a 1 hour presentation on the topic and I would be more than happy to translate it to english (was done in french).

Don't be an ass about the topic, it's really serious indeed.
