There seems to be a lot of premature hate towards the upcoming Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games and I don’t really know why. Sure, the concept is a little ridiculous and there hasn’t been a good Sonic spin-off pretty much ever … and early reports indicate the game could be another waggle-centric mini-game fest … and no videogame based on the Olympics has ever been good … wow, maybe there are a lot of reasons to hate on this game.
But what about the above trailer? It’s so awesome (and, although entirely CG, looks stunning). For a Nintendo fan like myself, the video has it all: Yoshi playing ping-pong, Peach in a swimsuit, Luigi jumping hurdles. Seriously, all it needs is Birdo doing shot put and I would already be sold.
All of the Nintendo-themed sports games have been very fun distractions at the least, so why should this be an exception? Rumors also go that Miyamoto himself had a much bigger hand in the creation of this game than most people think. Call me a Positive Polly, but I think Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games could turn out pretty sweet.
The game will hit the Wii and DS this holiday season to get people ready for the real Olympic Games in Beijing next summer. I may be all alone here, but I can’t wait.

Meet the rest of the team
i'd really just like to see Peach get a little friendly with somebody new...say, Knuckles. That would really put a curl into an Italian moustache or two. That or give the poor thing some girl time with Amy and Cream.
Meh I'm still on the fence about it. Who knows, maybe Miyamoto's touch might have an effect on an Olympics game that includes shoe-horned characters from arguably two of the biggest video game franchises ever. There better be a boxing/Judo/Tae Kwon Do/fencing game where I get to kick some Sonic ass like every Nintendo fanboy's dream. I will admit that the trailer, despite using the new Robotnik design, did give me a little fanboy smirk while I was watching it.
@Dexter345,
Oh, good call: Sonic Spinball was awesome. Let's just say all Sonic spin-offs besidesSonic Spinball were bad (*cough* Shadow the Hedgehog *cough*).
Ok, ok, you got me. I was in the "fence-sitting" camp for a long time of this game, but now I am sold on it.
I have always loved the Mario Sports games. Golf, Tennis, that soccer one, and heck, I even enjoyed Mario Baseball on the few times I played it. They are all great pick-up-and-play-for-a-while titles. I have no doubts this will be super fun to play.
Ahem...NO good Olympic games ever? Track & Field? Athlete Kings? Winter Heat? The latter two were by Sega too, so take that into account.
Now maybe if you meant officially licensed Olympic games I would agree. In the past they have always been passed on to studios that put no soul into the games. About time Sega finally got the official license as they have always deserved it.
Also, this video is beautiful, and further evidence of what a badass Eggman is.
Well at least theres enough side characters between the two franchises to fill the stadium... although I think theres more in the Sonic seats than in the Mario seats.
We all know Sonic is just messing with Mario. In the last 15 yards Sonic is just going to blow past him and then do nothing but stand around and laugh as Mario slowly crosses the finish line.
Wait, wasn't the whole point of Sonic was that he was fast? And cool? I thought that was kinda his thing. Maybe he's just about being lame and having sex with girls now.
Not just Sonic, but tails, shadow, knuckles and so forth could never loose to anyone but eachother in race (and probably most anything involving fast moves for that matter). This game is so rigged!
pheh, nintendo should have stuck to their usual "mario is everything" formula, instead of tieing sonic in it too... I mean, atleast then it would make sense (well as much sense as it ever does)... though i rpoabbly would still like to see sonic in Smash bros... though they would probably still have to nerf his speed; make him as fast as he should be and you'll probably keep running him over cliffs =p
Hmmm, funny how I never noticed this before, but how can Mario and Luigi possibly have brown hair with a black mustache??!?!?! WHAT?!?! How does that work????
With all the money they are throwing around, how about having some real athletes included in this game?
Interested in seeing Sonic running at knee-heighth next to Michael Johnson. I can picture it now ROFL.
C'mon guys...you know Sonic was just fucking with Mario. You know at the end of the race he's gonna win...and then he's gonna punch Luigi in the face and run off to go boink Peach. Sonic is a cocky mofo like that.
the only dude that can possibly keep up with sonic, tails and knuckles is toad. peach should win long jump and luigi should win high jump. and uhh... give ping pong to mario
When I was young lass and didn't know any better, I was pretty obsessed with the Lillehammer Winter Olympics game for the SNES. This doesn't refute your claim that no video game based on the Olympics has ever been good, because in retrospect I can acknowledge that the game was pretty terrible. But an Olympics game might be good under the right circumstances...
...like if you're 9. Or if there's a biathlon involved. Or if you're naive enough to enjoy a game despite its frustratingly terrible gameplay.
Ah. Twas a simpler time.
Oh wait, what was the topic again? Mario and Sonic at the Olympics, you say? Oops.

THINK OF NEW CHARACTERS ALREADY!!!
*passes out from no breath*
I noticed no black contestants.. Shadow busy popping caps?
i still don't get this game. HOW CAN ANYONE BEAT SONIC IN A RACE?!?
oh, and did they actually pay to use the Olympic rings? that shit is expensive yo!
And what do you mean, no good Sonic spin-offs? Sonic Spinball was awesome!
peace not for me.
In conclusion: don't know if want.

This is Sonic from the later years. He's gone clean and has been meth-free for 9 months now!
Yeah, I meant officially licensed Olympics games. I love Track & Field as well. That game is amazing. :)
OMG, I take back everything I said about no good games based on the Olympics. Summer (and Winter) Games were both the shit. Dag, I fail.

Sonic never ran so fast that he took off...
argument over...
*awaits 'blast processing' argument ⌐_⌐*

The game will probably be just another crapfest with waggle and it will most likely sell a bajillion copies because mario and sonic are in it.

i'm buying this game, but because i'm a fanboy of the mario series.
and p.s. mario IS making new characters...just not as fast as they should..imo.
