http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/07/05/pcgaming-trends-2011/ - Boom. Done.
In the U.S., boxed PC sales are about 1.8 billion dollars. Downloadable is 2.5 billion dollars. MMO games are 2.6 billion dollars. Casual websites are 2.8 billion dollars. Social networks (like Facebook/G+) are around 1.8 billion dollars a year.
If you -just- included downloadable and retail (which seems like the most reasonable route), you get 4.3 billion dollars a year. ALL consoles (that includes 360, Wii, PS3, PSP, DS, 3DS, and older consoles!) are 8.0 billion dollars a year.
So yeah, PC isn't bigger than all of console gaming. However, it is easily bigger than any single console, and bigger, by itself, than over half of the console gaming market. This doesn't even include MMOs (which could arguably be included), casual websites, or social network gaming.
Lol, oh yeah you trollin' bro
Stay classy on your $5k PC ^^
Do have to say I appreciated the laugh.
Many of them are fairly new too. I mean, basically, wait 6 months for a game, and Steam will give you a ridiculous price. This is double true if it is anywhere near the holidays.. as that's when Steam gets utterly absurd.
For me as far as my games go I'd say I buy about 1/2 new and 1/2 used. For my used games I usually wait for them to hit $20-$40 dollars before I buy them which takes about 6 months post release. My stack of games to play is pretty high so waiting that long for some of them isn't that big a deal, and if it is something I want now I buy it new anyway.
If you consider the current downturn in the economy, console gaming wins hands down for being cheaper as there is less to invest in the hardware, used games are priced cheaper than intial retail points across the board, and you can trade those games in for credit on newer games to help pay for new titles if your of the type to do such.
Don't have enough time to post to somewhere more reliable than vgchartz, but eh, it's a thing: http://www.vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php
You show me where I can play Hyperdimension Neptunia on the PC and I'll believe that "all the games are available on the PC" :p
Chuckle. Maybe all the ones you care about. :D
Umm.. no.
Like I said, I regularly buy newish, well received games for 5 dollars on the PC. Half decent used console games usually don't run cheaper than 10-15 dollars, and even that is fairly rare.
" I mention the used game market because quite frankly there is a fair amount of console game sales that is part of the used market. "
The original survey I cited (I don't know about the one discussed above) was actually meant to help video game publishers and developers make decisions. As the used game market does not actually go to developers, I'm guessing they don't include it. If used games subsidise new games, as many argue, that should still show up in the new retail sales.
For western games Ill play them on PC, even if the PC ports released slightly later than console by publishers like Ubisoft
You're correct that consoles have a lot of exclusives that the PC does not get to experience (hence why I have both a gaming PC and a PS3), but that's not necessarily an argument in favor of console gaming in and of itself. Thanks to a huge amount of backwards compatibility, PC gaming has a larger and more varied game library than any console that has ever existed. Topping that off, spending $800 on a modern PC will net you a system that blows the PS3 and the Xbox 360 out of the water, as well as giving you the ability to use resource intensive programs such as Photoshop, 3dsmax, Sony Vegas, etc.
I can guarantee you that just about every gaming platform that has ever existed (or will exist) has its own unique advantages and disadvantages and the PC is no exception.
I'm operating on the assumption that you are indeed not trolling but when you spew falsehoods like "$5000 gaming pc," it becomes impossible to take your argument seriously.
dont kid yourself mate, anyone who says PCs are $5k is trolling. The pros and cons of PC gaming get discussed in just about every PC article, so he would have had to been living on mars not to know this
I already acknowledged that there PC doesn't get console exclusives, but that's a no-brainer. There are some great PC exclusives that the consoles will never see. There are games that the PC gets first and the console gets a long time later.
It took four years for consoles to get Crysis and will still be a few more months until the Witcher 2 hits. I've been enjoying Team Meat's new game The Binding of Isaac without you, along with Magicka, Amnesia, and League of Legends. I doubt you'll ever see StarCraft 2, Red Orchestra 2, or Hard Reset.
So.. yeah. It's an argument that can be made on both sides of the fence. That's why people like me have all the systems they need to play all the games they enjoy instead of bashing and disregarding one or another and missing out on some great gaming experiences.
My PC is over two years old, and I can play anything just fine. No, I won't be playing "Ultra High" on anything new, but I don't really care about that. Graphics are not the reason I game on a PC.
My PC cost about $800, with a quad-core Phenom II. Even if I weren't a gamer, I would still own a PC, so you can basically deduct at least $400 from that total, which leaves $400--not all that more expensive than a console.
I also find that buying games on special from all the different digital distributions is cheaper than playing the used game market. No, you can't trade the game in, but you can buy it for a HELL of a lot less if you're patient.
At the worst, it's break-even. If you're clever enough to wait for holidays, though, I have little down that PC gaming is actually cheaper.
That said, the PC catches an awful lot of shit on Dtoid, and it's only the last few months that PC gaming has been taken seriously here.
That people are happy when a game or a platform they like is selling well is perfectly normal, as is being sad when something you think is good doesn't sell so well.
But getting mad because a game/platform you either don't like or simply don't use is doing well is so fucking idiotic.
oh, right, the console kiddies who like to cry about dumb shit.
Excluding MMOs out of game sales is something only hardcore consolejizzgasmers could come up. Also, there are MMOs on consoles, and they are shit.
I'm not a pc "elitist" or something. I have every major console this generation, and love each one of them (except that white dead piece of plastic called wii), also I got a moderate gaming rig. I can pick my platform of choice. And nowadays its mostly PC for multiplatform games (cheaper/smoother/better looking/mods etc...).
Where the hell did they get the game prices from?
Since when has NCAA football one of the biggest selling console games? Plus its been out a fraction of the time SC2 has been out.
I'd say that PC gaming and console gaming are both good, because the games on them are good. They're just a means to an end.
also, yes, im sorry console kids but unfortunately social gaming and mmo's DO count.
hey, unless we can just arbitrarily discount games like gears, halo, god of war, uncharted, or mario and zelda games.
exactly :P
and oh people there's always a CHOICE :P
you are not limited to consoles and PC. you have handhelds, mobile phones tons of other things :P
remember having a choice is always good :P
while i enjoy my MGS, Uncharted, Catherine, Dark Souls, KOFXIII and tons more on consoles :P
choice people!!!!
My guess would be that now with consoles starting to show their age next to PCs, people stand to gain much more than they did previously by switching to PC gaming. When the new generation of consoles eventually hits I'm sure the trend would then reverse as people flock to the new systems getting all the support from publishers.
If we had data showing a few more years back we'd be able to see if this is what happened last time. My guess is; it did.
Like really, only non-gamers would spout stuff like 'lol pc dying consoles 4 life'
lol pcs are killing consoles
lol mobile gaming is killing handhelds
Would anyone who has said anything remotely like those three statements kindly shut the fuck up and just play video games? Seriously.
also people spend 8 hours a day on a pc because you do way more on a pc than a console. so of course you will spend more time on it.
also what @teffy said.
