PC version of Left 4 Dead to receive update next week photo

According to the official Left 4 Dead blog, a two new downloads for the PC version of Left 4 Dead are dropping next week. The move is curious considering Valve hates their fans (and their mothers) and apparently officially abandoned Left 4 Dead the second its successor was announced at E3 2009. Oh well.

The first download is an update. It’s is a two-head monster of sorts, geared towards making custom map sharing easier on users via tweaks and additions to the game’s UI and matchmaking system. Content creators will be able to package their stuff into a lone .VPK package, allowing potential players to easily access the content by double-clicking on a file. In this vein, players will also be able to access the created content in the “Extras” drop down menu in the game. Matchmaking will get a new “Add-on campaign” option, allowing potential players who have downloaded something awesome like the Racoon City mod to find each other for a game.

Valve will also officially release the “Authoring tools slash SDK” next week with some improvements thanks to beta feedback.

If you need more details about the downloads, feel free to visit the Left 4 Dead blog. It’s not full of lies and pictures of Stephen Baldwin, as we were led to believe. But before you adventure elsewhere, tell us what you think about all of this in the comments section. Valve is obviously looking to make custom maps a big part of the Left 4 Dead experience, and even better, making them accessible to people who otherwise wouldn’t have known. Pretty hip, we think.

I've always wanted to try making my own custom maps. I think I may give it a shot when the update comes around. I have no experience with this but the best way to learn is to try it out. Now I need ideas... Left 4 Katamari? I wish.

Haha, Brad you better stop with the sarcasm towards the boycott retards or AngryJoe will make a video :P

(Did he actually make that last one? Anyone know? He got pretty irate at Hamza and Jim when they took the piss out of them)

Anyway, this really does make all that boycott crap seem irrelevant doesn't it?

Like I said last night in the post about Raccoon City coming to L4D, it's time for me to finally buy the PC version of L4D. I hope it goes on sale on Steam soon....

The whole reason I got L4D on the PC was for the free online playing and the mods. I can't wait to play that Resident Evil level and the re-imagining of the Mall from Dawn of the Dead. And any other custom levels for that matter. It's going to rock

There's no pictures of Stehpen Baldwin because they abandoned him and are working on Left 4 Baldwin 2.

best thing for L4D would be the classic Server Browser option like TF2...but why Valve WHY?????

They finally come around with a few updates (after the boycott) that let others do some level making work for them? Hmm....::strokes chin::

Nevertheless, I still like Valve, it's just obvious what's going on here.

Oh yeah its real obvious. Except they've been saying the planned on releasing DLC from the get go and Valve is pretty true to their word.

Love me some updates. =P If Microsoft wasn't such a pain we'd probably see more of this good shit on the Box.

Haha... They're releasing the tools because of the boycott? SERIOUSLY???

Let me guess... Bethesda released the G.E.C.K. because some purists hated Fallout 3? Oh, or Diablo 3 will get an expansion sometime after it's released because people complained about the art style?

They've been planning this for a while now, its not some "oh shit people are mad at us! Better throw them a bone!" I for one, welcome our Valve overlords.

Yeah, and last month's huge batch of Team Fortress 2 content only came out because they announced Team Fortress 3 and fans lost their shit. Yep. Totally what's happening here.

Way to show your immaturity Mozgus!

What the fuck do you want from these companies? They are in it to make money! Valve has been one of the nicest and most supportive to it's community for a long time, and this is the way assholes like you act when they do ONE FUCKING THING you don't like.

I pray to Valve that they add a tiny part to the update that fucks with the game for people in the "I hate L4D2" group.

You know, something silly like all the walls say "Valve hates whiners like you," or "Eat a dick, whiner," something silly and mean. I would shit an airplane.

I'm still stunned by the stupidity of many gamers (everyone in the boycott). It's absolutely staggering.

I remember back in the day when a gamer had his ickle feeling hurt he cut you down like a ninja with his/her razor sharp sarcasm. Modern gamers now crawl on the floor crying like professional footballers.

I love the "all companies are good for is to make money so it's ok" speech. Really, Valve never engaged in business practices like this before, had tons of universal respect, and did just fine with their numerous game of the year awards. Sure, ultimately I agree with the fact that Valve can do whatever they want, but that doesn't instantly make it "100% ok".

Where were you people when Beautiful Katamari had their unlocks? Or when Capcom announced the Versus DLC for $5? Bitching at them, because you hated them. In this case, it's the "golden boy", Valve, so it's ok, right?

This is impossible! Valve abandoned L4D1. This must be some sort of pre-update for L4D2.

@Magnalon - I wholeheartedly agree with your observation that Valve is trying new things. A boatload of money from a console success would do that to any company, including Valve.

So the continued support of L4D is for the community to create more movies? So just like every other game coming out in the last few months I'm going to have to comb through a bunch of crap to find the gold.

I guess this update really isn't for me, just the would-be modders trying to be the next turtle rock, etc. Thanks Valve.

Very good point: I suppose this is the dark before the eclipse then. If Valve ever pulls unlocks or other such methods, it'll be a sad day.

I hope Valve doesn't release Half-Life 2: Episode 3. They would be abandoning Half-Life 2: Episode 3. VALVE SUCKZ MAJOR BALLZ!!!!!!! (I used caps, and that makes my opinion matter more.)

Actually, Magnalon, I don't play katamari so I don't care.

And I disliked the price of RE5 DLC, so I didn't buy it.

But that's DLC.

This is a brand new game.

Do you have a problem with me or something? I don't get it, seems like you're always disagreeing with me just for the hell of it.

This is not a coincidence because of boycott... this is Valve being themselves and doing what they do best- making gamers happy.
