According to the official Left 4 Dead blog, a two new downloads for the PC version of Left 4 Dead are dropping next week. The move is curious considering Valve hates their fans (and their mothers) and apparently officially abandoned Left 4 Dead the second its successor was announced at E3 2009. Oh well.
The first download is an update. It’s is a two-head monster of sorts, geared towards making custom map sharing easier on users via tweaks and additions to the game’s UI and matchmaking system. Content creators will be able to package their stuff into a lone .VPK package, allowing potential players to easily access the content by double-clicking on a file. In this vein, players will also be able to access the created content in the “Extras” drop down menu in the game. Matchmaking will get a new “Add-on campaign” option, allowing potential players who have downloaded something awesome like the Racoon City mod to find each other for a game.
Valve will also officially release the “Authoring tools slash SDK” next week with some improvements thanks to beta feedback.
If you need more details about the downloads, feel free to visit the Left 4 Dead blog. It’s not full of lies and pictures of Stephen Baldwin, as we were led to believe. But before you adventure elsewhere, tell us what you think about all of this in the comments section. Valve is obviously looking to make custom maps a big part of the Left 4 Dead experience, and even better, making them accessible to people who otherwise wouldn’t have known. Pretty hip, we think.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
(Did he actually make that last one? Anyone know? He got pretty irate at Hamza and Jim when they took the piss out of them)
Anyway, this really does make all that boycott crap seem irrelevant doesn't it?
Nail head hit.
Assholes.
*shakes fist*
Nevertheless, I still like Valve, it's just obvious what's going on here.
Let me guess... Bethesda released the G.E.C.K. because some purists hated Fallout 3? Oh, or Diablo 3 will get an expansion sometime after it's released because people complained about the art style?
Yeah, and last month's huge batch of Team Fortress 2 content only came out because they announced Team Fortress 3 and fans lost their shit. Yep. Totally what's happening here.
What the fuck do you want from these companies? They are in it to make money! Valve has been one of the nicest and most supportive to it's community for a long time, and this is the way assholes like you act when they do ONE FUCKING THING you don't like.
You know, something silly like all the walls say "Valve hates whiners like you," or "Eat a dick, whiner," something silly and mean. I would shit an airplane.
I love the "all companies are good for is to make money so it's ok" speech. Really, Valve never engaged in business practices like this before, had tons of universal respect, and did just fine with their numerous game of the year awards. Sure, ultimately I agree with the fact that Valve can do whatever they want, but that doesn't instantly make it "100% ok".
Where were you people when Beautiful Katamari had their unlocks? Or when Capcom announced the Versus DLC for $5? Bitching at them, because you hated them. In this case, it's the "golden boy", Valve, so it's ok, right?
@Magnalon - I wholeheartedly agree with your observation that Valve is trying new things. A boatload of money from a console success would do that to any company, including Valve.
*Fact
I guess this update really isn't for me, just the would-be modders trying to be the next turtle rock, etc. Thanks Valve.
Very good point: I suppose this is the dark before the eclipse then. If Valve ever pulls unlocks or other such methods, it'll be a sad day.
And I disliked the price of RE5 DLC, so I didn't buy it.
But that's DLC.
This is a brand new game.
Do you have a problem with me or something? I don't get it, seems like you're always disagreeing with me just for the hell of it.
Really? I actually agree with you a ton, I guess you don't re-read a lot of articles. There was one time where I defended you for 20 comments when CottonMcKnight bashed you incessantly. You're actually one of my favorite community members! I guess we just see differently on some issues. By "where were you people" though, I didn't mean just you!
This is not a coincidence because of boycott... this is Valve being themselves and doing what they do best- making gamers happy.
