PC version of GTA IV unedited in Australia photo

Grand Theft Auto IV, like most videogames in Australia, received edits in order to get its MA15+ rating from the Australian Office of Film and Literature Classification. However, in a rare case of PC gamers getting a little extra love, it turns out that the home computer version of GTA IV is to hit store shelves without edits.

"Grand Theft Auto IV PC has been rated MA15+ strong violence, sex scenes, coarse language, and drug references by the Australian Classification Office. The PC game is unedited in any way and identical in content to the international version," confirmed a Rockstar rep.

Quite why the PC version gets off the hook is unclear. We do know that the edits made to the console version were wholly voluntary on the part of Rockstar, so maybe it turns out that those edits were unnecessary. It's also not been announced whether console versions will be updated to match their international counterparts, but I imagine it won't be worth Rockstar's time after all these months.

F.E.A.R 2, however, was recently refused a rating and will not be available to Australia gamers, just in case you thought the country had suddenly grown some balls in terms of game classification.

What the fuck? This just goes to show how much of a joke our ratings system is.

By crikey!
I wonder if the fact it's on PC rather than a console avoids the stigma of being in the hands of children.

Of course, in reality we know this is bollocks because kids play pc games ..but just a thought.

Forget Waltzing Matilda, the unofficial theme should be replaced with something along the lines of, "Beating the Seppos with abstract rules of censorship and backwards logic." I'm sure it's on some Tom Waits b-side.

Did you see Atkinson on good game try to make out that video games were more harmful than movies or any other media and that's why there should be no R18+ rating. Utter shit.

I was gonna comment on the FEAR 2 ban...looks like they must have reached their baning quota early this quarter.

It appears that ignorance isn't always consistent, bonus for PC gamers :)

Shows that our Classification Board smokes some really top shelf stuff when it comes to making decisions.

Fallout 3 gets shitcanned for Morphine...yet choosing your hooker services in GTA IV is a-ok...

I hate this country sometimes...

maybe the board realise that people'd just pirate it if it were edited?

*shakes head* I just don't understand why the OFLC is so uptight and stingy with all this. I mean we're fucking Australians! WE DON'T CARE ABOUT ANYTHING!! So why care about ratings for videogames and refuse classifications for some?
