Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Following a dinner with some media this evening, Epic's Mark Rein stood up from his table and announced that he had to get going ... he was going to go home and post on the Epic forums about an Unreal Tournament III demo. Midway PR and other Epic employees shot him the hairy eyeball, as if to say "Are we supposed to be talking about that yet?".

But Mark is unstoppable, and he wasn't kidding:

Just wanted to give you a heads' up that we're getting pretty close to releasing the Unreal Tournament 3 Beta Demo for Windows. The Beta Demo will allow instant action play against bots as well as online multiplayer. The purpose of the Beta Demo is to test the game on a large variety of hardware configurations and get gameplay feedback from the community. The development team feels they're pretty close to being ready to release this so it could come out this week but for safety sake I'd say it should be out within two weeks.

I'll be rolling out of bed tomorrow, and heading on over to Epic's offices to get some hands-on time with this supposed demo. I'm also told we might get a little peek at the mysterious single-player campaign, which is said to be Epic's most ambitious Unreal single-player experience to date (four-player co-op, baby!).

Be sure to check back later in the week for my full impressions, and reports on how poorly my Unreal Tournament III-related s**t talking to Epic employees turned out.

If they're releasing a beta now, when it was nearly released, they must have fucked it up big time.

I am psyched for UT3 and I don't think it will disappoint. Can't wait to hear what your impressions are. Hopefully my machine can run it well.

They're calling it a beta, but it's really just a large-scale demo.

And as for the min specs for the game, they're actually on par with those of Unreal Tournament 2004 (or so I was told this evening -- you can do a search for the specs on Dtoid; they were announced a few days ago).

Heh, picture looks just like Gears of War.

I can't wait to see what the campaign is gonna look like!

Although, that is not where the next 2-3 years of my life are going to be spent...it's all about the DM!

I hope they go back to their roots with this one. All this capture points and vehicle malarkey takes away from the spirit of UT. The first game was the original hyper-twitch multiplayer shooter.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say that was Gears of War 2. That mess looks exactly the same, yoh.

It certainly looks like an Unreal Engine 3 game, but doesn't look like Gears of War. The architecture, weapon design, and character's clothing look nothing like Gears. The color palette isn't even that similar!

I agree with Alex. "Red" is not that much of a different color palette swap.

The dudes may not be as visibly jacked as the Gears squad, but the over-sized armor certainly appears similar to that of the Locusts.

Don't kid yourselves, Gears played off Unreal and now Unreal is paying back the favor. I'm not complaining, simply stating.

When Epic creates a game that doesn't involve aliens and big guns and over the top meat heads THAT'S when I'll be impressed. Their games are fun, they are just a little bit derivative is all. Nothing wrong with it, but don't deny it.

I'm just above minimum.

This will be a good chance to see how well my box handles it.

gears played off unreal 3 and vice versa because epic made them both, with the same engine...
But yes! a demo with bots! i love you epic!

I know, lots of different stuff. But looking at the design of the first middle guy: beefy marine with tons of armor (with circular headrest area) and big gun looks enough like Gears of War to be similar to me. I guess I just felt like criticizing Western character design.

@ Nick Chester

Dude, common. That picture looks like the Gears guys with new armor. They even have that same huge boot thing. It even has that washed out color Gears has.

Fucking Marcus swapped armor with the Locust.

You know how I said if I didn't know any better? I asked someone who doesn't. His answer? "Is that Gears of War 2?"

And that's not saying anything bad, man. Gears still impresses me, but a little change in scenery would of been cute, no?

Damn that looks like Gears - not that that's a bad thing.

Unfortunately I can't remember its name, but there's a new mode in UTIII that looks really awesome.

I really hope the single player campaign is good, if it's not, I probably won't shell out just for multiplayer. Although I still haven't played resistance singleplayer (non co-op mode), only multiplayer.

Am I the only one here that sees the IRONY of calling Unreal Tournament a "Gears lookalike?"

Unreal Tournament has used large, futuristic, armor suits since 1999... (UT)

If anything, the Gears look was pulled from a gritty version of Unreal Tournament. Now that the new UT is coming out using the same engine(note that it's the UNREAL ENGINE), it makes sense that the models will look alike.

If your gonna complain about anything, complain that Gears ripped off UT, this has been the Unreal Tournament style and look since long before Gears was even conceived. I would be pissed if they took it any other way...

Nyte, you are incredibly right. As someone whose favorite shooter has been UT since 2000, I should have thought of that in the first place...

Back when trailers my friends were showing me Gears of War trailers I asked "Is this Unreal Tournament?"

Anyway, UT won't be just limited to musclehead humans in ridiculous amounts of armor. You should expect members from a slew of different races-- robots, aliens, humans, the Necris, maybe even some furry things if they kept all the races from 2004. As for the demo, I'm not sure, as the UT2004 demo only had 4 player models, all human.
