You often tread the line of tacit endorsement of piracy. It is certainly provocative, but is it a reasonable long-term strategy?
Do you have a real stance on this issue, or do you just use the innuendo that "Company X had it coming from the pirates so good on em" to increase page impressions?

It's more sad, I think, that DICE is partnering with EA at all. Without fucking shit like the online pass, EA having its own required account, and requiring DICE to use EAs shitty dedicated server platform...The launch could have been much smoother and reached more people.
EA fucked up the launch BIG TIME, and a fantastic game is paying the price for it.

@Stahl - You realize this is a tweak for retail copies of the game. I'm sure this *can* work pirated copies, but that's never even mentioned in the article. People who paid for the game should be allowed to do this, so comparisons to security breaching hacking don't match.
I didn't know downloading a hack that takes Origin off of Battlefield 3 = pirating. Guess I'll have to revise my definition of pirating.

@Stahlbrand: I find this subject rather interesting (it's a great ethics vs. capitalism study), and Jim has written some stuff on the subject before. However, you'll notice he's careful here to not actually pass any judgement here. He mentions he can understand where the hackers are coming from, and touches a bit on the likely motivating factors behind the action, but he never actually approves or disapproves of anything. I just wanted to point that out since a lot of people here can't seem to tell the difference between a news post and an opinion post.
Do people understand the difference between pirate and hacker? A pirate steals content, a hacker modifies content. It pretty clearly explains in the article that this is a fix for copies of BF3 that were BOUGHT AT RETAIL. Meaning that they were paid for. I for one am going to check this out as soon as I get home. origin is pretty pointless right now, maybe one day it will compete with steam and all with be good, but that is not now.
But the fact that legitimate customers are wanting a solution like this, should be sending EA a pretty clear message, although I am sure that they dont see it that way.

So this hacked executable circumnavigates the Origin service, but then it also presumably lets the hackers and pirates get around Punk Buster and other systems that keep players honest.

I dunno, not sure I can support something like this. Origin hate is fine and I get that PC BF3 players don't want to use it, but I don't think hacking the game is the answer. These people are still thieving scumbags.

See here's the thing, the real argument here, is that this isn't just for playing the game for free, which people seem to believe;
It's for people who actually bought the game to be able to play it without Origin; and hell, this makes me kinda want to buy a copy so I can get around the trojan horse that EA's trying to market.

Look, Razor911 is a big name on thepiratebay, the reason the hack gets around Origin authentication is so that any fuckstick can download the ISO image, slip in the hacked executable, and play online without purchasing the game.
Don't even trip with that 'its not for pirates' bullshit. Pirate Bay has several listings, with hundreds and hundreds of seeds for BF3 ISOs already bundled with this Origin hack.

I need to look around and see if there is a similar way to get rid of the Steam client. If I want to shop for games or look at ads then I'll do that when I want, not right before I want to play a game. I can't even exit the stupid thing without it freezing up.

@tristrix: Am I missing something? How is a hack eliminating the necessity of Origin to play a purchased game stealing? Granted hacks can have very negative affects on games and cheating, but this is a different matter, no?

Since the days of nocd cracks saving you the hassle of switching disc, i've been completely for these patches.

This workaround supposedly doesn't work on the pirate version of BF3, so the arguments of "this is still piracy" and "ZHE THIEVESS" seem to be unfounded. Hell, if you look on The Pirate Bay there is no such thing as hundreds of bundled pirate versions with this new crack. You apparently still need to login to Battlelog, so...
Not to mention it was released as INTERNAL, not that that ever stopped anyone from spreading it to P2P.

I sadly stopped playing PC games (BF2 did me in), for the most part, because of how easy it was to cheat and hack. Aim botters are the worst thing in the world.
