Of course, there are about 97 other games coming out this year that that screenshot (minus the HUD) could have been taken from, so they'll need to do something special to differentiate themselves...
You just interested me in this game.
For the record, multiplayer can be implemented when it's a side show, like Dead Space 2. But if a developer honestly wants to cash in on the multiplayer, then by all means leave the single player out, because it is obviously going to suffer.
Agreed. Unless they have a separate team do the multiplayer. I don't mind so much if they have the resources and money to do that and still come out with a quality SP campaign and engaging MP mode.
I'm more in it for the co-op rather than generic Deathmatch modes, or CTF. I want more inventive and fun MP these days. Gimme some kind of ridiculous Tag Mode or competitive obstacle course with 7 other players and I'm in heaven.
While I agree that SP FPS games with tacked on multiplayer tend to make the SP worse, I can't say I will every buy a SP-only FPS game at full price in my life unless the SP has real legnth and substance to it (like Deus Ex 1), and/or is very replayable in some kind of non-linear interesting take on the genre.
There just isn't any value for "linear" campaign style SP only FPS games to me anymore. I'm not dropping $50 on a game that lasts me only 10 hours before I move on to the next thing and forget about it. Perfect modern example: Metro 2033. So glad I got that game for $12 versus full price. It's a pretty good game but playing through some SP for 10 hours and then being completely done with very little replay incentive made it worth much less than full price to me. Not to mention the game wasn't flawless - it had minor issues that made it sit nicely at the "Pretty Decent Game" mark. And for an SP only game that where do all you can do after about 10 hours of playing, that simply isn't good enough for full price to me.
A good example of an SP only FPS game that feels like it has full price value would be the STALKER series to me. Very open ended games that let you handle your conflicts at your own pace and own approaches, and very immersive. It helps the games are all mod-friendly too, which massivly boosts replay value. Is it possible to get value out of an SP only game that is a linear experience? Of course! HL2 for example was great. However, to me, such a game isn't worth full price or would be more worth it if bundled with other games and experiences (Orange Box for example).
