Ubisoft has announced that the upcoming PC version of Assassin's Creed will finally be available at retail this March.

Although late, the PC version of the title is not just any old Assassin's Creed. No, no -- this one is the Assassin's Creed: Director's Cut Edition, which features four brand new exclusive types of investigations. There's no word on what these new investigation types will be; the console versions feature things like pickpocketing, various informer missions, eavesdropping, and smacking around dudes in back alleys for information.  (Which is not as naughty as it sounds.)

One of the biggest issues many people had with the game when it hit consoles was the lack of game variety. I just recently pushed through Assassin's Creed on the Xbox 360, and despite the lack of things to actually do, scaling the various locations of the Third Crusade was reasonably entertaining. I'm not sure if slapping on a few extra investigation types will change anyone's mind on the lack of variety, but it's a nice extra for PC gamers who've been patient this long.

Wait a minute ... no one is going to be able to play this! Have you seen the specs for this monster?!?

If you don't have a dual-core CPU, hand in your badge. A certain Black Edition CPU is only $100.

And as far as graphics... hey, I heard S3's MultiChrome runs Crysis with a pair of S27's.

New investigation types would be nice. It's a shame nobody will be able to play it until Skynet becomes self-aware.

Boo hoo hoo system requirements! :'(

*Supported Video Cards at Time of Release:
ATI RADEON X1300-1950 / HD 2000 / 3000 series
NVIDIA GeForce 6600-6800 / 7 / 8 / 9 series

Seriously, if you don't have a videocard like that, you're not a PC gamer. Or your PC is several years old. Same argument for the processor.

However, this game doesn't look that good to begin with, so my guess is Ubisoft is too lazy to optimize its code properly.

They need to release this extra content as DLC for 360 and PS3. It would definitely get me to pop the disc back in and replay the game. Plus, no one who owns a PC will buy it 'cause they won't be able to play it anyway. They're gonna needa make money on it somehow...

I blogged[/url about this awhile back. The specs are truly mind blowing. Anybody with a PC that sweet has better things to do then play Assassins Creed.

Lol @ MechaMonkey.

Well, considering that my laptop almost certainly couldn’t run Half-Life, this isn’t a concern for me anyway.

Wow those are some impressive specs. You think they'll make these new investigations downloadable content for console versions?

What is this nonsense about nobody being able to play this? My system certainly bests those specs. In fact, most of the PC gamers that I play with can play this game.

Both Destructoid and Kotaku seem to lack journalists who are PC gamers ... at the very least, both sites imply that the specs for this game are insane, but the PC gamers I know have been beyond these specs for months, and anyone who isn't, is on the verge of an upgrade...

This sucks and is kinda unfair to console gamers. First PC Gears of War has new content, and now this.

What's so hardcore about those requirements? My PC that's about 1.5 years old beats it out on all counts. Let alone what a current PC would do to this game.

Another site compared the PC version of AC to Crysis a while back, specs-wise. Its requirements are actually higher than freaking Crysis, in a number of areas.

@ Paul:

I can't argue with you. I am certainly not a PC gamer. We have a few on the staff, but it's definitely a niche I'm looking to fill. Anyone thing they have the chops to be a Destructoid PC guy? Private message or email me.

Sweet. My PC will handle that - Athlon X2 5200+ and GeForce 8600GTS w/ 640 MB RAM on it.

If any of you have an AM2-based motherboard, the Athlon X2 5400+ (65-watt version) is less than $100 and 2 GB of RAM is less than $50 nowadays. Yes, yes, I know that it's easy to just throw prices around when it's other people's money, but the point is that it's not all that difficult to get a decent gaming rig upgrade for less than $200.

Also,

Did all of you who say you can run it notice that it requires Dual Layer DVD drive?

They aren't hard to come by, but the DL DVD drives aren't exactly common.

Unless you've got a REALLY, REALLY old system, dual-layer is not a problem. The whole thing with DL recently is for WRITING, not READING. Just about DVD drive made in the past several years should read dual-layer discs without a problem.

It doesn't matter that a number of people can run it, the specs are still insane.

Why? They're higher than Crysis', and the game doesn't even come close to Crysis in terms of quality.

New investigation type one: tickle fest. You tickle your adversary until they piss their pants, and refuse to give them new pants until they talk. This is done by repeatedly pressing the '8' key on your keyboard.

New investigation type two: humiliation. You spread rumors about your target to all of his closest friends. Gay rumors. Your target is so disgraced he dismembers a part of his body. Part is random, and may include penis.

New investigation type three: You ask the guild of assassins where you left your glasses. The entire time your glasses are on your head. This has no effect on the game at all.

New investigation type four: Water Boarding your target's family members. What? It's not torture! You do this by leaving the game and signing up for the army.

Dynamic Sheep: Lol. As in, I actually laughed out loud, not the polite but meaningless lol.

Sure the system requirements are stupidly high, and I hope they go down over time, but will minimum settings still look good? Some games really don't look THAT terrible on lower settings, and if Assassin's creed is one of them I may check it out.

Echoing AKK: It's worse than Crysis! Why is it worse than Crysis? Are they injecting 600 ccs of Awesome Juice or are they just lazy?

And 3GB recommended? Is that implying that processes might hit the 2GB cap, or would have actually crossed it? At least that would have been a VALID reason to go Vista Exclusive, unlike some games *coughHalo2cough*

What is awesome is that the specs mention that "our copy protection is going to be more invasive than an unsolicited prostate exam, so don't be shocked if it blows up your DVD drive".

While my PC certainly has the chops to run what looks to be a bloated and unpolished port like Ubis last few PC offerings, knowing that its going to have the sort of copy protection that requires me to send photos of the game disc pressed up against my scrotum to their main office makes me a sad panda.

At least the pirate community will fix this oversight and release an .exe that works with all dvd drives.

This game desperately needs this. The new sidequests should help to relieve the games biggest problems, its lack of variety and repetitive gameplay.

If i get good performance with the game i won't give a shit about the specs. Double Agent was unforgiveable so hopefully Ubisoft has learnt how to code a bloody LOD. I'm a total thicky when it comes to how games work, but the unstable performance of Double Agent brings to mind that it was rendering what it didn't need to and m..e..m..o..r..y leaks (several times the game crash because xfire hates it when theres a chance the game might cause windows to start *thrashing* which for those who don't know is when the processor spends too much CPU time swapping between different processes and not enough time actually processing them). That game was torture with literally no noticable performance difference between max or low settings. Ofcourse i could be entirely wrong in which case, flame the fuck out of me.
