PC as lead platform made Battlefield 3 better on consoles photo

In a recent interview with PC Gamer, Battlefield 3 executive producer Patrick Bach said that “Our biggest benefit for the console has been that we’re leading on PC. It has forced us to push the limited technology of consoles compared to the PC to a new level, because we set the bar with what we wanted to create on PC and said, ‘How the heck are we going to do this on consoles?’”

By developing Battlefield 3 on the PC first, DICE was able to focus on making the game powerful and very pretty. Once the time came to start making things work on consoles, they were forced to streamline everything. I've seen it running on a high-end PC and it looks really amazing, but that said, it doesn't look too shabby on consoles either.

Great to see consoles and PCs getting along and benefiting each other.

I've always thought this, not just for PC but also PS3 against 360.

I know the PS3 being a bitch to code for has it's issues, bit I've always thought they should aim for the highest quality market possible and downscale as little as possible for the rest.

PC & consoles = BFFs

Except the Wii. Nobody cares about that underpowered guy and his underpoweredness.

If only everyone else took this approach. Still, why innovate with a new graphics engine or whatever when you can continually get away with pumping the same old tired stuff out?

I wonder if they will bring this to the Wii U?

wouldnt it be better to make it best for the console then upgrade everything for the pc version? instead of going backwards and downgrading it?

i have no idea about programing, just wondering.

I wonder if BF3 would have gotten all the praise it did if it still liked like bad company 2. I care a lot more about gameplay progress in a series over graphics. I'd like to know how leading on the PC helped improve gameplay.

It's a lot easier to scale the graphics and player cap down from the PC version than it is to scale it up from the console. You rarely hear about console games being shitty PC ports, it's always the other way around.

Its the engine that these guys make that matters. Give em enough time with their talent, they give us something awesome. Unlike another franchise that uses someone else's work to churn out an annual cash-in.

@Soulcage: I do. But the only other console I own (and love) is a PS2, so maybe I'm not the best judge.

What The Nakedest says is pretty spot on, but if you want to look at it another way, it's easier to plan around having all these features, then cut them out, than it is to plan around not having them, THEN having to build them.

If it's already in the schedule, it can get built, and can easily be dropped for the systems that can't use it.

If every developer isn't doing this, they should be. Make your product pretty and shiny and then bump it down for the consoles. Their technology is extremely dated. It won't matter what it looks like on consoles(to a reasonable degree) because those playing console games aren't as concerned about what it will look like.

PC then Console port is the best way, it raises the bar for both versions

As MrFunsockz states imo a bit reason why so many console to pc ports are crap is because the console port takes up most of the devs schedule with the PC version hastily botched together with features that PC gamers expect to see missing. (bad UI, bugs, non existant GFX options)

RAGE is a good example of this

So theyre saying they didnt develop the console versions for the console, they just ported the PC version and gimped it until it was playable? Right.

Not that Im saying thats a bad thing, I think games should be played on the platform they were primarily designed for. In the case of BF3, that would be the PC. But console games designed for consoles make better console games than PC ports.

This is how it always should be, unless the game is developed only for consoles. You always start with the most powerful platform available, for reasons which The Nakedest and MrFunsockz mentioned.

I guess exceptions to the rule could be games in which the graphics aren't a big concern from the get go, but for a game like BF3 it wouldn't make a bit of sense otherwise.

Except wasn't the optimization for consoles pretty poor? The graphics seemed pretty must compared to even BC2, and definitely worse than Crysis 2. I absolutely hate the shitty console-to-pc ports of norm, and I never would play shooters on a console, so I don't really care..

But I don't think this particular example would get me excited for certain action games that I prefer on consoles.

Anyone saying Bf3 is pretty much equivalent to BC2 has clearly not played the game and promptly be disregarded.

It seems like a good deal, for the PC.

The PS360 version is still a butchered mess.

This makes me laugh because there's id Software talking about how putting resources into maxing the PC as a waste due to consoles and here DICE is saying the exact opposite.

Just goes to show you that even different companies have varying viewpoints on the PC and console platforms.

BF3 holds up well on 360, screw the PC elitists spewing their shit. The game looks damn good and plays just as well aside from a few hiccups also present in the PC version.

Aside from the player cap and lower resolutions, the game is exactly the same on 360 as it is on PC, I applaud them for that. But people will always finds things to bitch about, I guess.

I'm having a great time with it.

I find that funny as the game itself seems to be not at all dissimilar to BC2. If I'm not mistaken BF3 also doesn't look quite as good as BC2 does. Not that I ever notice in the heat of the battle.

Still a very fun game though, and that's all that matters to me. Consoles really have pushed me to the 'dark side' of FPS gaming these last few years. I just can't be bothered with keeping up with the latest system requirements, newest driver patches, etc. ad nauseum. Yeah, I like having a box that just works without me having to worry about all that nonsense.

PC gaming has evolved into a strict GOG/indie fare for me these days.

The PC version has some pretty shitty mouse controls. As the kind of person that uses high mouse DPI and a low in-game sinsitivity, I've noticed that the game actually caps the speed at which your mouse can move depending on the sensitivity chosen in-game. This mean that moving your mouse really fast will actually move the camera less than if you had moved the mouse slowly by the same amount.

No, RAW mouse input does nothing, neither does disabling the mouse drivers, video settings or modifying the settings file.

Battlefield 3 is a console game from the ground up. The only PC thing is the graphics, other than that the game plays like a console game. They try to lie through their teeth.

This game looks pretty damn good on the PS3, especially when you factor in the scale and amount of destruction and effects going on. I'd say it's on par with Crysis 2 and more fun to play.

Its the same thing concept when a new game is too powerful for your pc. First crank it to 11, and then if its running slow you have to start turning things off until it runs smoothly

on PC, once you are into the game, it is pretty amazing. it is everything leading up to that point that sucks. I cannot compare it to the console version yet, but my roomate is buying it fo r360, so i will get to compare soon.

This is really cool. A great example of what he's talking about is Half-Life 2 on the original xbox. They managed to preserve 100% of that game and make it work on a console with 64mb of ram, it was fantastic.

@Humtuk 360 version (though it's probably the same in consoles in general) just looks and functions better. Now, I can say that Battlelog's server browser is very superior but choice would have been the way to go (even so most would just use the in-game menus for everything else).

I'm actually quite unimpressed with the graphics in Battlefield 3 on Xbox 360. You can REALLY tell it was built for a much more powerful platform and scaled back. The screen resolution is a little too low, pop-in is very near, and there's a lot of bland textures.\

In favor of BF3 on 360 though, they did get the framerate nice and smooth through all the graphical downgrading. I haven't had any real FPS drops, even in hectic situations, and above all that is most important when it comes to gameplay.
