Pay what you want for Championship Manager 2010 photo

Yes, it is just like Radiohead, isn't it?

Eidos is introducing a consumer-friendly pay scheme for Championship Manager 2010, offering players the chance to buy the game for as little as one English pence, plus the obligatory £2.50 transaction fee. You can pay more than 1p if you want, choosing your own price to reflect how much the game is worth.

"This is the first time an initiative like this has ever been tried in the videogames market," says general manager Roy Meredith. "This is the best Championship Manager the studio has ever made and we want as many people as possible to try the full new game as once they try it we’re convinced they will come back again and again."

This is going to be very, very interesting. I can see how this works in the music industury, where a number of bands have very loyal fanbases who want to give away money and support the acts. However, the games industry has very rarely been able to inspire a similar sense of loyalty. I can't wait to see how deep into the pockets gamers will actually dig for this.

I'd normally agree with you on this Jim, but the fact is that CM has one of the most loyal fanbases in videogaming, while simultaniously having a huge amount of piracy. I really if they can make some money off of this, and to be honest I wouldn't be surprised if they did.

Let's face it, your average Joe soap Scunthorpe fan is going to go and buy it at the store anyway.

Championship Manager games sucks, all the good staff members went few years ago to make Football Manager. Its better game. This is not worth 1 pound.

I wonder how this is going to work. seems like a bizarre way to market a game.

It sounds like a great idea to me. Get people hooked on the brand, sell the database updates at £5/year and suddenly a waning series has a profitable fan base. Let's see if it works.

@superhobo - Wrong - CM doesn't have a huge fan base, Football Manager does

@Seven Bells - The good staff didn't leave - they just lost the name. Sports interactive used to make the good Champ man and then Edios bought the name and a complelety different company made Shite Champ man.

The majority of the loyal fan base left CM behind and started playing with Sports Interactive Football Manager.

I played the demo and it was kinda bad, i actually prefer the previous instalment and the last football manager too. probably isn't worth more than a fiver in it's current state. Though for £2.51 I can't really say no.

This isn't going to end well. Pretty much the entire Championship Manager fanbase migrated to Football Manager when Sports Interactive went from Eidos to Sega. I'd be surprised if the prices being paid went above £2.51.
