Pay money to learn how to play Street Fighter photo

If you've got a skill, you might as well try and profit from it. That's a mentality embraced by a number of Street Fighter experts, who are offering intimate knowledge of Capcom's fighting game in exchange for cold, hard cash.

Players such as Jason Wong, Mike Ross, Martin Phan and Ryan Gutierrez are offering paid lessons in the art of digital combat, but don't expect their skills to come cheap. Gutierrez's price is $40 an hour, while Wong will demand a princely rate of $50.

Nobody needs help with fighting games more than I do, but paying money to get better? That, I'm not too sure about. Any of our own readers feel their skills would benefit from some paid tutelage?

With all the forums all online videos and tutorials and such, I'd think that people would do just fine improving on their own. Especially with companies like Aksys going the extra mile and shipping an extra tutorial disk with Blazblue.

More power to them. I can't wait until you're able to get you doctorate in fighting games.

I don't care how bad I am at any game as long as im enjoying it, paying to get better just seems pointless, if the game isn't any fun playing while im sucking at it then I would say its not worth playing at all, but from a business side of things nice idea.

There really aren't any massive secrets that these guys have that you can't learn through watching streams/youtube videos for free. Most of the problems people have with fighting games can easily be fixed with repitition and going into training mode until they nail down the timing for the combos for their chosen character. Also, going online and just playing a variety of players will familiarize you with the tricks and tactics of each character. Though it'd be nice to hear a little tip here or there from these guys, I can just learn from watching their previous matches

His name is Justin Wong, and though these are all players who dominate in tournaments 40-50 dollars for lessons seems a tad ridiculous. There are plenty of sites such as eventhubs and shoryuken.com that provide strategies and beginner to intermediate tactics for free.

You would think that something like this is pointless and a waste of money. For most people it is, but there are some where this is invaluable. The difference between doing this and trying to do it yourself is the same as anything else. Having someone who is an expert and can quickly gauge your ability can save you a lot of time in learning your weak areas. You can examine these things by yourself by watching your own replays but you might not catch on as fast. Really, you can just think of it as playing a money match you can't win. These guys have probably had their fair share of $50-100 or more matches. This isn't much different for them.

@JAquino I thought Justin had a cousin named Jason. I know he definitely has a cousin who is in the scene, but I don't remember his name for certain.

Anyway, I don't think there's anything wrong with a personal one-on-one "classroom" like this. Yeah you could learn for free by browing YouTube and message boards. But some people might prefer to have an actual teacher, and be willing to pay for it. So if it works, more power to everyone involved.

My mind went straight to Justin Wong too, but I realize he's likely not the only J. Wong in the world.

Anyway, while I'm sure doing something like this could improve my skills, I don't think it's worth the price of, say SSF4. Hell, I'd rather put that 40-50 bucks towards a fightstick or one of them Saturn-esque fightpads.

I don't think they necessarily SHOULDN'T be doing this, but I don't see it taking off.

There are plenty of resources out there for learning to play guitar, and yet some people choose to pay for lessons. This is the exact same thing.

Interesting. Paying to learn SF back in the day meant going to the arcade, but even if you lost every single match you'd be paying about...20+ bucks an hour (50c a match, 60 seconds a round).
Then again you weren't guaranteed playing against people like justin wong. Youtube videos and faqs are good but comp like that is a definite advantage. I wouldn't be surprised if some ppl actually did pay for this.

Considering the level of profitability that competitive gaming has reached, this doesn't come as a surprise. For anyone that wants to pursue a career (you can call it that now since people actually make a living playing games) in games, it's not unreasonable.

Lol@ people thinking these guys "are making real money". They can't even pay rent, and all 4 of these losers lives with parents or crashes on a couch (probably why you can only get a lesson on line!).

People pay that and more for personal trainers/coaches. I don't see how this is any different. Personally, I'm not trying to be the best at either athletics or fighting games, and this holds little value for me. I can definitely see how someone who does want to take his game to the next level would find value in personal coaching.

You know, I like to think the Destructoid community doesn't have its head up its ass but after reading some of these comments some of you should really shut the fuck up.

You know that feeling you get when someone who knows nothing about your hobby absolutely shits on it and talks as if they do? Thats the one I'm feeling right now. If you've never dabbled in competitive gaming and you don't like it or will never give it a shot, then keep your comments to yourself, some of us love it, and some of us are proud of what we've done and to sit here and read arrogance in text form about how we need to stop being happy and get "real jobs" make me sick.

Also, on top of that if you think time is all it takes to be good at any competitive game then I would love to see you pour hours into a game and come out on top, theres a lot more to competitive gaming then just sitting at a computer/console and sinking hours into it. Until you actually compete on the big stage you won't ever understand. Please, stop talking so boastfully about something you know nothing about.

The thing I worry about is - do these guys actually know how to teach?

Sure, they know how to play the game, but that doesn't mean they know how to transfer knowledge to others. I've had many a professor who got their job simply because of how accomplished they were in their field, yet many of the most accomplished couldn't teach for shit.

I'm with Dare365 on this one. a few of you are acting like retards. You clearly have no clue what you are talking about, but you continue to post. I dont get it, unless its just for the lulz or whatever you children do it for nowadays.

Also, why is Jim doing this story? Has he ever done a fighting game related story before ever? I mean, he can't even get the names of the pro players right. Leave this shit to Holmes. At least he has some clue about whats going on.

I happened to see a re-tweet of when J Wong and Marn first posted the fees. They started off at 35 per hour. Guess they had enough takers to up the price. Not for me, I'll continue to take my beatings on XBL and watch videos. But hey, if you've got the coin and the patience, why not?

Because it's apparently cool to hate on competitive gaming. Just look at all the cool kids acting like there's something wrong with this aside from the price maybe being a bit too high. Hell, people pay for guitar lessons, why not SSF4 or any game for that matter? But hey, what am I thinking logically for? This is the comments section.

"I can be like all the pro gamers if I play as much as them" Sorry freind but NO MATTER how much you pay to learn, if you suck at something, you suck. Those guys have talent and thats something you can't pay for. Ok, they can train you in their arts but they'll never teach you everything.

I suck in 2D Mario Games and I still have fun playing , I wont pay to learn how to play them. Also, no matter how much you pay to them for teaching you, In a EVO they'll KICK YOUR ASS!!!

Well, I'm not too keen on the idea of paying to learn a videogame, but people pay to learn how to bowl, play piano, dance and all other sorts of physical hobbies that aren't immediately natural from pros and talented amateurs. Hell, people get coaching oh how to run better and we've been running for the whole of time.
