If you've
got a skill, you might as well try and profit from it. That's a mentality embraced by a number of Street Fighter experts, who are offering intimate knowledge of Capcom's fighting game in exchange for cold, hard cash.
Players such as Jason Wong, Mike Ross, Martin Phan and Ryan Gutierrez are offering paid lessons in the art of digital combat, but don't expect their skills to come cheap. Gutierrez's price is $40 an hour, while Wong will demand a princely rate of $50.
Nobody needs help with fighting games more than I do, but paying money to get better? That, I'm not too sure about. Any of our own readers feel their skills would benefit from some paid tutelage?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Anyway, I don't think there's anything wrong with a personal one-on-one "classroom" like this. Yeah you could learn for free by browing YouTube and message boards. But some people might prefer to have an actual teacher, and be willing to pay for it. So if it works, more power to everyone involved.
Anyway, while I'm sure doing something like this could improve my skills, I don't think it's worth the price of, say SSF4. Hell, I'd rather put that 40-50 bucks towards a fightstick or one of them Saturn-esque fightpads.
I don't think they necessarily SHOULDN'T be doing this, but I don't see it taking off.
Then again you weren't guaranteed playing against people like justin wong. Youtube videos and faqs are good but comp like that is a definite advantage. I wouldn't be surprised if some ppl actually did pay for this.
Actually, given the amount of money and, in some cases, sponsorship, that these guys get... They really don't.
Lol@ people thinking these guys "are making real money". They can't even pay rent, and all 4 of these losers lives with parents or crashes on a couch (probably why you can only get a lesson on line!).
What? 99% of the people on shoryuken.com won't entertain any noobs questions. Unless you know how many frames it takes to link a lp,shoryu->fadc->super they wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire.
Top players can pull well into six figures annually. Judging by your grammar and generally juvenile approach, I would say the people you are mocking make quite a bit more than you do.
Probably because you post like a whiny child, much like how you posted here.
And hey, Destructoid discount: mention this post and I'll cut your rate down to $30/hr!
You know that feeling you get when someone who knows nothing about your hobby absolutely shits on it and talks as if they do? Thats the one I'm feeling right now. If you've never dabbled in competitive gaming and you don't like it or will never give it a shot, then keep your comments to yourself, some of us love it, and some of us are proud of what we've done and to sit here and read arrogance in text form about how we need to stop being happy and get "real jobs" make me sick.
Also, on top of that if you think time is all it takes to be good at any competitive game then I would love to see you pour hours into a game and come out on top, theres a lot more to competitive gaming then just sitting at a computer/console and sinking hours into it. Until you actually compete on the big stage you won't ever understand. Please, stop talking so boastfully about something you know nothing about.
Nice aggro there bro, just want to say something to you. I'm sure you will understand it because you're such a big scary Internet tough guy.
U mad?
Sure, they know how to play the game, but that doesn't mean they know how to transfer knowledge to others. I've had many a professor who got their job simply because of how accomplished they were in their field, yet many of the most accomplished couldn't teach for shit.
I think the professor bit you mentioned (which is 100% true, to everyone who's wondering) is exactly what they're counting on.
Also, why is Jim doing this story? Has he ever done a fighting game related story before ever? I mean, he can't even get the names of the pro players right. Leave this shit to Holmes. At least he has some clue about whats going on.
You're better off learning yourself. Obviously.
Because it's apparently cool to hate on competitive gaming. Just look at all the cool kids acting like there's something wrong with this aside from the price maybe being a bit too high. Hell, people pay for guitar lessons, why not SSF4 or any game for that matter? But hey, what am I thinking logically for? This is the comments section.
I suck in 2D Mario Games and I still have fun playing , I wont pay to learn how to play them. Also, no matter how much you pay to them for teaching you, In a EVO they'll KICK YOUR ASS!!!
I have three cigarettes and a Denny's coupon good for a free grand slam breakfast. Is that good enough? My apartment needs some new style.
