Pay money to get pummeled in Quake Live photo

According to CVG, in the upcoming issue of PC Zone magazine John Carmack toss around the idea of a “premium” service for Quake Live. The browser-based recreation of Quake III Gold is initially going to debut as a purely ad supported game. Of course, the pricing structure could completely change due to the reception of the game.

In the beginning Quake Live will be completely ad-supported, it's not out of the question that eventually we'll have some kind of a premium service. But we don't know what it's going to be yet, and we're certainly going out with the completely free-to-play model. As the community grows and we start seeing what people actually want to get out of it we may offer some other things there.
I have a feeling that the community will probably desire the game to stay free and as closeted as possible. Reports from beta testers that don’t breathe Quake indicate that the hardcore fanbase that the game has catered to over the years is making its presence felt in a substantial way. Apparently, it’s near impossible to get a string of kills in Quake Live without drinking 20 Red Bulls and smearing cookie crumbs all over the front of your shirt. It's unfortunate, but hopefully when the service opens up all of us "newbz" will be able to prey on each other. At least, as long the game is free.

Be nice if they actually released it already though. Been waiting to play this online since the Dreamcast.

Why?

I got quake 3 installed right now and there is tons of servers with people in it?

Who wants to play it in browser?

I played it at quake con and everboy went back to the quake 3 that is already sitting there and has tons of mods.

Why would they have to charge for it? It's not like it cost them much money to make. I'd imagine the maintenance to keep it online would cost them something, but not something ads can't handle.

I'm sure Quake 3 can be purchased really cheap, and like Cube said, there's mods out there. That seems much more appealing than having to pay for a browser game.

Also, fuck twitch shooters.

:P

If they make us pay, then I'm out. I'm barely in to begin with. And I'm definitely out, if this turns into a bunch of no-life Quake psychos slaughtering any newcomer who dares enter. Bye-bye fun.

The downside'll be that you can't have custom skins and suchlike.
The upside? It's free, you can play it wherever you get internet access (no install needed?) on all but the most ancient machines, and there'll be n00bs galore to up your score!

I still have my old PC version somewhere, and I signed up for the beta. Got nothing through yet :(

Why is there alway such a backlash against competitive gamers/games?

God forbid a game be difficult enough for only some people to have mastered/be decent at. I thought openness to games being played as more than merely a dumb game was part of what Destructoid was all about.

architecture: If people want to practice for 6 hours a day to play Quake at some masterful 'higher level' that's totally fine with me. What I don't want is for that to ruin my game experience totally because I maybe only want to play a little here and there.

Long story short, there should be some kind of ranking/rating used to match people up if they so wish. The hardcore Quake players can happily frag each other while more casual players can happily frag each other. Running aound like a smug twat with 5x the number of kills the rest of the server has might be fun for that one person, but it ruins things for others.

I installed Quake 3 last week to see what it's like nowdays. I'm telling ya, it's like trying to join in on Counterstrike or StarCraft 2 now days. The only people who play it know every spawn point, every bullshit tactic, I played for an hour and deleted it.

Wait what?
its already free to play online... I'm confused...
Oh you mean the GAME itself wasn't free initially right?
well if I hadn't weaned myself off this horrifyingly addictive game a while back I might care more about this.

Timmeh: Well isn't that sort of the division between casual FPSes like CoD, BF and competitive FPS like Q3 and CS? In the former, you can basically hop in knowing that the skill level and skill cap will be low.

By all accounts, QL will have a matchmaking system. You basically imply that it's not the best solution ("if they so wish"), but is there any other way to get what you want? I mean otherwise you might as well ask for everyone to suck at the game.

There's also a difference between the asshat that comes into bash newbs (single person with 5x) and the rest of the community. I think if you check out the Q3 and warsow communities, you will find that they are pretty helpful (especially since it's a dying genre) and that outside of helping new players, they typically choose to play people of their own skill level.

One point is that it's important to make the distinction between noob bashers and the competitive community. The other point is when someone is not good at a game/frustrated at it, their first reaction would be to label the game as bad, "twitch, brainless" and the people that play it as "psychos, no-lifes". Isn't that pretty childish?

Maybe you just aren't that good at it. Maybe the game isn't that fun if you aren't good at it. Besides most difficult games are hardly appealing if you aren't good (for example, many board games like chess and go).

Read the comments by Slashered..

"Precision mice and other equipment, along with a highly increased skill curve over the past decade, have made hitscan guns (those that hit you instantly) too overpowered."

"There will be more stats and numbers then ever before. Carmack joked and said that they have enough info to be able to find out 'how many times you died with the flag within a 20 ft in-game radius of the quad'. Wins/losses, frags/deaths, accuracies, captures, defense career stats will be amazing, on top of all the new stat categories we could come up with. Batting averages and RBI stats come to Quake."

There's going to be skill based match making. No reason to get all huffy.

Now if you had to pay for matchmaking..

architecture: I was responding in general to your post rather than about Quake Live specifically, I assumed you were responding to Sharpless' comment that you should be able to play the thing at a casual level without some hardcore Q3 fan coming in and ruining shit for people.

To be honest I've not looked at info about the game much because I've never had any interest in Quake MP, my PC has been my primary gaming source for 15 years and I've played Quake in any iteration online maybe a handful of times. If it does have matchmaking and it actually works unlike some games then good on 'em.

Just a spot of misunderstanding there I think :)

What the hell? Yeah, if I'm gonna have to pay for it, I'll buy Quake 3 somewhere for cheap. And don't dumb quake down, if you suck at it, it just makes you become better faster. It's not a casual game like UT.

@ vexed alex, Sharpless, bleep, Professor Pew:
Guys calm down the game will be free to play and ad supported. What they are talking about is in the future if some gamers don't want the ads id software may provide the option for them to pay and not have any ads.

Also the game will have a system that matches you with people of the same skill level as you.

1) There are all kinds of plans to have matchmaking in Quake Live, one look at the beta forums tells me that.

2) Another look at the beta forums and I noticed something else: Many, MANY threads made by competitive players including discussion on how to make Quake more accessible, beyond matchmaking, etc.

3) I'm 90% sure that the "premium service" talked about in that interview was just someone who didn't know how to say "pay for DLC", which, in all likelyhood, won't effect gameplay in any way.

Amp: It's not DLC. Read my previous comment. Carmack mentioned it during his QuakeCon keynote.

Wow... I know I'm late to the party, but I have to say a few things about this one.

First:
<i>it’s near impossible to get a string of kills in Quake Live without drinking 20 Red Bulls and smearing cookie crumbs all over the front of your shirt</i>
Let's not stereotype gamers that play more than you since you're being stereotyped by non-gamers already. Seems hypocritical to complain about the ignorance of news outlets while you belittle someone that plays quake "pro style".

Second:
Why is there so much angst toward something hard. People complaining about not being able to enjoy q3 due to the large skill gap should just group themselves together with the ones that think it's cool to complain about gh3 having extra notes. If it's too hard for you, avoid it, but you'll be missing out on one of the greatest competition games ever.

Third:
It's free. It doesn't "run in your browser". Who cares what they change some time down the road, it's a new model and I'm sure it'll have it's share of tweaks.

In short, I can't fucking wait to jump in and see the stats and rankings and matchmaking for one of the greatest games!

@ToeKing

lol and I'm even later in leaving the party, completely agree on all points except

" It doesn't "run in your browser". "

Which is not exactly a matter of agreement or disagreement. It DOES run in your browser.
ToeKing's Avatar

@Amp

I could be wrong on that point, but I thought I read in multiple places that the browser just serves as a launcher and a frontend for the matchmaking, server finding, friend's list, and statistics. I'm not in the beta, though, so I've just gone on what I can piece together across multiple articles and any of my friends will tell you I don't read everything that's written some times. :p
