It's hard to travel for only Friday and Sunday passes so stupidly I held off - but saw that the scalpers are already hard at work making huge profits from 3 day passes and I simply won't pay those kind of markups!
I made it to PAX the past two years... but I guess this year I'm not going. :(
Ah well... I suspect I'll need surgery this year again anyway, so even if I did get tickets I might not have been able to go. :(
I had no intentions of going to PAX Prime anyway. My utter hatred for scalpers is simply based on principle.
With that said, I feel like there was far more advance warning than any of the (last 4) years I've been to. First the week after PAX East they said the passes would be on sale by the end of the month, then they go on sale last week and the vendor crashes, so they announce that this week and they sell out in a couple of hours. I think the crash of last week made a lot of the people who knew become more paranoid and ready to get them, while it also most likely made a big $ sign to scalpers.
O
Alternatively, they could limit the number of passes purchases to 4 passes per credit card/payment method.
They should do something to try to prevent this anyway...
:(
They've got the amount of passes you can buy capped at 5 per person, though, i know Khoo tweeted that the average number of tickets sold was 1.74 per transaction, so they think that the vast majority of them are legit and not to be scalped.
Guess I know how to make some quick money when tickets go on sale for next PAX.
Print your damn real name on the badge and force to show ID. Scalper problem solved.
^ This would solve a lot of problem, but there is still the problem in people getting rid of their badges they no longer need. The price increase should help with that and with the needing a badge under your name should make sure people get badges that they know they will use.
Which is obviously why ticket prices have been so low for so long. You do realize that they don't actually make any extra money when someone scalps tickets, right?
Either way, I don't think scalpers were a big problem. Looking on Ebay, I'm seeing only 38 results atm for badges. Even assuming they're all selling least five, that's only 190 so far, which isn't terribly conducive to mass scalping.
I remembered that last year PAX Prime passes went on sale in April- a couple weeks after PAX East. So I wen to the PAX website and kept it on my browser and started checking it the first week in April. Around the time they went on sale last year, they put out an announcement that the link to registration was not active yet, but would be towards the end of the month. So I kept checking twice a day- just to be safe.
When they went on sale the first time, I clicked on the link... only to find it not working. I went to the PAX forums to see what had happened. The influx of people had crashed the server. But one person had the direct link to the site and gave it out. I quickly went too it and after two tries, got my 3 day. Soon afterwards it crashed completely. I was worried since I hadn't gotten my confirmation email, but I had been charged and I got the printout confirmation, so I was not too worried. A few days later I got the email.
The only thing that sucks is I forgot to get my BYOC pass, and when passes went back up, they sold out immediately.
I am not posting this to brag, but rather to say that I put a little extra effort into securing my pass, and was rewarded for my diligence...
