It's Prime time for some Dead Island time. Or at least it was for me upon visiting the Deep Silver booth this weekend at PAX 2012! I got a chance to sit down for an extended sneak peek of Dead Island Riptide, helmed by producer Sebastian Reichart, to get acquainted for what's in store for fans in 2013.
Riptide picks up right where Dead Island left off; the survivor's dramatic escape via military ship is instantly thwarted by a monsoon, leaving them to wash ashore somewhere near Banoi to fight the zombie invasion anew. Fans of the first will find the combat and aesthetic largely unchanged, with a few key intriguing new features. Original characters played in the first game will "carry over" to Riptide; you can continue your progress with whomever you invested time into initially in the series.
One new character with a unique skill set will also be introduced. There's going to be interesting new vehicle-based combat, adding the ability to shoot backwards from boats and jeeps while another survivor mans the wheel. Deep Silver says there are also some new chat features that should improve the experience; I'm guessing voice and text chat, which were previously unsupported.
The menu doesn't appear to have changed, which is disappointing. I didn't get to see the weapon selection process or how the map is used but I can only hope they're speedier and more functional. There is the promise of an expanded selection of zombie mutations, weapons and mods, as well as environment-based defenses for use in wave attacks.
Reichart also promises that the gunplay has been more greatly emphasized, which should excite my fellow Purna fans in particular. I never really felt finished with my Purna file, so I'm looking forward to continuing on with her character. Hell, I'm just excited for more Dead Island in general.
