Watching the first 20 minutes of Mass Effect played by a cute BioWare representative, I couldn't help but be reminded of a ventriloquist I saw on America's Got Talent a few nights ago. Why I happened to be watching America's Got Talent is none of your business, but let it be known that I wasn't happy about it.

Now, the thing about Mass Effect is that it seemed, more or less, like a ventriloquist's dummy. Of course, it was a very nice-modeled, well-rendered dummy with nice textures, but nothing more. The game, much like Pinocchio, lacks life.

The gameplay looks like your standard FPS fare, which is to say that I didn't see anything great or remarkable. There's a variety of weapons and abilities to use, but my pants didn't get wet or tight because of them. Gameplay is kind of hard to judge without an actual controller in your hands, so I'm going to reserve judgment on that.

Where the presentation really fell short, however, is in the emotionless voice acting and subpar facial animations. Not only did the conversation lack the natural ebb and flow to which we were all looking forward, but it was as if the voice actor's took commas, question marks, and exclamations points out of their repertoire. The dialogue has about as much emotional engagement as a grocery list. Even worse, the facial animations match the shoddy voice acting: the mouths move, and that's about it. It'd be great for a Joan Rivers botox sim, but it doesn't really make for a compelling video game.

At worst, Mass Effect is disappointing. The best reaction I've heard all day was this: "It wasn't that bad, just more of the same." If "not that bad" is all you've got going for you ...

Ho hum.

This always looked like one of those games that wants to be a movie, kinda like MGS4. What's up with that current trend anyway. Are people so easily fooled by flash that they don't even realize that they are judging games by stuff that has nothing to do with actually playing them?

Judging by that recent 1up.com preview, I'd say that you're wrong at best. The conversation system looks really cool and so does the gameplay. It did not look like a standard fps to me as much as a mix between mgs and kotor. All the gameplay I'VE seen is from a third person perspective.

See, the great thing about reading Dtoid for so long is that I know which writers I have similar tastes with and which writers I have never agreed with.

In this case I don't remember ever reading a word of Orcist's that I've agreed with. Fellow Dtoid groupies be calm, this is no slam, this is like knowing which movie reviewers you like to read because they have the same tastes as you.

That all being said, I've read impressions from other people who had either hands on time with the game or watched others play and they've all been mostly positive.

When it comes down to it, I never expected anything out of Mass Effect other than a great deep story and great visuals (this is an RPG after all folks, even if the combat sections are 3rd person shooter). From what I've heard that still seems to be what we'll be getting and I still foresee me picking this game up.

I will however be waiting for a few reviews to pop up before purchasing though.

I was a little surprised by your opinion as i just read a couple of other article's praising mass effect but that is nothing new really. It is good to get an honest opinion and after going back and watching some video's myself i can totally see where you are coming from.

While that part of the game is a big part i am more interested in the story element's. I am also a huge bioware fanboy(even been to their studio)and i have total confidence in their story telling BG1 & 2 kotor some of my favourite game's of all time. The combat does kinda look meh but i do liek teh idea you dont have to play it like a standard FPS you can pause anytime and plan your move's for all character's ahead of time and while the execution of the voice acting and facial expression's are lacking i have no doubt that dialog will be engaging and their will be alot of it. Just my two cent's

I'm surprised by this in a way, after hearing so much hype for it. But at the same time, I'm sort of relieved because I own a PS3 (though I want to get a 360 in time too), and I have a few friends who are 360 fanboys (keep in mind I'm not a Sony fanboy, I just was was won over by a bunch of games being developed for it) who continuously stroke their cocks as they tell me how the PS3 sucks because it's not getting Mass Effect.

Maybe this will shut them up.

This si the perfect game to see where people want graphics to go. This game really is all about graphics, and the fact that BioWare made it.

If everything about this game were the same except it was made by Taito and had cel shaded graphics, would those of you currently excited for it even care?

I trust Orcist's opinion on this one, because he seems to have very similar tastes as myself. He's stated before that he too feels emotionally disconnected from current gen's "Uncanny Valley" games like Mass Effect. I'm betting he was hoping that the voice acting, dialouge, and facial animation would go over the top to compensate for the character model's being in the valley.

Jim and Heavenly Sword has shown us how much quality voice acting, dialouge, and facial animation can do to make lifeless character models feel like real actors.

I'm guessing that's what Orcist was hoping to see in Mass Effect, but didn't.

I signed up because this article(?) annoyed me so much. The title suggested that the person writing it had actually played the game (Mass Effect IS disappointing). Watching the first 20 minutes of a RPG and saying the game is disappointing is the equivalent to watching a movie trailer and writing a movie review. Not only didn't he play it, but he thinks it's a FPS!
I've been noticing something on Epileptic Gamer (which mentions Dtoid often). And that's that guys who own PS3s gravitate toward any negative they can find on a 360 game. I don't know which systems this Orcist has, but I'm detecting a bias here - like the Jim Sterling comments above. I don't even own a next gen system yet, but it's getting harder and harder to find to find quality opinions on the internet.

Punk0 and the rest, what does it tell you about the game that the writer of this article could mistake what kind of game Mass Effect is after watching gameplay for 20 minutes?

What it should tell you is this game clearly isn't about gameplay, it's about something else. You can't watch a video of Katamari Damacy, Super Mario Galaxy, or Halo 3 for 20 minutes and mis-read what kind of gameplay those games have.

And what is a "quality opinion" exactly? Orcist states" "It's kinda hard to judge gameplay with out a controller in your hands". He's not coming out and saying the game sucks for sure. He's just reporting what he saw from his perspective. That's as "quality" of an opinion as you can ask for, no?

See, it's not the post itself, but the ensuing shitstorms like this that invariably follow in the comments that have caused me to not feel it worthwhile to post to Destructoid anymore. It seems like almost every goddamn post these days generates such a shitstorm.

Chris Taran said it best:

See, the great thing about reading Dtoid for so long is that I know which writers I have similar tastes with and which writers I have never agreed with.

In this case I don't remember ever reading a word of Orcist's that I've agreed with. Fellow Dtoid groupies be calm, this is no slam, this is like knowing which movie reviewers you like to read because they have the same tastes as you.

As for myself, I just read the article, rolled my eyes, and simply decided to wait and see for myself, rather than trust the word of someone who merely watched someone else play a pre-release build (by two months, at least) for twenty minutes before writing the game off as a failure. If this game is only half as good as I found Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, Icewind Dale, KoTOR or Jade Empire to be, it will still be truly epic. On the other hand, if it's as bug-filled and nigh-unplayable as Neverwinter Nights was, I will be sad.

And... dammit, I just posted to Destructoid again, which is something I told myself I wouldn't be doing again any time soon precisely because of these shitstorms that flare up on such a regular basis these days. Fuck me with a spoon. *sighs wearily and goes back to lurking*

I appreciate Orcist's opinion, first and foremost. Its honest, and he doesn't come out and say that the game sucks.... its just that based on what he saw, without having a chance to experience the gameplay, he wasn't that impressed with it. Fair enough. There probably isn't a single thing Heavenly Sword can do to impress me enough to want to play it, and from what I've seen, I have no reason to revise that. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

That being said, I do expect that someone from Bioware is probably reading this very, very carefully. The doctors over at Bioware seemed to me to be people that care about making good games, and their track record has been very impressive. Given that, I have the game reserved and paid off.... I am looking forward to this very much. Unless there is a truly disastrous showing..... I'm probably still going to pick it up.

MS has a huge facility to test these games (if anyone has the chance to read the article about the huge facility they have where they're QA'ing Halo 3, I expect that this is getting somewhere close to that level of support). Mass Effect really is a critical title for the 360, and for me personally, it rivals FFXIII (they're about equal, in my view).

Just my two cents.

So theres weak voice acting, and the facial animations are rather lifeless.
Hm...
I've really enjoyed games before inspite of the voice acting, and as long as the facial animations are better than Jade Empire/KOTOR then I don't see much of a problem.
It's not a conversation simulator no matter how much that particular element of the game has been touted.

This preview fails on so many levels that its insane so many people here are buying it. First of we have all seen gameplay videos of this game right? They are all around the internet. Last time i checked the dialog system is the best i have ever seen in a video game, but plz make your on conclusion, but based on the videos and not this article. First of the game doesent even have a first person view so how the fuck can it be "your standard fps"?. Second the negativity i get from this text is so over the top when thinking that this guy only "claims" to have been watching when somebody else is playing the game. I am fairly certain that the person who wrote this text has his own agenda or something else childish motivating him to write this. I mean this whole thing is based on 20 minutes of gameplay same as judging a game based on its demo, but on top of that the person who wrote this wasnt even the one playing!!!

It's not a preview. Just some impressions of one guy, jesus. Anyone that loved KOTOR will love this anyway. So what if you can analyze the text and notice that he hasn't been following all sniplets of Mass Effect like some of us have? I thought it was disappointing to hear the negative stuff since I'm pretty much a BioWare fanboy, but then again it's refreshing to see what other people may think about it. Or would you all rather have all your news outlets always agree with you?

All orcist is saying is the dialog seems awkward and it does with the extra lip-flap when the characters are talking. Another problem I saw is the voice acting seems better in the cut scenes we've seen but sound monotone when you're actually in a conversation with random ncp's. I'm not saying the is a game breaking element but since dialog is a big element in bioware games it could be distracting and annoying in a forty hour game.

Some of you need to calm down. While i do have faith in Bioware i don't have blind faith there is a chance they could stumble with one of their game's.In term's of what reviews the game will get we all know it will get more lee way than other title's simply because of the pedigree of the developer and at least destructoid does away with that.

On the other hand Orc's comment's were simply his opinion and as Tron stated(and wrote a wonderfull thought provoking article too)some people just dont like the hyper realism that some game's are going for. While i did not totally agree with tron( i like the direction GT4 is taking in term's of graphic's) I respect his and orc's opinion. So again it is all conjecture all opinion and these personol attack's on the author's character need to stop!! Fanboy's sheesh!!

A couple things:

I'm not sure about this, but I think it's actually a third person game, so far as I've seen on every gameplay video released on it (I think there were 2 or 3 vids)

I have seen dialogue in these videos as well and it looks nothing like what you describe. I think perhaps this 20 minutes was rushed to show off, and that is going to be the only mistake Bioware makes.
