I did everything there was to do at PAX. I visited various panels, walked the show floor, hung out with the community, witnessed a poor hobo get solicited for sex (no joke) and hit up a few parties. I did everything except pay attention to the Omegathon competition. The last thing I wanted to do was sit around and watch people play videogame.
So of course this came back to bite me on my ass when I found out yesterday that the final game played at Omegathon was Halo 3. Not only that, but they played on two brand new maps, showed off new weapons and even had the Minibosses play an amazing cover the Halo 3 theme before it all started.
Hit the jump to watch the second round of the final match of Omegathon, the awesome cover by the Minibosses and Gabe and Tycho playing a round of Halo 3.
The final round of the Omegathon was fought between Accelon and MNC Dover. After two matches on two maps never before shown to the general public -- as well as new weapons such as the Brute Hammer and Incendiary Bomb, Accelon emerged victorious. The lucky bastard won a trip to the Tokyo Game Show for two as well as five grand. Before the final round took place though, the Minibosses surprised the crowd by giving their rendition of the Halo 3 theme.
The quality is crap, but holy mother of god, that was an amazing cover. I came into the concerts expecting all the bands to sound like crap. I kept telling everyone that gaming bands sound great in the studio, but not live. The Minibosses (as well as the OneUps) made me eat my cynical words.
After all was said and done, Gabe and Tycho took to the stage and battled it out in a Halo 3 match with Gabe being victorious over Tycho.
[Editor's note: Yes, if in case any of you are wondering, I wrote this entire post with tears trickling down my face.]
Hamza Aziz, Destructoid's Community Director, has been here since day one. He was born when a tiger coughed up a hairball into a pool of ooze. He was one of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before budget cuts. Hamza works as a previews editor and manages a team in San Francisco. To date he has given away tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to readers. What a dick. Actually, Hamza is as kind as he is hairy.

madninja, dude, that's just trolling. We enjoy hearing about your, and others', dislike of Halo about as much as you lot enjoy hearing about Halo. You don't like it, just avoid the posts about it. You're not alone, but please just leave us alone and let us enjoy it. It's not hard.
But I'll tell you what IS hard - MY PENIS. Holy shit, the flamethrower looks amazing. Overpowered though, perhaps. That was a lot of fun to watch, and the commentary was amusing.
i have to say, that first match had me on edge of my seat from start to finish. the flamethrower: badass. the brute hammer(?): looks badass, though i could not tell really since i think everyone died when they had it out. only 1 month away... :)
Sorry guys, Sharpless has opened my eyes to the fact that i am addicted by that evil point system. I was just venting because I have a friend who talks nothing but Halo and I saw a Halo fan at Comic Con who mad me dislike the game even though I liked the first two. Sorry, please forgive me my fellow nerds.
Halo 2 didn't look at all like that right? This is the improved graphics that are actually shipping with Halo 3, yes?
If that's the case then I can say that I am honestly impressed. I was skeptical in the past due to the single pictures and the like, what the multiplayer demo looked like - I don't recall looking like That.
Now I wonder if the story will be any good. In any case, I am a bit motivated to complete Halo 2 *nod*. And that is a good thing and an honest truth. This video has actually made me slightly excited of all this.
P.S. When he siad "Oh Shit!" that did get me laughing ^_^
@madninja
I'm sorry for taking a swing at you, but I just get fed up with having to put up with those comments everytime there's a piece of Halo news on this site. Especially when it's a post by CTZ, one of the few (only?) Dtoid writers that truly loves and respects teh Haloes. It's just nice to read about something I enjoy without a constant chorus of "It sucks!" and "Who cares?" every single time. At the same time, you're welcome to not like the games. That doesn't bother me.
@qo_op
Um, you just said that you'd rather stick with Halo 2 instead of getting Halo 3? Are you the same guy who sold his 360 and bought a Wii?
Note to self...go home at lunch and change underwear cause you just spooged all over them!!!! The Haloz looked 10 times better than the Online Demo did...can't wait and also the commentary was pretty funny too, that guy rulez
Maybe I just said that because I just finished playing Bioshock and it was awesome. Now you have made me interested in Halo 3 because now I don't look at it as the next evolution that everyone hyping it to be. Now I just see it as another FPS and it looks better that way. (you are probably never going to see this message)
That "Worst shoutcaster EVAR!!" was Tycho from Penny Arcade. And if you actually read the comic, you'd know that he was being humorous. And also, he's married with a kid.
Forge is the real exciting thing in Halo 3, and the 4 player co op. But I feel like a Halo nerd when I just got my Scarab hero click I got from Comic Con.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
But I'll tell you what IS hard - MY PENIS. Holy shit, the flamethrower looks amazing. Overpowered though, perhaps. That was a lot of fun to watch, and the commentary was amusing.
EXHILERATING!!
'Partial Hit!"
My college buddies are all total Halo geeks. They'll eat this up like crazy.
I really dig the design of some of the new weapons. That magnum? Awesomesauce.

I wish I could have him presiding over every match of Halo I play.

Yeah, I'm not really expecting anything earth-shaking from Halo 3. I just want smoother gameplay and some shiny new playthings.
