PAX 08: Tabletop Gallery photo

Okay, real quick-like, I'm going to explain that image. This guy told me last PAX that Kingsport Horror (an expansion for my current favorite board game, Arkham Horror) was going to be available by Halloween of 2007. Do not trust this man, as he made me very sad for many months.

PAX isn't just a videogame show, it's a celebration of geekdom. All manner of dork pursuits can be found within its hallowed halls, including one of my favorite pasttimes: tabletop gaming.

This year, the show had grown so swollen with content that these original wireless gaming systems had to be moved to their own building across the street from the main convention center. There, tournaments were held in all manner of games and an entire floor was dedicated solely to just grabbing a table and playing whatever you wanted. If you didn't have your gear with you, a huge library of games was also available for borrowing. There was even a touching tribute to Gary Gygax in which people were asked to leave a note recounting their favorite memories playing Dungeons & Dragons.

The exhibition hall, too, featured many publishers of analog entertainment with lots of opportunities for hands-on demos of new games. Big names like Seattle-based Wizards of the Coast and Fantasy Flight Games were alongside more indie producers like Flying Frog Productions (makers of the very cool Last Night on Earth zombie game).

Check out our epic gallery of tabletop goodness from this year's show.

Kingsport Horror is out and is so cool! We've waited a long time for this (I work in a LFGS store) but it was worth the delays ;)

Those are some cool shots. I applaud all table top gaming efforts as their is always a level of dedication that is just astounding to me. People who sacrifice their time to put so much love and detail into something that is essentially still art, always impresses me.

Conrad, a thousand apologies for not getting to play Arkham Horror with you dude, I guess it's good that we were both really busy but I really wanted to play. I talked to your girl about maybe playing via VASSAL? Shoot me an email bud.

@teach4food: Yes, there was some interesting stuff there. I was particularly curious about a giant monster game called Monsterpocalypse and Fantasy Flight has a game (that wasn't at the show but I did discuss with a rep) called Red November where you're a bunch of gnomes trying to save yourselves from a myriad of problems in a submarine.

@Butmac: Is there a VASSAL module for Arkham Horror? I didn't see one listed on their site.

I am this dude, and at that time, we thought "Kingsport Horror" WAS going to be out around Halloween. Sorry. But it's out now, and then next expansion, "Black Goat of the Woods", will be out this fall.

That's a great picture, though, thanks!

@443: No hard feelings. I have my Kingsport Horror and it is fantastic. Really looking forward to Black Goat of the Woods. Keep up the good work.

This year was my PAX tabletop year, whereas last year was all about the classic console games. I played in a Duel of Ages tourney and took it home, and slogged through 3 bloody hours of Munchkin Quest. Pics available at www.PlayingWithMyWeiner.com

Having not yet been able to make it to PAX myself, I appreciate the massive amount of pictures. Tabletop gaming is something I can't wait to force upon my son. :P
