Huh, that's interesting. The Falmer had a pretty cool backstory, I'd love to see some of their ruins from before they were defeated by the Dwarves.

I'm thinking that sometime after the events of Morrowind, the Empire outlawed them for whatever reason and the knowledge of how to craft them has been dying over the last 200+ years. You have to track down some old school weapon craftsmen and recruit him a bunch of apprentices to re-teach the art of crossbows to.

Well some dwemor spheres are armed with crossbows. It wouldant take much imagination for you to come up with some reverse enginering that leads to crossbows being made... jesus christ i am such a nerd^^
Im just gonna come out and say it. Skyrim was too small... yeah it wasent in the begining but after playing it in that obsessive way that Skyrim makes you it will all seem quite small after a while.

Maybe one of the DLC packs/expansions sees the Dovakiihn use the Elder Scrolls at some point to peer into the past again, this time to see the Falmer empire at its height and to get a better look at those who caused them to fall in the first place, the Dwemer.
The sudden presence of crossbows could probably be explained as it having took a while for the smugglers to pass pieces of smuggled crossbows across the border from places unknown, perhaps via portals located right inside of their rectums? Their absence was probably just good old fashioned fantasy gun control analog.

That kind of relativism can be applied to anything you've explored the fuck out of. Everything seems much smaller than we first assumed it was after it's been under the scope of our perception for long enough. Though, I do agree that Skyrim wasn't as large as some of it's predecessors, and I hope that is remedied with ample DLC that allows us to gallivant around through out the rest of Tamriel.

I had a girl over yesterday. I had shown her Skyrim in the past--slaying dragons and then riding around on a horse while Lydia followed me on foot, carrying all the dragon bones. She didn't think that was half as funny as I did.
Anyway, yesterday she told me she read about how you can make people in Skyrim run around naked. She asked if I ever did that. Um, why yes, I had to admit.
The only thing that sucked was that, since I hadn't played for a couple months, it took around 15 minutes to boot the game, which kind of killed the novelty of the moment.
Still, since I have both male and female nude patches, my character went skinny dipping with Lydia on a sunny day outside Markarth, and a mirthful time was had by all.

I finally picked up Skyrim a couple of weeks ago. Combat is clunky as hell, but everything else is awesome.
I'm kind of excited for the Kinect controls and DLC. Guess it was a pretty good time to get started with the game.

I don't think we'll be playing as Falmer since they already appear in game as enemies and were pretty messed up by the Dwemer. Also, shame on anyone not using the UESP wiki

Though I wouldn't personally take this as an end-all confirmation of DLC, that's certainly a plausible theory.
