Patapon 2 US demo given for pre-orders only photo

As it did with Killzone 2, Sony Computer Entertainment America is once again restricting a US demo to pre-orders only, this time with Patapon 2. American PSP owners will need to reserve the game via GameStop or Amazon ... or of course just use the fake European PSN account that they made for the Killzone 2 demo. There's a free "Lordy Hat" in it for you, too.

Sony's insistence on this backwards form of demo distribution still puzzles me. Those unfamiliar with Patapon, or those like me who weren't too keen on the original but would like to see if the sequel is an improvement, cannot try the game. In my case, I certainly won't be buying it if I can't try out. The twisted thing is, this little scheme must logically be working for Sony, if it's doing it again.

Mind you, Sony and logic don't often go together in the same sentence.

Hang on. Is Patapon 2 supposed to be on the EU PSN already? I got the demo on Thursday and loved it so much i bought the full game (PSN again) at the Weekend...

Is this a bit of EU love?

Can't imagine why you didn't like the first one?! (sarcasm) it's odd, but when you get into it, it's brilliant. Who wouldn't love leading a tiny army of pons to war?! Using an addictive, fun rhythm game?!

So yeah, if you've got a PSP and an EU account i highly reccoment dropping by and getting the demo. You can even take your progress from the demo and continue when you get the full game!

Pon Pon Pata Pon mother fuckers!

This is a bullshit trend - a demo should be available to make the decision whether to buy, not a perk for buying it before the reviews come out.

Wait...you can only get the demo if you pre-order? Well fuck, if you don't like the demo, you're pretty much fucked. What next? Pre ordering demos to get preview images and trailers of the games?

It seems the concept of cancelling a pre-order is foreign.

This seems to be a solely US problem, I think it's down to the conditions of your retailers pre order deals. I wonder why it only seems to happen in the USA.

Seems pretty retarded to me.

Get the Demo from the EU store - you won't regret it. imagine Loco Roco but with a little army.

Why would someone want a demo if they are planning on getting the game? What about the people who never even heard of the game? Seems like everyone is being screwed.

Patapon came out in the EU earlier both times, and you can get both right now.

As for demos, this isn't limited to Sony alone. I believe it has to do with the pervasiveness of Gamestop and its current power as the main retail channel for all games purchases. Gamestop makes most of its money from used games, but that's immediately followed by preorder cash.

There's incredible pressure on ALL the publishers who intend to release to the US market to make nice with Gamestop, and Gamestop wants preorders.

Way to go! All we need to do now is find a way to get free PS3 / 360 games and the developers will never get any of our money!

Surely then they will make the best games when they're out of business!

Thank you so much for crippling the PSP software market - who needs new games?!

(if for some strange reason you can BUY "official" games from torrent sites i apologise but i would reasonably assume that you stole those games to play on a pirate-ed PSP)

It's £20 on the PSN FFS. How tight do you need t be?

typical Sony. Absolutely convinced brandname alone would sell their products, and marketing is for silly morons like Nintendo who are far inferior to sony, obviously.

The only reason this method "works well" is because the last games they tried this out was Killzone 2 and Resistance Retribution. Those two titles are already well-known of so it's asinine that Sony thinks this works. It alienated players for the LocoRoco 2 demo, especially since I had a lot of people coming into my store asking for it, only hating it after (yes, hating it) since they can't play it without reserve.

And are we sure everyone isn't getting their respective pair of reproductive doodads in a twist over nothing? We went through this with Killzone 2 and, hey, the day before launch the demo was available for everyone to try.

How is this not logical? By forcing a preview through certain retailers, Sony guarantees a level of marketing through those retailers - something the first Patapon sorely needed. A demo would only reach people who already know about the game, while the marketing could hit all who walk into the store or browse the site.

SexualChocolate: It's pointless to argue with people like that. They already have made up their mind and you won't convince them.

He could of meant he got the demos by torrenting them. Which is what I plan to do, why go through all that trouble of pre-ordering then not liking the demo and have to go back to the store to cancel the pre-order.

It's sort of a weird situation, because I agree that they are denying the demo from the people they should be trying to give it to, but at the same time, I think they should also be rewarding pre-orders with something. Otherwise, they're not going to get as many pre-orders.

Still, rewarding a pre-order with a demo and barring others from the demo is probably the dumbest thing they could do.

They really want people to pirate this game. Instead of trying to combat this by giving people great incentives they're encouraging it.

If you're getting the demo from torrent site - i apologise.

I personally DL all my music via Torrents, but game developers need our money to continue working, musicians don't get enough of our cash so I'd rather not pay the fat cat record companies.

When it comes to games, PSP especially has had massive piracy problems so it pisses me off to think people are still taking the piss out of it. It means I get no new releases to play simply because people are too tight to PAY FOR their games.

Like I say, jump on the EU PS store!!

I still can't put Patapon down, I actually played it last night instead of Killzone or HAWX. I'm playing so much Patapon 2 right now that i can hear the Patapon song everywhere I go!!! It's stuck in my head!!!

Pon Pon Pata Pon.
