What an awful man Wardrox is. Anyway, that grim time has rolled around once again, and this time we don't have pseudo-lesbianism or madcap defense attorneys to make us sound impressive. Yep, Podcastle 12 records tonight and we have no cheap gimmicks, just cheap presenters -- consisting of me, Wardrox and Atheistium. We will also be joined by the community guest who was going to be on the last episode but wasn't, Insomniac.
We have no overall theme for this episode, as we experiment with a slightly more random format. We have plenty of European news to discuss though:
PS3 outselling the 360 in Europe.
No incentive for developers to translate games from American to English!
No DualShocks for us! MGS 4's bundle is not very ultimate.
Newspapers actually being nice to GTA.

I watched a trailer and it actually looked like a decent game with some interesting ways with dealing with enemies.
This is my question: Which of you are going to PAX.
I'm intrigued by your statement about translating from "American" to "English". As an long-time Anglophile with a lot of BBC DVDs on my shelf I understand the differences between the two and I agree that we use our own language over here, but why is it such a concern?
I've always been highly critical of British shows over here that get "Americanized" as well as when British actors are required to lose their British accents when in American TV shows. It makes to sense to me at all. Keeping the accent and dialect accounts for part of the charm.
Why do you feel that video games need to be "translated" such as it is from American to English? To me it seems to be as absurd as giving Sherlock Holmes a Brooklyn accent.
That brings up a good point. How come you guys on that side of the pond speak "proper" English instead of good (aka: clear and understandable) English? You don't have to lose the accents, which I think are cool, just drop some of the ridiculous slang. ;)

I tried both and they're both fine. I prefer the 360 version though because of LIVE. When i rented the PS3 one it was choppy online if you didn't turn off pedestrians and traffic. I blame GameSpy.
What can Microsoft do to combat Sonys recent surge? More price cuts perhaps?
Are employees at videogame stores as pushy as they are in the US. DO they constantly try to get people to reserve games or beg them to trade in their old ones. Also do they have to make up lies such as "GTAIV is sooo big it takes over an hour to drive across Liberty City" to sell the strategy guides?

I don't understand that either. The games need to be made to handle both 4:3 and 16:9 TVs, but they use the same engine for both aspect ratios. Are these engines so inflexible that they can't handle PAL as well? If that's the case, these game companies need to look at how their engines work; otherwise, they're just making a ton of work for themselves and pissing off Europeans in the process.
What's the deal with MS not wanting to put Cave shmups on 360 Live, even though they recently had Ikaruga grace said service? I'm confused on this and I'm yet to understand why this is.

Serious question time: Do you think the recent good attitudes toward GTA4 from several news outlets is due more to the fact that they've wizened up an seen that it isn't the devil come to steal their children in the night, or more to the fact that the volume of gamers has grown such that they can no longer get away with baseless claims of games being the downfall of the modern world?
1) I demand to see a comparison video between Wardrox and Jim to see which one has more frames and is thus worthy of my undying devotion.
2) Do you think that some of this "acceptance" of GTA IV by the media may have something to do with its immense popularity and not people actually wisening up?
3) Do you find it hypocritical that game series like GTA and Manhunt draw so much heat for rampant murder while games like the Dynasty Warriors series don't? I mean, in DW you murder thousands of people a minute, but it isn't "realistic". How close to being "realistic" does a game have to be to get everyones panties in a bunch?

- What's the major difference between a game translated in American English and English English? Also, do the other parts of the U.K. raise a shitfit when games aren't translated into Scottish or Welsh?
- Is Europe really that much more open to a violent game like GTA IV than the media in America is? Do they do their homework for the most part instead of spreading lies that can easily be rebutted with the slightest bit of research? We've had people claim you run around chainsawing cops, that the game features the same characters from Grand Theft Auto III, that it forces you to do nothing but kill non-stop.
