For me, the multiplayer in GTA IV was an experiment that sounded neat on paper, but didn't work out in practice. Maybe that was because I own the game on PS3, so I only tried it once or twice since there weren't a lot of folks on my friends list who were always playing it. I'm hoping things will be different with the "free roam" multiplayer mode in Rockstar's next big open-world game, Red Dead Redemption, because holy hell, it looks like a lot of fun in this trailer.
Free roam allows you to form a posse with up to seven of your friends and traverse the entire game world, looking for things to do. Such things include, but are not limited to: fighting other posses (the maximum player count is 16, so you could have four four-player posses in a game); enforcing or flouting laws; and hunting animals. Is it bad that I'm thrilled by the idea of taking down a big buck while on horseback with some buddies? I mean, doesn't a testosterone-fueled, manhood-affirming hunt sound like fun to you? (There's also the added bonus of annoying the hell out of your friends by repeatedly saying "I'm on a horse" in chat.)
Of course, you don't have to bother with the posse stuff; you can just go off by yourself and do stuff. But that's not multiplayer, of course, so apparently, you'll run into other folks in the game world. From the trailer, it's unclear how that's going to work -- I mean, is this an MMO of sorts? I guess we'll have to wait to find out until May 18, when Red Dead Redemption comes out on PS3 and 360.

I hope this multiplayer is way more fun than GTA. Cuz GTA online sucked hard. I think it will be though, because this game looks all around better than the latest GTA.
This game just shot up into my 5 most wanted.
Sure, an angle here or there looks good, but the animations and textures (you know, those little things to immerse me) look bad.
And it wasn't just you, Samit. The multi in GTAIV did sound great on paper and failed in execution.
And to fail even when the person has a regular group of friends who all played it together and can MAKE fun out of a so-so experience, for ALL of them to walk away from it...that's a mighty big fail seeing as all we really want is to enjoy killing each other. We're not looking for perfection, we can forgive a lot.
Fingers crossed on Red Dead. But if Rockstar keeps up with it's reputation of the past, I expect the multi to do what's described, but with poor hit detection, those terrible animations and lots of chugging and excessive (by even open world standards) amount of pop up.
Prove me wrong, Rockstar! I want to be wrong!
But I think we know I won't be.
Unless of course you all played it on PS3, in which case - pity for you.

RDR is a definite buy for me, I cannot fucking wait!
Redem looks great. Posse mode looks cool, Hopefully I will be done with Just Cause 2 by then because I'm already like 37 hrs deep (Only played 4 story missions!) and I can't play anything else. I should be playing the GoW Collection in preparation for the inevitable GoW3 purchase but I cant stop fucking around in Panau.
I found the Hot Air Ballon yesterday and the beached whale, then I found the Sr71 Blackbird that shoots 4 rockets at a time and guns with anti aircraft shells. I then flew super high above the lost island
