Party foul: No cooperative quickplay option in Guitar Hero III?

Party foul: No cooperative quickplay option in Guitar Hero III? photo
     wii

One of the best new features in Guitar Hero II was the inclusion of a true cooperative mode. One person playing bass/rhythm guitar, the other person rocking out lead; it doesn't get much better. It's back in Guitar Hero III, of course, with one small (and puzzling) omission -- cooperative mode is not available in the game's quickplay mode.

From Game Informer's October 2007 review:

There is no cooperative quickplay option, making the popular party play experience a lot harder to achieve. In the co-op career, you'll only unlock songs in the particular difficulty combination you initially played on. If you played through all the songs on Expert-Hard, and your other friend comes over who plays on Medium, then he's screwed.

Ouch. The game scores well (8.75, and a second opinion of 9), particularly because both reviewers are impressed by the game's solid soundtrack (SLAYER!). But the lack of a quickplay option for cooperative mode is a huge loss, especially when you take into account that Guitar Hero is the kind of game that really comes to life when playing with other people at large, alcohol-fueled social gatherings.

Is this a big deal for you guys, or not so much?

Are you kidding me? Fuck this game. I sided with this game due to the soundtrack alone, but it's stupid ass design decisions that make games unplayable for me. Definitely NOT purchasing anymore.

So if I play on Hard, and my buddy comes over and can only do medium... Wow, what a glaring omission. I mean GH3 should be worried about Rock Bands social gathering abilities, right? Why cripple the game in this way?

Maybe i'm missing something...

My wife can only play up to Medium, and my friends are usually stuck on Easy. This game will never see the inside of my home.

thats stupid. I mean, I'm still getting the game, but what the hell is neversoft smoking? I mean seriously, why wouldn't you be able to turn on the game and just do quick play with your friend? and the whole retarded way of unlocking songs is stupid as well. Just go through career and once you get the songs there you go you have them and can play them on any difficulty whenever you want.

no big deal for me. the people i play with have mediocre geetar skills like i do and stick to medium. still, you'd think the option would be available. maybe it can come in an update if theres much of an uproar?

Okay, well, the leaked soundtrack a few days ago was making me think about getting GH3, but... well, at least I can put that extra cash towards Rock Band.

I'm still buying both games. I'm not sure why people find it so detrimental to pick one over the other.

What the FUCK, Neversoft?

I was thinking about getting this for Wii but forget it. Watch when they give DLC to unlock co-op...Ugh, I hope it does happen, but why couldn't they put it on the disc?

I can wait until I get a PS3/X360 with Rock Band, that was the last straw.

Maybe it's not in "quickplay" mode and it's in "multiplayer" mode just like in GH 2? If not then i guess I'll have to pass the songs in easy and medium u.u

I've never owned a guitar hero and as a result I have played ONLY while simultaneously consuming alcohol. Why would they do this to me?

Yeah that's a big deal for me because all my friends suck and now i can't co-op with them.
grrza's Avatar

Surely it must in the multiplayer menu, or some other menu. If it's missing from the game completely, I can understand the complaint. But the menus/gameplay options in GHII are so redundant, maybe they just trimmed the fat. If that's the case, then I hardly see how this is a deal breaker.

Also, just slightly related, I can't get over what a retardedly generic name "Rock Band" is. It's like DDR just being called "dance" or something.

So, all you'd have to do is play through co-op on whatever difficulty level, right?

@zanch

Just because it has the same name, doesn't mean it'll be the same game. The developers are the ones who make the game what it is. Harmonix looks like they're doing a fine job with Rock Band. From what I've seen, Neversoft is tonyhawking the GH franchise.

That's pretty stupid.

Still getting it though. Especially if Cliffs of Dover are put in. And Pride and Joy and the Seeker.

But even if that list is fake...come on. Velvet Revolver, Dragonforce, One, etc. And now pretty legit rumors of AC/DC.

Wow, so instead of adding features...they took some out? That makes total and complete sense.

I can't believe that Neversoft would do that. It makes so little sense, and would be completely akin to dropping a bowling ball on their own nuts. I'm thinking that quickplay will be similar to what it is in GHII, and that multiplayer will be where the co-op lives. To consider otherwise is simply lunacy.

Guys you are reading the review wrong. You can still play on medium while your partner plays expert or however you like. You just have to play the songs in order first on each difficulty with two people. If someone comes over and wants to play expert and you only play medium than yah you will have to start form the beginning and can't just pick any song but you can still play together.

@cerebral assassin: Yeah, we weren’t reading the review wrong. What you said in your comment is exactly what I gathered from the post, and if it’s true, it’s a ridiculously bonehead move on Neversoft’s part. Why would there only be a co-op career mode? If I beat the damn game on Expert in the single-player mode, why should I have to bring a friend over just so we can play “One” by Metallica on Expert-Medium? That is absolutely retarded.

As far as I’m concerned, Neversoft is changing things not for the better, but just for the sake of change — and that’s almost never good in any case. That new Battle mode (with “powerups” such as making your opponent hold down the whammy bar, etc.) just looks moronic and childish to me — am I the only one who thinks that? — and if nobody has misinterpreted this, then it really blows. Maybe it’s just me, because I’m more interested in playing my friend on Expert (I only have one friend who can play on Expert, and he’s actually better than me; my other friends either don’t like the game or play on Medium/Hard) in the Pro Face-off mode so we can see who is better at the game. The Battle mode could work as a distraction, but it doesn’t actually test your skill level at all because of those power-ups (granted, you have to hit a string of notes to get the power-ups, but that’s about all the skill that goes into it).

Regardless, I will still be buying Guitar Hero III, even though it will be with a heavy heart now, because if I were going to buy Rock Band, I’d want to go all-out (in other words, I want the bundle with all the instruments)...and I can’t spend that much on a video game.
