One of the best new features in Guitar Hero II was the inclusion of a true cooperative mode. One person playing bass/rhythm guitar, the other person rocking out lead; it doesn't get much better. It's back in Guitar Hero III, of course, with one small (and puzzling) omission -- cooperative mode is not available in the game's quickplay mode.
From Game Informer's October 2007 review:
There is no cooperative quickplay option, making the popular party play experience a lot harder to achieve. In the co-op career, you'll only unlock songs in the particular difficulty combination you initially played on. If you played through all the songs on Expert-Hard, and your other friend comes over who plays on Medium, then he's screwed.
Ouch. The game scores well (8.75, and a second opinion of 9), particularly because both reviewers are impressed by the game's solid soundtrack (SLAYER!). But the lack of a quickplay option for cooperative mode is a huge loss, especially when you take into account that Guitar Hero is the kind of game that really comes to life when playing with other people at large, alcohol-fueled social gatherings.
Is this a big deal for you guys, or not so much?

Also this is sort of a big deal. It's one of things where it's like: "Why the hell WOULDN'T they put it in?"
Maybe i'm missing something...
I was thinking about getting this for Wii but forget it. Watch when they give DLC to unlock co-op...Ugh, I hope it does happen, but why couldn't they put it on the disc?
I can wait until I get a PS3/X360 with Rock Band, that was the last straw.
Also, just slightly related, I can't get over what a retardedly generic name "Rock Band" is. It's like DDR just being called "dance" or something.
Just because it has the same name, doesn't mean it'll be the same game. The developers are the ones who make the game what it is. Harmonix looks like they're doing a fine job with Rock Band. From what I've seen, Neversoft is tonyhawking the GH franchise.
Still getting it though. Especially if Cliffs of Dover are put in. And Pride and Joy and the Seeker.
But even if that list is fake...come on. Velvet Revolver, Dragonforce, One, etc. And now pretty legit rumors of AC/DC.
As far as I’m concerned, Neversoft is changing things not for the better, but just for the sake of change — and that’s almost never good in any case. That new Battle mode (with “powerups” such as making your opponent hold down the whammy bar, etc.) just looks moronic and childish to me — am I the only one who thinks that? — and if nobody has misinterpreted this, then it really blows. Maybe it’s just me, because I’m more interested in playing my friend on Expert (I only have one friend who can play on Expert, and he’s actually better than me; my other friends either don’t like the game or play on Medium/Hard) in the Pro Face-off mode so we can see who is better at the game. The Battle mode could work as a distraction, but it doesn’t actually test your skill level at all because of those power-ups (granted, you have to hit a string of notes to get the power-ups, but that’s about all the skill that goes into it).
Regardless, I will still be buying Guitar Hero III, even though it will be with a heavy heart now, because if I were going to buy Rock Band, I’d want to go all-out (in other words, I want the bundle with all the instruments)...and I can’t spend that much on a video game.
