Part of latest Gears 2 patch probably not working offline photo
  share: Twitter Facebook Reddit Digg
filed under: #Epic Games

Some offline Gears of War 2 enthusiasts aren’t happy with Title Update 4. In addition to adding XP to Horde mode, Epic Games added oomph to the smoke grenade. The sissy projectile now causes a momentary cringe effect on players during animations. While people seem somewhat fine with the change, they aren’t in love with the update. According to a few rabble-rousers on the game’s official message board, the added cringe effect won’t work offline.

Title Update 4 was released on June 3 and was accompanied by a bonus XP weekend deal, a celebration of sorts for the American national holiday. Instead of barbequing or risking their lives with mini-ballistics, Gears 2 message board users have been furiously posting in a thread about the issue. It’s currently over 65 pages long.

Apparently, national videogame tournaments that feature Gears 2 are still playing games over LAN, so this is a bummer for those who desire to compete with Title Update 4.

We can’t verify the offline cringe claim. It’s 2009 and the Internet exists. But we get your complaint: just give Epic some time. Dudes are probably off for the weekend.

Weekend or not, Epic is probably the most epic source of glitchoramas, and give Bethesda a run for their money.

Anyone remember the Gears of 1 PC breaking issue? I kind of enjoy Gears 2, but the fact that it took months to get the matchmaking system even playable, and there's 1,000s of "Gears 2 glitch" youtube videos is pretty bad. The Microsoft certification process really needs to be overhauled, as does Epic's own Q&A team.

I'm still confused as to whether the title of this post is ironic or a victim of the typo fairy.

I've been playing gears all weekend, I love the update. Sucks for LAN tournaments though.

Also I really hope they keep the extra 500 XP for winning a match.

URGH, this update erased my war journal...

And in fucking hours of this update there has sprung an UNKILLABLE glitch.

Nice work Epic.

Worth noting that the previous 3 updates all had aspects which didn't get applied on LAN either. Things from 2 updates ago still haven't been applied to LAN either.

Leave it to epic to fuck up a game even more when the intent was to fix it.

@ Snaileb:

That guy should just consider himself lucky to be in such a lag free match. Seriously, I've never played a game that smooth online before.

Yeah...Um... Epic, you really should try this well-known type of game connection. It connects via the server. Everyone obviously hates the via host connection. This is a fucking shooting game, so give it the same connection type of one. Instead of working on all these stupid map packs, give more of a reason for everyone to want to buy them by spending the money on new servers and not for development of the map packs. My friends and I make jokes of this game because of how stupidly pointless the multiplayer is.

Yeah, got to love LAN play, internet matches just don't feel the same.

For the record, the smoke grenade change wasn't an "added oomph", it was a nerf. The smoke grenade used to knock you down and stun you completely.

@Hindesite: It needed to be nerfed. Whoever the fuck thought it was a good idea to have a smoke grenade used as an offensive weapon needs to be shot. The smoke sucks in Gears2,as it doesn't even have enough smoke to do what it's SUPPOSED to do, which is provide portable cover. Epic, as usual, fails.

I've been on it all weekend and loved it. Kurzicde. you and your friends are so wrong about the MP. It's such an awesome multiplayer experience that your comment just seems so, I don't know, uhh...misinformed? Perhaps it frustrates you because it's actually quite hard? Usedtabe. The smoke grenade works beautifully as moving cover, also it's great for tackling power weapons. It seems that those who diss the Gears 2 MP are people who probably haven't played it recently, as practically every glitch I hear peeps moaning about is no longer existent. It's not perfect, but since I've been playing Gears 2 MP, I find every other MP experience incredibly tame. Not to mention easy.

@Chaos Tea Cup: You sound like someone who never played Gears 1. Also, head over to the Gears forums. I guess all those pissed off people there(some long time fans) haven't played it recently either? And no, not all of the glitches are fixed, as there are some new ones coming from this failure of an update,

Fair enough, Usedta.. I wasn't trying to put any noses out of joint. I guess I must be lucky, because I've been playing Gears2 MP pretty much all of my free-time for about the last 5 months, and I haven't come across any glitches that would lead me to brand the experience as broken or shit. I get the occasional connection issue where I can run around, but can only fire non-ammo depleting blanks, but that's about it. Oh, there's the odd epileptic fit glitch, but they're rare too. Never messes up my enjoyment. I would like to have a go on Gears 1 because, yes you're right, I didn't play the MP (wasn't online when I played 1). But seriously, I'm mad addicted to 2, and so long as I'm happy, etc...

@Chaos: Sorry I came off as an ass, but it just gets to me when people call this game great. Because it is a step back from the first. Yes, the first had it's own share of problems, but most of those problems weren't even addressed in the sequel and still ruin it's gameplay, just worse than they ever were in the first. Then, add in all of these new problems, the crappy matchmaking(no user choice sucks. You could play whatever you wanted in the first, and get games immediately too), and it all just seems for naught. But I'm not mad at those who enjoy Gears 2, I'm mad because I know that Epic will point to you guys and try to say that Gears 2 is a success, while knowing you never got to see how amazing the first one is. If you ever want to check out the first one, let me know. I still have a group of regulars that play(some from here too). It has a much deeper learning curve, and a cheap active down, but when you get good, you feel like you are good. And when you are good at Gears 1, no random "new" player is going to be able to put you down due to having a better connection or being host. Gears 1 actually rewards you for learning it's intricacies.

Had to register cause I agree with you usedtabe. This game WAS for the hardcore... I never played GoW1 but the second my friend showed me the "intricacies" to learning and becoming better at GoW2, I was hooked like white on rice. Games like this take skill, knowledge, and time. Then they decided to dumb down the game to bring in new potential DLC'ers. Which is fine... but then they decide to implement bat sh*t crazy ideas such as psuedo-lag, stunning SMOKE grenades, and delays in gameplay... it's been the driving force for many GoW2 fans to look to something else. No new player (no matter the game) should be on the same par with someone who's been playing it. How can they anyway? They still have to learn how they broke the thing in order to understand how the system is trying to work in their favor... which is full of p*** poor logic at EPIC.

I have no problem believing and taking relief in their GoW3 Pre-Orders taking a massive hit, as well as this mockery of a DLC they call ALL FRONTS, which is a major b button slap with host powers to their once loyal fans, which I don't consider myself a part of, as I still haven't gone to GoW1... EPIC has alienated their true fan base for a bunch of fence sitters. Who are more than happy to point at Microsoft instead of EPIC because they have no true concept on how this business works. It's called RETURNING CUSTOMERS EPIC!
