Parasitic patent troll pimpslapped by Electronic Arts photo

Patent troll Tim Langdell -- a man who has made a career out of trying to sue companies who use the word "edge" -- was beaten by Electronic Arts after a short legal battle. The court declared that not only did EA have the rights to the name Mirror's Edge, but that Langdell's business practices could warrant further criminal charges.

Langdell has been accused by the court of making fraudulent claims to the US Patent and Trademark Office. He was also declared "suspect" and reprimanded for "trolling" videogame companies. He could be forced to incur criminal penalties for his parasitic behavior if this goes further.

Langdell founded Edge Games in 1990, and the company hasn't released a game since 1994. Instead, Langdell has sued any other game maker who dares to use the word "Edge" in its products, as well as Marvel entertainment and various tech companies. It's not known if he's ever tried to sue U2's lead guitarist.

Electronic Arts has said that it's "pleased" with the court's decision. As you'd expect.

Great news! Two stories back to back about gaming-oriented antagonists. Now if we could get an article about Kotick falling face first into some shit then my day would be made.

Great news, I'm glad to hear he got what was coming to him.

However I am very concerned about Edge Of Twilight. Not because of this moron, although this story did remind me about it. It's been so long since we've heard anything about the game and there were rumours that it was cancelled. I really hope not, I thought it looked incredibly promising.

I love this. I have a whole new respect for EA, mostly because of the way they stuck up for Mobigame, a small 2 man studio from France who made the incredibly addictive EDGE for the iPhone. If I remember they payed some of Mobigames legal fee's and counter-sued Langdell after he tried to sue them for Mirror's Edge. I could be wrong about the legal fee's though. Still, EA are awesome.

@Zen17h; Lol

But yeah, great news. Langdell had this coming sooner or later, and it's such a shame it's taken this long. I suppose all we can hope for is EDGE Magazine, Mobigames and EA (Possibly others?) to join forces and just take him down.

The videogame industry should declare this a holiday along with the day Jack Thompson was disbarred.

All the links related to this article seem to include the 'trolling' quote.

So I guess 'trolling' is a legal term now, and something you can get sued for. Best start using proxies from now on I guess.

Interestingly, he managed to get Future Publishing to "license" the term for the electronic version of their Edge magazine. What a cock.

Hint: They don't mean internet trolling.

They're more referring to the old fable of the troll living under a bridge who would declare a fee to be paid in order to be allowed passage across the bridge. The troll had nothing to do with the bridge, apart from merely claiming something to be his that was, actually, belonging to everyone and thus nobody at all.

Any sympathy he could have had from me—it wouldn't have been much, to be sure—disappeared after reading the REASON his behavior could warrant criminal charges: the forging of evidence. That's JAIL.

Patent and trademark trolling is one thing. Manufacturing evidence to support your trademark is something entirely different.

@Lenigod: the point being he has all these titles he says are being sold, but have you ever seen them in any retail outlets?

Yessss! There is some justice in the world.

Thanks go to EA for actually taking this one on. Obviously they did it mostly for themselves, but this helps a lot of other folks too.

And lo, the great troll was struck down, and he smote his ruin upon the mountainside. And EA, and Activision, and Mobigame, and all the free people of the world, good and evil, did rejoice and make merry for a week and a day. And they all lived happily forevermore. The end.

I don't really understand what he patented in the first place. Not the word 'edge', surely? You can't patent something that's not new. *confusion*
