Quantcast

Pants off to Patrick Goschy, an ex-Midway employee who may have came up with the Nintendo Wii control scheme years ago. Go Nintendo links us to this demonstration video by Pat, which seems to have been created back in 2000. Apparently Pat is suing Nintendo.

Here he uses accelerometer-equipped controllers to play the Dreamcast version of Ready 2 Rumble. What the hell? This looks more playable than Wii Boxing!

According to Go Nintendo, Nintendo says that Mr. Goschy had no involvement with the Wii. It looks like he was on the right track, though.

If this does go to court (which I doubt), I'm sure Mr. Goschy will have to explain why he felt the need to demonstrate this technology in plaid boxers.

In the film/ad business there is a saying.
"Being creative just means hiding your sources"

Proves true yet again.

thx for the post.

Does he have a patent? I didn't see that mentioned, and demoing some jury-rigged crap in your boxers doesn't count as one.

Under what grounds is he attempting suing big N? That he had the idea first? Does he actually have any patents or anything to base his lawsuit on?

Very clever. The jury will be so disgusted that they'll lose the ability to think rationally and just award him the money ASAP to get him out of there.

Perhaps I should start suggesting this tactic to our clients.

How come he can make that control scheme work on Ready To Rumble boxing, but games like Resident Evil 4 and every other PS2/GC port had to be remade to work with Wii controls?

Also, I have a hard time believing that this was from 2000 when nobody's ever seen or heard of it until now. Why didn't this guy bring this up a year ago if he knew he had the idea first?

@freeman

He said in the video that the microcontroller just mapped movements to button presses. In the better ports, like RE4, they do more than map button presses to control movements. They also incorporate aiming.

Shadow, him having a patent doesn't actually matter in the U.S. The patent law here gives precedent to the person who can prove they invented something first, not who patented it first. Elsewhere in the world it's who files for the patent first, however. This will prove interesting as Nintendo is technically a Japanese company and yet sells the Wii in the U.S. where this guy probably lives. He may, in fact, have a real case on his hands, pants or no pants.

@B-Radicate:

But is this technology even similar to the Wiimote? Also, tons of people have done homemade motion technology on the internet, so does that mean no one but them can ever sell something like this? And how do you prove who the first was? Sounds like BULLSHIT to me.

How come this tech from 2000 looks like it's more accurate? If you worked on eliminating the delay, this might actually be better.

@Necros: I think it's because the motions translate to button presses, with preset actions assigned to them, sort of how Twilight Princess was set up, while other Wii games try to more directly translate your waggles, thus the complications. I think that in terms of simplicity, the pre-assigned actions approach may be better at first, but there is still more potential if they can perfect the exact translation of movement.

Also, the motion control idea had been around for a while, so I don't think anyone can really stake a claim on any one technique, even Nintendo.

They're not boxers. Those types of shorts were actually in fashion in the late 90's. I remember a few guys in high school that listened to the likes of Dave Matthews Band and Phish wore them all the time.

But that's not nearly as fun as saying he's wearing no pants.

You know this was probably a tech demo to try and sell motion controls to the big wigs. I bet someone is kicking themselves now.

But I think motion controls in general are not a new invention. Even nintendo didn't invent motion controls they implement it just like they implemented the analog stick on the 64 and Implemented the touch screen on the DS. My opinion is the patten belongs with the accelerometers more than the implementaion. Really just look back there were gyro mouses and the freestyle by ms the powerglove and the Uforce and countless thinks like the cyberpuck when VR was in its hay day.

He'll get paid if only because it is eerily similar and, well, 8 years old. Someone probably saw this back in the day and when the Nintendo execs were asking for new ideas for the Wii, he rattled it off as his own. What I really wonder about is whether or not this would have kept the Dreamcast, which I love like a child, alive and well.

He's going to get a settlement, just because he thinks he has enough grounds to sue. Nintendo, like any other company facing litigation of this sort, can't afford to let it go to courts. Even if they win, they're losing big in publicity. He's going to get a comfy settlement and a gag order. Just like the folks that sue Sony, Microsoft, Apple or Comcast. It's always cheaper to settle.
