Panel de Pon headed to NDS ... in Japan

Panel de Pon headed to NDS ... in Japan photo

This week's Famitsu had some interesting news: one more go-round for Panel de Pon. For those of you unfamiliar with the name, chances are you've taken a shot or two with the game; Pon is better known in America under wacky face-lift conversion aliases, like Tetris Attack on the SNES, Pokemon Puzzle League on the GBC and N64, and most recently the Gameboy Advance Dr. Mario / Puzzle League combo cart. It's also one of the best puzzle games ever made.

Panel De Pon will be hitting Japan on the DS in April, so in the mean time, let us join hands and pray for the following: that it be Nintendo WFC-ready, that it be brought to America within a matter of months, and that it not be slapped with some other game's aesthetic style just to make it palatable. I might be so bold as to presume that the orientation of the screenshots means the game will be oriented book-style, like Hotel Dusk: Rm 215 or Brain Age, and wouldn't that just be dandy? We need more of them alternative orientation games.

Check the gallery for screenshots from Famitsu.

*Nerdy Interlude: Technically, the GBC version was called Pokemon Puzzle Challenge and was actually superior to the N64 version, which wasn't released in Japan.*

As a firm advocate that Panel de Pon is the best puzzler on the planet, I can definitely say I'm excited about this and will be buying this, either as an import or domestic release.

Also, don't you think it's okay to add some license to it? Tetris Attack was cool, and the recent Tetris DS showed that Nintendo skins in puzzle games can be cool.

Back in the day my friend Allen and I used to have 3D Pokemon Puzzle League battles that would last for about 30 minutes or more... My obsession with Tetris Attack has been heavy for the past 11 years. I even won a Tetris Attack backpack when I was like 10 because I owned so many people at a Blockbuster tournament. Yeah... those were the days.

I loved Pokemon Puzzle Challenge on GBC, oh the hours of fun playing on Intense Mode. Seems like I never unlocked one Pokemon tho.. I should do that sometime.

This is by far the BEST PUZZLE GAME EVER!
If it has Wi-Fi Network capabilities like Tetris DS, this wil be one of the coolest games of all time!

This would be awesomeness of the highest order, if Panel de Pon were to be released on the DS. I remember playing Tetris Attack 10 years ago, and I went through a single Endless session for about an hour.

This is absolutely my favorite puzzle game, ever. That said, I don't think I'll buy this, because I've already got Dr. Mario/Puzzle League for the GBA, which is permanently fixed in the GBA slot in my DS anyway.

Checked out the exact screen resolution of the DS screens, compared it to the resolution of those screenshots (because DS screens are rarely ever scaled up/down, it just ruins them) and yes, the screens being shown MUST be book-orientation.

I've never really tried getting into Panel de Pon or related games, but I could see myself enjoying them, because I just recently tried playing Puyo Puyo more often, and found I like it (after I wasn't terrible playing it). Tetris is still my preferred puzzle game, probably always will be.
