Pandora open-source portable game system gives pants tingles photo

I love both of my portable game systems dearly. The PlayStation Portable and the Nintendo DS both have their pluses and minuses, but one of the two manages to go with me wherever I go. I would've never imagined that these two prized possessions of mine would take a back seat to another portable, but I'm already sold on the Pandora.

Pandora is an open-source portable videogame system, much like the GP2X. According to galagabug's Destructoid Community Blog, this little number can do full PSOne emulation without hiccuping, and Nintendo 64 emulation is also a possiblity. It sports a touch screen, video outputs, a microphone, dual analog nubs, WiFi, USB and more. Get the full rundown of specs here. All of this is packed into a system about the size of the Nintendo DS Lite.

The official Web page says that this system is set to launch soon, spring 2008, and the cost is set at about $330. What do you think? Is this your dream portable? Would this be the ultimate emulation system? Do you agree with galagabug's "burn your DS" statement?

I think the name "Pandora" is already taken by a billion companies already.

Otherwise, could be neat?

They need to replace the second Y key with a Z key, I would have thought this would have been fixed in beta.

Look cool if real. I purchased a GP32 years ago, to play rom games. A cool little hand held it was too.

Would Pandora give Nintendo more cause to push out a new DS? Who knows, but the plot thickens like gravy.

@cowboy TTop I doubt Nintendo would push a new DS for something like this. Handhelds like this appeal to a very niche group of people.

Only downside is that opening it unleashes all of the evils of the world. Which kinda sucks.

Why does it have a keyboard? Since the system has a touch screen, I'd rather see 6 face buttons and a minimalist yet beautiful GUI, much like the Eee PC.

I doubt this will push Nintendo to release the next DS; only Sony has the power to do that.

Yeah i've been following this since whenever the GP2X community had made a massive topic about such as thing, with the dev's as awesome as they are this will be great.

I've been waiting... 6 or so months for Openmoko to be released in a stable form? This looks interesting, but open-source consoles/platforms that are already flooded by markets of proprietary hardware just seem to do better. Granted, I haven't used an openmoko yet, so I could just be waiting for the stable release for nothing :P

Would probably make a decent portable MAME system as well it sounds like. But what about the battery life?

Why does this feel like a really late April fool's joke?

I know those are just concept mockups and it's not from a big name company, but it seems... bleh

Looks awesome to me. I'm thinking of getting one. I was going to try and learn programming so I could make my own 8-bit games (the good kind no one makes anymore) and if I could get them running on this then that would be sexy indeed.

Using a touch screen in that configuration would be annoying as hell. Holding it in book form would require crossing your input hand over the one supporting the system and in any configuration you'd be putting pressure against the hinge when you press on it, which I assume would lead to it snapping back like the DS hinge does. Not that it would break it, it'd just be a complete pain in the ass to use. That's something Nintendo got COMPLETELY right by having two screens and only having the lower one be touch-sensitive so that you're supporting the part you have to press down on, even though it isn't always the most ergonomic design.

If that's their final design I say put that shit back in the oven, because it's only half-baked. The specs look good though.

Duuhhh! yeah! right! like the PC ,DS ,Mac or any Linux box, purely devoted to piracy, subtle code in the OS prevents any possibility of Indi code or open source ports running on it at all....NOT! :-p

IT can't be much bigger than The sega nomad or the Original gameboy.
Especially for basically a really amazing and useful device.

We should be thankful to the innovations brought by technology..because, now we already have portable devices such as video games, cellphones, laptop computers and a lot to mention.Portable radio also belongs to the list. Slacker Radio is actually quite the thing. Slacker radio may well outpace Sirius for ad-free radio that leaves their local based counterparts in the dust, partially because of ease of use, convenience, partially because unlike satellite it's free and also because Slacker isn't staring down the barrel of possible bankruptcy. You won't need installment loans to get this ad free radio, its broadcast for free over the internet. All you need to do is register for free with an email address, and you're good to go – which you can also do with its counterpart Pandora. No ads, no self important and really annoying deejays, and you pick the play list. Who would stick to normal radio when you could get <a rev="vote for" href="http://personalmoneystore.com/moneyblog/2009/03/18/slacker-radio-amps-competition-online-streaming/">Slacker Radio</a>?
