Pandemic and EA reveal Lord of the Rings: Conquest

Pandemic and EA reveal Lord of the Rings: Conquest photo
     PC
The rumors of Pandemic working on a new Lord of the Rings title have been confirmed today, and it's definitely not the dead-on-arrival role-playing title, The White Council. Sticking with what they know best, Pandemic will deliver a large-scale battle title, Lord of the Rings: Conquest to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC later this year.

Think their popular Battlefront games, just with trolls, elves, and orcs, because that's the direction they seem to be taking with Conquest. The game will span a number of the epic battlefields from the franchise, with raging battles that will feature up to 150 characters on-screen at once. Conquest will also sport a four-player cooperative campaign, either online or via split-screen, in addition to other online head-to-head modes (currenly planned for up to sixteen players).

Lord of the Rings: Conquest is scheduled for release this fall.

[Update: The original story incorrectly stated that the title would support up to eight players online. Pandemic has contacted us to say that they're currently planning to support sixteen players, although that's not set in stone. The story has been updated accordingly.]

Woah, I'm pretty much sold on this idea. I'm in desperate need of a new LOTR game.

A flaming sword? Really? Because that just screams LotR...

I'm going to need to see a few gameplay videos before I consider this as a non-bargain bin purchase.

@ loki d20: Dude, the Witch King wielded a flaming sword when he confronted Gandalf in Gondor. There's plenty of magic weapons in the books.

I would rather have had an RPG, but I'll still check this out.

Dude, there aren't that many magic items in the books in general. And, pray tell, which human warrior was it that had a flaming sword? There was one flaming sword wielded by the freaking Witch King and no other. It's a slippery slope when they start handing out magical items to humans in LotR games. LotRs isn't D&D where you loot magic items all over the place, it's about the mundane versus the mystical and unknown.

I guess you'd have to be a huge LotR fan to really be excited an enjoy this, but I guess I'm just not that kind of person. :(

Loki d20, I want to buy you an outside.

Why? Because I believe they should respect the origin of the content? They're just making your typical fantasy game with LotR slapped to it. You paint me as some sort of social pariah who hides in his mommy's basement because he thinks it's lame that they can't do something as simple as that. Please, I've read the books only once and actually hate his writing style, but I can at least respect his mythos when I'm going to slap the name of his creations on something.

@ loki d20: The Balrog had a flaming sword too. :) There's plenty of magical artifacts in Middle-Earth. The Rings, the palantir, the blades Merry & Pippin find in the Barrow-Downs, Orcrist, Sting, Grond the battering ram, Turin's cursed sword... The entire hidden Elvish city of Gondolin was created basicaly as a magical armory to use against evil. Yes, Tolkien isn't D&D. There's still many instances of magic though, it's just seen through the eyes of the hobbits and thus not broken down into the "+4 against undead short sword" nonsense.

Ultimately, this is a freaking video game based on a magicial fantasty world. Guys are going to have flaming swords every now and then. It might just be a power up or combo move. Deal with it.

Deal with it.

I'm surprised they're taking the fantasy elements this far, and that's just my opinion. I'm not going to change it and just roll over on my opinion, nor do I expect you to do the same.

Deal with that however you please (Friday night drinking making fun of me and others on the interwebs I'm hoping).

Hey guys, just wanted to clarify -- the game supports up to 16 players online. There was a miscommunication during the interview translation earlier on IGN.

It's been corrected here:
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/872/872392p1.html

Sixteen is the current online count, but it's not set in stone, and there's always a chance it could go higher. :)
