Painkiller next in line for movie adaptation photo

It's becoming such a common occurrence that I can't even muster the strength to object -- Painkiller, developed by Polish studio People Can Fly, will be the next game on the list of blockbuster-hopeful adaptations of video game properties for the big screen, Variety is reporting. No mention of he who shall not be named in the works yet, however, but the team assembled thus far has quite a list of accomplished pictures, including "Elf" and the upcoming Eddie Murphy flick "Starship Dave". That's just the pedigree I'd be hoping to produce a flick about, y'know, demon-slaying.

It's the first time DreamCatcher's sold off feature rights to one of its titles. VP George Chastain told Daily Variety the company opted for making a deal with Guy Walks Into a Bar partly because of the shingle's plans to blend the fast-paced action, the wide array of weaponry and cast of demonic characters in the feature adaptation.

Guy Walks has hired Ben McCaw to adapt. His credits include "Gideon's Vault," a finalist in the Austin Film Festival screenwriting competition; "Art of the Fake"; and "Class of the Living Dead. Guy Walks and Deep River Prods. recently wrapped "Starship Dave," starring Eddie Murphy. The shingle also produced "Elf."

Not to say that the game itself was exceptionally bad, but what is it with studios going after the games with virtually nothing by way of viable plot? What's that? Oh, guns. Well, sure, it's got a lot of those.

[Via Variety; thanks Justin!]

There are not that many flicks around about people shooting hordes of demons. Don't forget that Painkiller was one of the games in one of the videogame championships a while back, so it got a lot of coverage which is what producers fap to.

The movie will be terrible tho, 5.2 rating on imdb with 6729 votes ;)

+10 points for mentioning Gary Busey by name instead of "that dude that looked like Nick Nolte"!

It's got more story than Rampage...

The story to Painkiller isnt really Cinema material though. It's more like a sci-fi 1 hour series type thing you see on Space.

Dark, unshaven man in leather jacket dies. He is brought back to life by Heaven to fight the Armies of Hell, so he can repay his debt, or save a loved one. Each week he fights a different kind of hellspawn, like the skull biker dudes, or the crazy reaper guys, endless possiblities!

Isn't that Spawn in reverse?

And Pew, as far as I'm concerned, Nick Nolte looks like Gary Busey.

Painkiller has a cool enough concept for a film but it could never be anything more than a violent CG filled popcorn movie.

Painkiller was one of the best games of 2004 and in my personal top 5 of all time.

WTF is Painkiller? I've been gaming 30 years. I missed this game? Great lets make another movie based on a lesser known video game and lets ignore the big franchises. *cough* Hitman *cough*

gary busey comment is funny, he would probably fill the part fine.

second. if it wasn't for gun based movies, i don't think governor arnold would be the man he is today.

If they gave this to Jerry Bruckheimer, I could actually see this not being too bad. He doesn't need a story... He just likes making things blow up or get shot.

I loved painkiller.... it really brought me good memories (Duke mukem, Shadow warrior) of the times when the inloy important thing was to shoot everything that moved and find every secret in the level!
