Industry analyst Michael "Stinkerbell" Pachter has made one of his fantastical predictions, claiming that the Xbox 360 outsold the PlayStation 3 by a ratio of 2:I in North America. He believes the upcoming sales figures for December will make him right.
The love machine states that Wii sold 2.6 million units, down 33% from last year, that the PS3 sold 1.2 million, down 12%, and that the 360 sold 2.5 million, up 91%. It will be up to Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo whether or not we'll know how right Pachter is, as the NPD now leaves it up to platform holders to release sales data.
The holiday period is, obviously, a huge battleground in the console wars, and with the release of Move and Kinect, people have been eager to see how well the systems performed. Sony has refused to release sales figures for Move, which leads one to reasonably assume it didn't do all that well, while Microsoft has boasted of 8 million Kinect sales in its first 60 days.
With that prior knowledge, Pachter might not be too far off the mark.

So?
Global figures or gtfo pachter.
Seriously, can we just all stop talking about the guy? He's useless, spouts meaningless bollocks and has admitted as much himself. Thre's no need to pay attention to a single thing he says.
@Bakewell:
I certainly hope he doesn't. The 360 outsold the PS3 for both unit and software sales in the UK.

Dammit I beat myself again.
+like Sexualchocolate said the ps3 has always sold relatively bad in US
Haha. So true. I love the idea that if Microsoft hadn't released one of, if not 'the' faultiest piece of electronics in history, they probably wouldn't be ahead of the PS3 in sales. And despite all of those re-buys and the year head start the 360 had, the PS3 has still managed to close within 4-5 million in sales worldwide.
I guess irresponsibility can be profitable!
@Qlum - 3.55 is capable of playing homebrew applications and loading Linux, fail0verfl0w and George Hotz specifically stated the hack was not for pirated games, as that requires additional keys they haven't worked on yet.
Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo will continue to make lots of money. At certain times of the year one of those companies will earn more than the other 2.
Those without any moral compass, maturity or all 3 consoles will rage at my predictions and the figures I share.
I have been known to be wrong because I'm only human but the one thing I can be sure about us that the largest majority of the destructoid readership will act as though I have resurrected their childhood pets just so I could kill them again in a bloody, cruel and prolonged fashion.
@Vallanthaz: The 360s failure rate is still astronomical, and I'm inclined to believe accusations that MS's unit sales numbers are inflated by consumers replacing faulty hardware. However, that doesn't change that cross-platform titles consistently sell more copies on 360. So either the failure rate isn't as high as everyone claims, or the few 360 owners out there just like buying three copies of every game.
Reward for failure - the real American Dream.
;) x
Or that third party American publishers and developers sell more copies on the console that has more systems in America. Absolutely baffling concept I know.
Some Japanese developers are relevant, but not all, and certainly not most. It's the same with all developers. There a plenty of developers in Japan that are content to be completely confined to their country and have no interest in foreign markets. These developers are largely irrelevant. They can go on forever about how great the PS3 is for their garbage Gundam games or dating sims but there's little to it.
As with many of the previous posters, is this really a surprise? The PS3's main userbase is Japan and Eastern Europe. Plus, Kinect is far more appealing than Move to the motion control fad-fans, as Move is simply a wireless Wiimote.
More importantly, who cares?
Move simply has far more applications that it can be adapted to, as well as being more precise than the Wiimote.
In fact I probably play the 360 more right now because that's where I've got Medal of Honor.
But the Macbook most of all, because you know, WoW.
I'm actually still awaiting a friend to accept my XBL request who recently (like a year ago) got a PS3, turns out he hasn't turned his 360 on for a long long time.
I have 10-15 IRL friends with PS3's, and they all love them. Except for Fernandez, his broke before Xmas and he bought it second hand off of someone, so yeah, bummer.
Don't get me wrong have a lot of friends with Xboxes too, well most of them have 2x Xboxes, a working one and a broken one. LOL.
Well, there we have it, people! Scientific analysis confirms 3-1 sales. Seriously, why do people say stuff like this?
Worldwide, Sony and Microsoft were basically a wash with the PS3 and 360. Sony owned the first half of the year after their redesign, price drop, and a slew of exclusives, and Microsoft owned the second half with Kinect, a redesign, and Halo. Both were statistical spikes with easy to see causes, so there is no real reason to assume a definitive trend. 2011 looks to be Kinect and Gears of War versus a cluster of PS3 exclusives. We know Kinect has been able to move an amazing amount of hardware, but the first half of 2011 will show us if Kinect goes viral like the Wii did, or if it continues to sell software to the consumer after purchase. Kinect software attachment rate is the big variable going into the new year.
The PS3 is lined up for a great software year.....
Killzone 3, Infamous 2, Resistance 3 and Uncharted 3.....
Looks to be a good year for 3rd party games too.......
So I see no reason for those that own just a PS3 to be Disappointed
And move...yeah, well. Still no games.
Microsoft doesn't use "shipped" when they release sales figures.
And Not a Fan boy i own both.
Microsoft announced at CES that they had "sold" 8 million Kinects TO RETAILERS... = Shipped
Since Jim enjoys pointing out that Sony announced shipped numbers instead of sold, why can't he for Microsoft this time?
I didn't really mean to pick on you, and that was probably harsher than I intended, but you do see a lot of people make statements based on coincidental data like that, and it's kind of a pet peeve. Stay online very long, and you will see hordes of people extrapolate world-wide sales from their last trip to the mall. I had no problem with the numbers you gave, only that one statement.
VGChartz has the PS3 at 14.4m and the 360 at 14.3m worldwide YTD, so I think it's fair to say both companies should be pleased. 2011 is very interesting to me, because it's basically going to come down to Microsoft's Kinect against a bunch of core-gamer exclusives on the PS3.
