Videogame analyst and warrior of the north Michael Pachter has expressed his dismay at the perceived decline of videogame hardware. Looking at the July 2009 sales figures, Pachter believes that "the manufacturers have made a strategic error by maintaining pricing for too long."
"The Wii remains at its November 2006 launch price of $249.99, and the core PS3 SKU has not seen a price cut since October 2007," he states. "We think that the negative software trend is less attributable to a weak software line-up, and can only conclude that until consumers are sufficiently interested in buying consoles, it will be difficult for publishers alone to drive sales higher each month.
"Fortunately, we anticipate imminent price cuts to occur soon. Rumors of an imminent price cut by Sony and a console upgrade by Microsoft are rampant. One rumored scenario includes clearing the 80Gb PS3 model to $249 from $399 and launching a new 120 Gb PS3 Slim for $299 and clearing the 60 Gb Xbox 360 Pro at $199 and re-pricing the 120 Gb Xbox 360 Elite at $249."
Pachter believes that neither Sony nor Nintendo will hit their targets without a price cut. He also believes the DS, DSi and PSP will each see price reductions, and adds that the PSPgo will retail at $199 some time in 2010.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
NINTENDO = GREEDY!! they could lower the price....cause they earn enough money for every console they sell.
I personally would gladly buy a Wii if it would retail for a more sensible price of 150 EUR.
And the PS3, while good value on it's own, pales in comparison to the 360 (which offers better multiplat games for only 250 EUR).
Price cut please! $249 sounds a bit too good to be true but I'll keep my blind positivity. Ignorance is bliss.
Oh really, Pachter? As opposed to all of those imminent things that occur far into the future?
@Jim: love the pic, the book brings back memories ^^
You have just made me forget all my grievances with you in the past, why? Because the header image is perhaps the best piece of artwork I've ever seen!
I love the Hungry Caterpillar and think the art design is pure collage porn... thank you sir.
@Topic
Nintendo = Greedy, but have turned into a butterfly.
Sony = Not doing as bad as people make out, only 7.something million behind the 360... which is impressive when you consider it was released a year after (year and a half in EU) than the 360 at a much higher price point.
/me then looks at the girl next door with the white dress and flower in her hair that keeps getting alcohol poisoning at house parties and constantly needs to be looked at
/me then turns and sees a fat ugly man wearing a brad pitt mask, running in slow motion in grass fields with masses of families whom have smiles on their faces, unaware that this man plans to molest their children and take over the world.
...It is a hard choice isn't it?
$249.99 for a PSPgo at launch?
Hmm...
You know what? I'll just keep saying "There will be no price cut" after every Patcher announcment. in the end, I'll be right a fuckton of times, and Patcher will only be right ONCE.
I just get so sick and tired of hearing this guy run his mouth about what may or may not happen.
I also think that Nintendo sould lower the price of the Wii since it is a bit pricier than some 360 SKUs, and the DS Lite should get a price cut and be discontinued by Nintendo in about a year, IDK about the DSi.
There you go, I can also be a videogame analyst.. So as everyone that can ellaborate an opinion about stuff like that :)
"PS3 is worth every single penny."
Says the man with the RRoD as his avatar : )
We are all "game analysts", we made not be paid for it, but we analyze this junk as much if not more then these "professionals". Why is his opinion on this taken seriously and newsworthy? Has he ever predicted something correctly?
I would wager Miss Cleo has more success then him...
Maybe I SHOULD ramble about price cuts and use words like "undeniable imminent" and "net gross." Would I get put on the front page?
I seriously see something from this retard every day on Joystiq, and was hoping Destructoid wouldn't jump on his blithering spittle boat.
That being said, I do think a PS3 price cut is coming, though it probably won't be until either Uncharted 2 or God of War 3 comes out. Maybe then I could actually afford one (and then afford upgrading my DVD library to blu-ray? Probably not). As for a Wii price cut...good luck. I could see them starting to bundle motion plus with it and saying "look! It's still 250, but now you get this piece of plastic that SHOULD have been on the original Wii for FREE! What a great deal!"
But seriously, a $250 Xbox 360 elite would be downright insane. That would be the best deal EVER.
I agree with your statements 100%
xbox arcade is $200 now. k thx.

/me looks at hot as fuck, high priced escort in the shiny black dress and knows that she will do what needs to be done...but the price...sheesh.
