Many gamers have already assumed that the next generation of videogames will officially kick off next year, and a number of rumors suggest that we'll be seeing the third iteration of the Xbox soon (I won't say "Xbox 720" because ugh). Analyst Michael "Colorful Erection" Pachter is more cynical, however, going so far as to call any talk of a 2012 Xbox release silly.
"Those rumors are silly," he said. "Microsoft is still selling a ton of Xbox 360s, and they won't replace the existing one until sales begin to slow. I think the rumors are based upon leaks about modifying the current Xbox 360 to allow it to operate Windows 8. I fully expect a new model of Xbox 360 by holiday 2012, but don't think we see a new console altogether from Microsoft until 2014."
2014 is quite a way away, and with the Xbox 360 undoubtedly showing its age, I wonder if Microsoft can wait that long. The PS2 still sold a ton when the PS3 was out, and while Sony's obviously a different company, I would say that console releases are about more than just replacing the falling sales of the last machine. Keeping up with the Joneses and grabbing press attention with shiny new toys is just as, if not more, important. I don't think the Xbox 360's success can be taken as sole evidence that a new console isn't on the horizon.

Although, at the moment, this is what I see happening as well,minus the windows 8 360.
This time the PS4 will come out first and the game of see saw will continue.
I don't mind, I'm actually quite happy with the current generation. But a new PS4 i'll just have to buy!! a new Xbox i'll consider, i suppose, once it's been out a while and if it gets a good reputation and if it gets any good games.

If you know anything about pachter and his crazy predictions, you know that he is usually wrong.
But 2013~2014 seems likely to me as well.
I'm still leaning towards the year after 2012. GTAV, Halo 4 both haven't come out yet, add to the fact that yes the 360 is doing better than they have for a while, why slow that momentum? Everything is kind of on the rise for you Microsoft.
Plus ... does MS really also want to piss off the mllions of people who just bough Kinect also when the 720 launches with Kinect 2.0?
This announcement might happen due to ignorance but I sincerely hope not. It will piss off many developers, consumers and publishers. But really it doesn't really matter whether or not it's announced next year, the problem is when it launches which... I hope isn't until 2014. I think ultimately it's not good for the industry in the long run if it is released much earlier.
It does seem that way... I guess I was overly dramatic lol.

7 years is a great run for the 360. It's time to upgrade and launch Kinect with DUAL ANALOG "move esc" wands which would make it useful for hardcore games.
You do realize that it is the end of November, right? There are 39 days left before it is no longer 2011. Black friday is THIS friday. I want you to think about this, and then tell me how likely it is that Microsoft will release a console that they havn't even announced, in the next 6 weeks.

Undoubtedly they are working on the next system, but I doubt they are in any rush.
I also don't think they are in a rush cause I doubt Sony or MS think of the Wii U as a serious threat and Sony probably wants to milk the PS3 a couple more years since it took them so long to get where they are now.
I think 2014 is a good time for new systems. 2013 for the announcements.
Whether this ends up being good or bad for the companies, who knows, since they usually never think that far ahead, usually not more then a fiscal year.

Nintendo is a year away and they're only giving out final hardware kits now. They gave their first dev kits out in March, so that's closer to 2 years before launch, rather than one year. I think 2014 might be a bit too far off, but a holiday 2013 launch seems more likely. I think 2014 is more PS4 territory!

Sony releases the Playstation on a six-year schedule.
Playstation 1 - 1994
Playstation 2 - 2000
Playstation 3 - 2006
This puts the Playstation 4 right around a late 2012 or early 2013 release assuming they hold true to form. Also factor in that the Wii-U will be out by 2012. Now factor in that Microsoft forced the 360 out early knowing the RROD issue existed simply to get their system out before Sony (aka: burnt over a billion dollars in future losses just to have their name out first).
What in the blue hell makes you think Microsoft would let Nintendo have a two year head start and Sony have a full year on them?
