Pachter: PS3 price drop in '08, PS2 this holiday photo

Famed industry analyst Michael Pachter (he was just on Bonus Round) says that he expects to see a PS3 price drop next year, right before Grand Theft Auto IV and Metal Gear Solid 4 are released.

"We do expect Sony to be in a position to cut the price of the PS3 in early 2008, when blockbuster games Grand Theft Auto IV and PS3 exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4 will launch," he offered.

As for this year, Pachter expects a price drop for the PlayStation 2.

"Although we do not expect another PS3 price cut this year, we think a price cut for the PS2 is possible," said Pachter in his latest note to investors. "Any hardware price reduction could serve as a catalyst for sales growth later in the year."

Another PS2 drop would be a strong move. There's still plenty of strong titles lined up for the system this year, and after this many years you'd think they'd be able to get it down to $100 or so.

Don't take Pachter's word as the ultimate truth. He says a lot, and some of it makes sense,  but he's proved time and time again that he's not always right. Keep in mind that he's VH1's Idiot of the Week for this very reason.

Yeah, Sony's support of the PS2 is nothing short of amazing. They seem to be keeping it alive and fun until such a time as the PS3 can drop low enough in price to become common place.

$99 would be the cream spot. I want to get a PS2 for my dad and GT4 with a wheel for his birthday, this would make it much easier.

It's like the PS2 is keeping the seat warm for the PS3.

Although I don't already own a system, I do own PlayStation 2 games. I'm just waiting to buy a PS2, and a price cut to $100 would be reason enough to finally purchase one.

if sony does this it will swing the leverage the 360 wins by their price cut right back to sony since most kids who cant really afford a next gen system will end up getting a ps2 with its large library of games with cheaper prices.

The Xbox may rank as the quickest a company has ever abandoned their old console. From one day to another, POOF! Xbox dead. Most systems gratually die, but this is ridiculous. While PS2 may end up ranking as one of the longest supported consoles in history, not counting Gameboy's original handheld of course.
