Pachter: Nintendo has not forgotten core gamers, but still is rich photo

Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter predicts that Nintendo's Q1 sales were $3.91 billion, just ahead of the second quarter financial results expected July 30th. His predictions are even higher that Nintendo's own. He says that Nintendo's "performance has been spectacular," and believes that the Wii and DS will sell even better in 2009 than they will this year. There's no stopping them!

Pachter also had a bit to say about Nintendo's lack of core game announcements at their E3 press conference this year, according to Gamasutra. He says that while "some hardcore gamers were critical of Nintendo's failure to announce new Mario and Zelda games at the show... we think that Nintendo focused upon building upon its formidable lead with the mass market, and do not consider the lack of major hard core game announcements to be an abandonment of its core."

This echoes the statements made in a recent interview with Nintendo head Satoru Iwata.

I can appreciate that Nintendo wanted to focus on what really makes them money at E3 this year, but they could of at least took five minutes to quickly mention Mario or Zelda. We're not stupid. We know they're working on new games. We just like to hear it sometimes, Nintendo.

The fuck? They outright said the Mario and Zelda teams are hard at work right now making their newest games. What if the projects are so early they can't show it, or are uncomfortable showing it right now? Quit crying, please.

Novakaine:

They could have put a quick trailer together. The whole presentation was focused on the "casual gamer". Is it wrong to want to see more than Wii Music/Wii Sports 2/Animal Crossing?

Who in their right mind would expect them to show Mario when the last one just came out in what, November? As for Zelda, I bet it'll be out in late 09, maybe a little earlier (3 years after Twilight Princess). And maybe Pikmin in the summer?

I think people were expecting a new Starfox, F-Zero, Pilotwings, Kid Icarus, or maybe a new IP. Things are eerily silent on those front. They're reassured us about Mario (duh), Zelda (duh) and Pikmin (much appreciated), but what about the other stuff.

And with that, I think I officially have nothing more to say about Nintendo's E3.

A new Zelda? A new Mario? I'd rather be mummified alive than to have to use that damn grapple hook one more time, or see the back of Mario's head for another 24-hours. I want new stuff!

(Or simply put: Waaaah!)

Wii owners that are "hardcore" gamers should be more concerned that Nintendo thinks that all you're waiting for is more Mario and Link than about anything else. Mario is for hardcore gamers? Since when? If anything, Mario is a "gateway drug" for casual gamers to get into better games, really.

Better games? Last I checked Mario is the only pure platformer left in the third dimension, though Banjo Kazooie should change that.

There was no Zelda/Mario trailer because the games are probably still in pre-production phases meaning that there's not even 1 fully complete level to show. Those games won't be out until christmas 2010 atleast.

You guys are asking for stuff like: "Why wasn't there a trailer about the new Metal Gear? We know it's in the work, SHOW IT!!!" come on guys... do you even know how development cycles work?

LOL, when I video first started I thought it was like the knew Rickroll or something. Thats a great song BTW but it has a weird ass music video. Anyway, I must admit I was pretty disappointed at Nintendo's conference this year. In fact I was so depressed that I didn't even feel like looking at the other games at e3. I was so pissed off that I almost made an angry blog post flaming Nintendo. Then I calmed down and decided not to. Rumor has it that e3 is supposed to be returning to the old format next year for at least one more time so if thats true then maybe next year will be better.

I don't get what people don't get about this. The core title that we want doesn't have to be Mario/Zelda. It just has to be a game geared towards our interests. Any game would be fine, but we aren't getting any for the next 5 months minimum. They told us we would have something "core" and then they not only showed they didn't, they showed that they didn't even have games for the rest of the year. I don't see what the average consumer has to be happy about either. And I don't want a wii-tachment that kills battery life and makes my wiimote do what it was originally supposed to do.

you know what they could have done? introduced a new channel for the wii. Showcase something new instead of Animal Crossing 3 and Wii Sports 2 (which isn't shipping this year).

Pachter can say that Nintendo didn't abandon its core, but its the other way around. The core aren't going to abandon their investments. I might, but I doubt alot of people are ready to go out and sell their wiis. They might say they will but they most likely wont.

I don't hate nintendo, but I did go from being all into their current stuff to just being indifferent. Their latest performance acted as sort of a wake-up call. Fuck it. Long live Old Nintendo. I'll being playing my NES.

Speaking of being stuck in the past: I sat through that whole music video just for the Breakfast Club clips.

If only their new Zelda and Mario games were for the SNES... now THAT would be core.

People are going to cry unless they get a new Zelda and Mario every six months. The Nintendo core is rotten, and I don't blame them for shunning them.

When has Nintendo ever made anything hardcore? All they've ever done is make Mario, Zelda etc. Blame the 3rd parties for the lack of hardcore games.
