Videogame analyst and skilled huntsman Michael Pachter has been shining his crystal balls once again and peering into the future, predicting that the recent Netflix/PS3 partnership has paved the way for the streaming service's appearance on Nintendo's Wii.
"We anticipate that a similar arrangement will be announced for the Wii in the next 12 months," declares the soothsayer. "We believe that the exclusive arrangement limits Netflix’s ability to appear on the 'dashboard' for the PS3 or the Wii, but because both devices have open architecture Internet browsers built-in, the solution proposed for the PS3 would likely not violate the terms of Microsoft’s exclusivity."
I'm sure Netflix wants to get on as many platforms as possible, and with this newfound ability to get around Microsoft's exclusivity arrangement, perhaps a Wii version of Netflix is indeed coming. That said, would you really want to use your Wii of all things to stream TV shows and movies? A fun waggle system it is, a flexible media hub it ain't.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Oh yea, he's ALSO the guy who said iPhone games are a fad but afterwards claimed that the ipod touch was a huge threat to publishers...
I want to do this guy's job. I have enough knowledge and surf the internet enough to make balls off predictions and get plenty of coverage.
What?
Anyways back to a loose form of reality (a reality where I think Patcher is right on the money), I think this easily doable and I hope Nintendo cooperates. I can already stream decently with TVersity so I can't see why this wouldn't be possible other than Nintendo being all isolationist.
Not officially, but it's not hard.
Like they have been since they've been in the industry? Nintendo has always been almost 100% proprietary and private. If Nintendo wanted a movie streaming service they would either make their own or not make one at all.
Reggie would say: "Wii users don't NEED Netflix, it's about the games" or something along the lines of that. Nintendo doesn't want a living room multimedia hub, they just want a gaming console for the whole family.
STOP KILLING MY DREAMS!!!
Just buy a 360 OR PS3 if you want Netflix. If you don't own either, you're already missing out on a lot.
All these big video streaming sites and movie streaming sites are always "NO NON-AMERICANS ALLOWED", it's frigging aggravating.
THANKS PLAYON AND MEDIAMALL!
a BLURRY picture of the Netflix logo?
I C WAT U DID THAR
hahaha can't believe no one else noticed.
also...
fuck you the wii doesn't make my games OR movies blurry.
Dude PlayOn sucks. Half yhe reason I got Netflix is because PlayOn just wasn't worth the time. And TVersity did that Plus thing which totally fucked with how I had everything set up.
The only media streaming I do anymore is the (surprisingly excellent) streaming feature on Vuze.
@jamBOT
Like everyone else said you can play DVDs on the Wii. Just not officially. The hardware is there. It's just a software issue. And what does that have to do with Netflix?
I remember making a similar claim yesterday and getting told that I was full of shit. I'm adding "Internet vidjya gamez analist" to my linkedin profile.
What does it matter where Netflix shows up?
It's $9 for streaming AND the standard DVD service. And there's already 6 sub-$200 devices on the market that already have netflix tied in along with additional streaming media features.
I think the only company our there that isn't considering adding Netflix is Blockbuster and their On Demand box. And they really ought to look into adding Netflix to that. It's damn nice and awfully convenient.
In my current setup, my Wii hangs out on the living room TV, which happens to be mad SD (like, picture tube, dude). So, having a netflix conduit right there would be pretty sweet. The Nintendo Channel has had some decent quality streaming on it recently, I could definitely see some solid, lower-than-HD streaming happening there, at least.
It's hilarious when you read that an analyst has said something that is outright, factually wrong.
The disk based solution has nothing to do with MS exclusivity deal. It is merely a way of getting the service onto PS3 quicker (November) instead of waiting to make an APP.

Seriously, stop with these posts.
