Pachter: Natal will outsell PS3 motion controller 5-to-1 photo

While Nintendo has comfortable dominated the motion-controlled-gaming space for the past few years, that all changes this Fall. Both Sony and Microsoft will be stepping into the ring, with the motion control wand and Project Natal respectively.

But which solution, if any, will consumers flock to? Analyst Michael Pachter is giving the nod to Microsoft, saying that in the first year Natal will outsell the currently-unnamed Sony motion controller 5-to-1.

"I think that the Sony motion controller will have some problems gaining traction, since it is not an 'in the box' solution," he told PS3Center, saying that would limited adoption to one or two million sold "at the outset."

"A year of so after launch, there will be 10 million [Project Natal units] out there," he predicts, "which will probably attract more third party support."

Microsoft has been pushing Natal strong since its reveal at last E3, where as Sony -- which will reveal the controller in more detail at GDC next month -- has been relatively quiet, not yet even giving it a proper name. Many third-party developers have had Natal development kits for awhile now; we've heard rumblings of some rather high profile IPs that take advantage of the camera that are already deep in development.

This question is open to those who own both an Xbox 360 and a PlayStation 3 (loyalists, please sit this one out, if you can): Which motion controller are you most interested -- Sony's or Microsoft's?

Natal to outsell PS3 Wand 5-1 - analyst [CVG]

The PS3 one is a little too much like the Wiimote. Natal allows for a different kind of motion control, at least.

I have a PS3 and 360 (Prefer my 360, for the record) and I'm more interested in Natal simply for the fact that it's not going to completely replace the controller. Imagine playing a game with a controller and adding the head tracking/voice control/recognition Natal brings along with it. That seems way more practical than playing an entire game via Natal or the Sony Wand---I just don't see them replacing controllers altogether. I look forward to both of them, but color me more interested in Natal.

Id rather not have either one to be quite honest. Each one makes you look like a huge toolbox in completely different ways. If I had to choose one Id say the Sony one is the lesser of two evils as it does not require me to stand up while playing games

I don't care about any of them, but for the sake of intrigue, Microsoft's. Only because it's not a traditional "controller".

I won't touch either of them. Motion control is not my idea of fun.

I think the PS3 Arc has more practical applications for gaming than Natal. Natal's great tech but I can't see how it can replace a controller and it can't really enhance the controls the same way the Arc or even Wii remote can.

To be honest though I haven't seen enough to consider purchasing either of them yet.

Too be honest, I think they'll both have the problem the Wii does. Neither one will be bad but only the first party stuff will be good.

Probably none, they both look pretty retarded. The natal even more so because well, I like holding something tangible to give me feedback but you know, who knows, maybe I'll eat my words and one of these things will be awesome...

I can see that. Consumers will probably flock to the more "gimmicky" of the two, but hopefully the appeal will wear off for most people, much like Wii Motion Control did for me. I like the Sony motion controller because it's more practical and it's 1:1. I assume it will be much more stable and easy to use than a Wiimote. Wiimotes can be a hassle. Natal seems cool, but it's just a brand new gimmicky fad that I'm not very interested in it, but most people will be... just like everyone went gaga for the Wii. Gimmicks. Geez. Can't we just play games with fucking controllers? lol

Neither. I'm too fat/lazy for Natal, and I already have a Wii.

Frankly, I'm more interested in Sony's concept than Microsoft's. Natal just seems a bit too far ahead of its time, the kind of thing that needs another five to ten years of tweaking and testing before the discussion of release even comes up. That's not to say that Sony's concept is actually better, I just find it easier to identify with that kind of product. I prefer something that's more tangible.

And I wouldn't expect Natal to outsell Sony's motion controller by 5-to-1. I do expect Natal to do better, but that prediction has a lot more to do with Microsoft's market penetration with the Xbox 360.

I wont buy either, but due to support from developers a new experince and mini games galore Natal will outsell the dildos.

Natal will be great for workout games, fighting games and sports games something the wii crowd love, and since gamers like you and I hate motion controls the fact that sonys vibrators work better for our games does not matter.

so yeah I agree with him.

the arc doesn't even need competition for sony to just forget about it after 2 "games" by which i mean tech demos. the most the eyetoy gets exposed to nowadays are the shoeboxes in closets.

I think Microsoft will market Natal better than Sony will for Arc. But I think many gamers appreciate a physical controller to grab on to, it may be a way to attract Wii owners as well.
All in all it will come down to the software support, which it's still everyone's game.

Yep, I went there.

In a more related note.. I just need to know more about the games coming out for them before making a real decision. I do own both consoles, so the one that can catch me with a "must have" game will probably be the winner in my household.

So...five Natal controllers will be sold, and one Arc? Sounds about right.

I'm not trying to be a pessimist, but both those things scream "too little, too late". Maybe (hopefully) I'll be surprised.

Owner of both systems and a PC. Neither regardless of what games requires them. I do not want a Wii, if I wanted a Wii I would have bought one instead of a 360 and a PS3. It is nothing more than 1) a way to get Wii shovel ware buyers to their console and 2) a way to try and find more ways to get us to buy useless peripherals kind of like the Wii.

Since I already have a Wiimote I guess I'm more interested in Natal... Though really, for me, it's what they end up doing with it. If it's another avalanche of carnival games then I'll just go ahead and pass on both.

Eh. I'm not excited for either of them. I'm not a huge fan of standing up and dancing around while playing games. At least with the wiimote (and I'm suspecting the PS3 wand) all I had to do was flick my wrist in a particular direction to get the feedback I wanted.

i think speech reconizer would be very intresting in games for xbox, but honestly, like a lot of people, im not really into jumping around to play a game either. i do hope alot of developers will make use of the speech and face reconizer.

If we see some RTSs that use the Sony Motion Controller like a mouse (like we saw when it was first revealed), then I'll be all over it. Other than that, I couldn't care less for either of them.

And yeah, I'd say Natal is definitely going to outsell Sony's deal. It seems to be aimed at mass appeal far more than Sony's deal.

Eh . . . I'm not up for both of them. I haven't been following Natal or Arc[?], so I don't know the details, but I'd rather just stick to normal controllers. I'm not saying that I will never get them . . . just, at the moment, I'm not enthusiastic about them at the moment.

Both are just going to bring on gobs of shovelware, so who cares? There'll be one or two "hardcore" games that tie in with these, but overall a huge waste of money.
I am curious to see the price points on both of these, though. If Natal is a lot cheaper, I think it'll sell better. That being said, Arc looks like it would be more practical in hardcore type games, so if I ever did cave and pick up one, it would be that one.
Then again, that would require owning a PS3, but I should be getting one before the end of the month (woo!).

I also have a feeling that Microsoft is more open to spending 5:1 more money marketing Natal.

For the core gamer it's going to be about the software. Where's the compelling game for either?

Xzyliac's first post was correct. And, if motion control is inevitable, I would imagine buttons are needed for any serious gameplay. Sony wins, but motion control still faulters in my mind.

I'm going to wait and see what each offers before buying either one, but as of now, yeah, I'm more interested in Natal because it's a bit different. The Arc/Wand is literally a wiimote; there's no mystery about it. Natal on the otherhand has more potential, but so far I haven't seen anything that makes me want it.
