Pachter: Move sold 'well below expectations' photo

According to industry analyst and donkey midwife Michael Pachter, Sony's PlayStation Move has sold well below expectations. He reports that the black waggle stick has sold a mere 400,000 units since launch. Compare that to Kinect selling over a million within ten days, and a winner seems clear.

"Move sold well below expectations in its first month" says the midnight lover. "... Interestingly, the higher priced Kinect controller appears to have overtaken the Move controller in the sales race."

I hope Sony isn't surprised. Given the fact that the Move looks like a glow-in-the-dark Wiimote knock-off to your average consumer, and considering Sony's lackluster marketing campaign and dearth of games worth playing for the bloody thing, it shouldn't shock anybody to see that Move has really only sold to those who owned a PS3 in the first place.

Move is a great piece of tech, but I see it going the way of the PSPgo. Overpriced, undersupported, and eventually thrown on the scrap heap. I hope I'm wrong, but it doesn't look good.

Didn't someone release sales numbers a few weeks ago that were around 1.8million? And I thought Sony commented on how it sold above expectations... Im confused.

I'd pick up a Move if there were any games that looked better than tech demos. Until then, I'm looking at it like it's a 32X

stupid ripoff control fails. It's a stupid, expensive wii ripoff, and the only decent games for it are the already beaten games that got a "move update." of course kinect wins

I loved the move, on the first day of getting it... Now it sits-I repurchased Heavy Rain just for it like a sucker... I hope it does better-really don't want my purchase to go to waste like the power glove-honesly my friend bought one and i remember the look of disappointment soon followed. :) My wife has made fun of me for getting the Move even...and she is no gamer..@netnavi-i see ads all the time/daily for it, but they aren't very good-very bad... Crossing fingers-hope change is a comming

At least they probably made a profit on Move or less of a loss, compared to the ENORMOUS cost of the marketing campaign of Kinect.

32x has DOOM, Move has MAG.

Ergo, 32x > Move

I'm not the biggest Sony fan, but isn't that a bit of a unfair comparison? You're quoting worldwide sales of over a million units for Kinect, but only giving US NPD numbers for MOVE. So of course its going to look like ones a failure over another, when you put it like that.

If you did the same numbers for MOVE being worldwide and only used US NPD numbers for Kinect next month, it would probably look even worst for Kinect. I'm sure MOVE didn't sell great in its first month, but its still not fair to say that its not selling as well as Kinects over a million units worldwide either!

I thought the previous move figures turned out to be the number shipped not sold? I assume Butt Pachter gets the actual numbers from NPD so now i am curious what kinect did in the US alone during a similar timeframe. I was in two different stores at launch and saw two middle aged couples buying them for their kids. I have a feeling that for at least this holiday it will be big. now whether that can translate to longterm sales....

I bought a 32x for Doom too. Multiple 32X owners in one thread? /apocalypse

Long story short, MS stood behind there product...to the tune of half a billion dollars. Sony squeaked out Move like it was an experiment, not to dissimilar from the PSPGo. It's all but over for Move, but Kinects legs at retail after the holiday season remain to be seen.

thats extremely sad considering Move is a better motion control system over kinect. Sine Kinect is lacking actual tactile input, but move is really expensive if you want the second wand to use it as it were meant.

Kinect on the other hand is worthless imo especially how and where I play my games.

I take no pleasure in this but it is very interesting how 2 months ago everybody declared sonys move as the "winner" and kinect as the biggest fail since the power glove.

2 months later and the move has poor sales and kinect is flying off the shelves. Sure, it has its problems and a not-so-great launch line up but I think the lesson I clear.

I bought two Move controllers and enjoy it. I also own Kinect and enjoy that.

But the problem with Move is that it's too much like the Wii. Not ripping on it, just saying it how it is. People see it and they think "Wii". What is the reason someone would buy this if they already have a Wii? That's the question Sony needs to answer.

Wait, didn't Sony even say that they didn't expect the Playstation Move to sell that well at launch? That it would sales would excel in the long-run, not the short-run?

http://www.destructoid.com/sony-playstation-move-is-not-a-pre-order-product--183464.phtml

That this is exactly the reason why they weren't matching Microsoft's advertising campaign for the Kinect?

http://www.destructoid.com/sony-would-never-outspend-microsoft-s-kinect-marketing-183584.phtml

And now they're complaining that the Move's sales are "below expectations"? What, do they have short-term memory loss? Besides, didn't they say they sold over 1 million in North America alone?

Its easy to see which is going to appeal to a more broad market take your average 50-60 year old and put them infront of the Move and Kinect and see which one they are still playing after 30 minutes.

Kinect sold this money thanks to pure hype, Oprah, Ellen, Burger King, and endless Microsoft products. Its reminds me of Rock Band, novelty that everyone thinks is so great, then it just dies when it just releases the same updated games. Dance Central 2, anyone ? Why I believe the Move tries to incorporate it into current and new releases, while maintaining a seperate catalog specific titles. Is the move like the Wii controller ? Well duh...of course. But the move packaged with the PS3 is light years ahead of the Wii.

I see more of a future with move than I do kinect. I was really excited about kinect when I first saw the tech specs but then it was gutted. It really could have been a much better product with a real future.

I can't imagine there will be any deeper/complex kinect titles to come out in short or long run that won't seriously be lacking in gameplay.

The tech just isn't there to do a real game , I heard talk about a gears of war title for kinect and I can't help but laugh. You can't transfer those controls to body actions without loosing some or making it nearly impossible to play.

It's a showy and fun gimmick with no future beyond ( boxing, pets, dancing, and party games ) I'd love to be wrong here but for me there's no point because aside from novelty I play real games with real controllers.

The problem is, as pointed out. Move is still outselling Kinect. Kinect is selling faster, and will eventually over take Move, I have no doubt about that. This article is just flat out flame bait for trolls.

Destructoid posted an article saying move sold over 1 million in North America.

http://www.destructoid.com/ps-move-sells-over-a-million-in-north-america-186308.phtml

They also had an article claiming move sold over 1.5 mil in Europe.

http://www.destructoid.com/playstation-move-about-1-5-million-units-sold-in-europe-186168.phtml

No one has mentioned Japanese numbers as far as I know, all I want as a reader is some consistency between Destructoid's articles.

What can you do with the move (if hacked) that you couldn't already do with a wii mote?

Gee, now I can do PowerPoint in 1:1 movement farglebargle.

Just look at what people are doing once the kinect tech is open up. Sure it's rough right now but with time comes refinement.

And I'm pleased you play real games with real controllers, I'm over here playing all kinds of games with all kinds of controllers.

For me, personally, I feel like the reason I was drawn to the Move was BECAUSE of how similar to the Wii it is. It's a blatant ripoff, yeah, but it's a ripoff that works a ton better. We just need to wait for games that are worth it.

It's perfectly fair. Hell, even if you accept the 1.5 million worldwide for Move, it's a pathetic loss on Sony's part. They've had sixty-one days to move those units. Microsoft has had ten days and looks to surpass Move before it hits twenty.

@Nyktharas

Check the articles. The 1.5 Million in Europe was reported by the head of Sony's division there. The 1 Million in America was reported by the head of Sony's division for North America. It's not a surprise to learn that the numbers these men have been quoting to us are gathered directly from their cornholes.
