Pachter: Incorrect once a week, only fanboys care photo

Industry analyst Michael "shiny testes" Pachter is a little bit tired of gamers arguing over his words. While he admits he doesn't seem to go a week without being incorrect, he defends himself in Game Informer by saying that his words are for investors, not us, and that only fanboys care about what he says.

"My job is not to talk to journalists, it's to talk to investors," says Pachter, while talking to journalists. "If I say that a Wii HD is coming, it outrages fanboys who think that Nintendo always knows better, but it doesn't particularly outrage investors.

"There are a handful of readers who make personal attacks, and I would tell them that I have no stake in the outcome of anything I talk about (I don't even invest in the companies I cover), and most of what I say is just opinion. I don't say things because I hope they come true; I say them because I think they will come true.

"I don't think I've gone a week without having an incorrect prediction. Nobody cares if I'm right, except fanboys. My clients are merely looking for a benchmark in front of numbers so that they can assess whether the stocks of the companies I cover will go higher or lower."

Pachter's right, of course. He doesn't speak to gamers. That's why he doesn't have a show on GameTrailers or write a regular column for Industry Gamers. Oh wait ...

Because lying to investors about the future of companies is SO much better than lying to gamers about the future of companies. Wait....

Seriously, is there a positive way to interpret these comments?
1. He denigrates gamers.
2. He has no interest or real knowledge about the industry.
3. He makes stuff up for investors

Ugh, this is the defiantly the sort of person the industry doesn't need - he can't predict trends, is a hypocrite [as you pointed out Jim] and clearly doesn't really care about games...

If i'm not supposed to listen or react to what he says, why does he keep trying to tell me his opinion by doing videos/writing columns FOR GAMERS?

Also, only fanboys argue about the shit he says? Saying that COD should also have a subscription, games/consoles should cost more, this guy basically just tells industry people, "GO AHEAD, CHARGE MORE! THEY FUCKING LOVE IT" which, we REALLY DON'T.

Yep, i'm a fanboy for not wanting to pay more money for videogames because michael pachter says so. Thanks chief, gave me a whole new reason do dislike your ignorant ass.

Pachter is an ass-hat that will soon be irrelevant in the gaming industry. I don't say things because I hope they come true; I say them because I think they will come true.

He's contradicting himself if only gamers cared about his opinions then there'd be no market for his services among investors. Then again I often wonder why these blogs waste the digital ink on his contrived nonsense.

My favorite is his belief that Nintendo scouts for already profitable industries before getting involved. The entirely motion controlled console and a two screened handheld were being produced way before Nintendo got in on it, right? And they were all very profitable, right?

This is the first pachter post I like. Not because I like the guy but because he openly destroys his own credibility to the point that he may lose his career. If I was an investor and I read this, it would make me think twice about listening to him.

He's just pissed because gamers can see how horrible his "predictions" are. Investors tolerate his presence because they don't know any better. All that he does is tell them what they want to hear, not what he thinks will happen.

An easy way to tell what Pachter is going to predict is to just think to yourself, what is the most pro-corporate, pro-profit thing that could happen? That's his prediction. That's really all he does.

People hate him specifically because he doesn't predict what is going to happen. People hate him because he advocates for horrible, pro-corporate positions with little to no evidence.

Anyone else who made repeated mistakes in their job would get the sack. Pachter who repeatedly makes baseless predictions that don't come to pass still has a successful job as an analyst. I mean, really? If I was paid to be wrong all the time, I'd be laughing my arse off too.

I knew from the moment I read one of his predictions for the first time this guy was an idiot. He either states something that will never happen or he states the obvious. Saying shit like "I think (insert any CoD game here) will be the best seller this year is not a prediction. At least not an prediction you should get paid to predict. Even the Wii 2 shit is stupid. Of course nintendo will make another system but I doubt they will be so lazy to name it Wii 2.

I think he's hoping to distract people by saying the most insane, contradictory things he can think of.

Whats the big deal? Theres a lot of hate from this website on him. Admittedly, I don't really care what he says, but I saw the dude on Screensavers back in the day, and he seemed like an okay guy to me, during their round-table discussions, nothing like the prick you guys makes him out to be. He seemed generally interested in games, and didn't come off like arrogant jerk when he talked. Sounded kind spoken, but like an analyst. I thought he seemed nice, while destructoid and most readers him make him out to be a douche. I must have missed something about him all these years. Maybe he changed. *shrug*

If he were a true "investing strategist" shouldn't he be paying attention to the gamers who have the most emotionally vested interest? I know, as an investor, that the opinions of those most closely related to what I'm giving my money for is what matters. Sooner or later one of the sons or daughters of his investors is going to let their parent know he's off his rocker, and then his ass will be out of a job. I just bought a bunch of stock in Activision (pursuant to their acquire of Bungie) and one of the main reasons I'm happy about that investment is my knowledge as a gamer of what Bungie can produce. He's going to go down in flames, trust me. And it won't be us, as gamers, that do it.

As Jim pointed out the hypocrisy in his, "I don't talk to gamers", why did he also go out of his way to start talking to gamers on NeoGaf's forums?

He may "not have anything invested" in other companies, but Wedbush Morgan might. Pachter's statements are wrong 80 percent of the time I'd say, but there's a reason probably for that, he's trying to sway the investors into the ideas he has promoted in the past, possibly to benefit those companies (or rival companies).

Pachter doesn't bother me, but the attention the gaming media gives him does.
