Pachter: Games industry will rebound thanks to new stuff photo

Analysts stating the obvious; it's almost an art form. The latest masterpiece to be created comes from the master of the craft Michael Pachter and his Wedbush Morgan pal Edward Woo. They say, and I hope you're sitting down, that all the new technology coming out of E3 is going to "have great potential to reinvigorate the video game market." I told you to sit down. Obvious statements that well crafted only come along once in a blue moon.

While pontificating on the blatantly obvious Pachter and Woo talked a bit about other E3 happenings as well. As you probably guessed, they think the 3DS will sell like gangbusters despite their predicted price tag of upwards of $250. On the other hand they believe the pricing on the Natal and Move is going to be crucial for making them sell. "We are not yet convinced that the hard core Xbox 360 user, who typically 'controls' decisions about his/her console, will find the game lineup for Kinect sufficiently compelling to purchase the device at a price point over $100, and think that pricing at the higher point would severely limit sales," they (I guess they operate in some sort of Borg-like hive speak) said.

As for Move, they're looking at the price points and thinking that it might be a bit high. Pachter and Woo point out that for people to fully access Move's library they're going to need to procure a lot of crap (one PlayStation Eye, two Move controllers and at least one Navigation controller) resulting in a price tag of around $180. They think this might scare casual gamers off and turn away even the hardcore.

In their only non-obvious statement Pachter and Woo said that they believe Dance Central to be Kinect's killer app. I can see that.

I think the 3DS will be $219.99. That being said, I'd pay no more than $250.00.

Also, fuck Pachter.

Getting paid to state the obvious. How can I get a cut in this?

Also, no shit , bro. (to Pachter)

I need a change of career because I too could state the bleeding obvious and I firmly imagine Pachter and co are earning a damn site more than me.

It's nice that special people can earn a formidable wage just by saying the sky is blue, hollywood does movies and new games tech will earn money, I suppose it's better than standing just outside the village and drooling at passers by.

So, all you have to do to be a game industry analyst is state the obvious, freak out when you're wrong about predictions, claim sales numbers are downright wrong, and have generally no idea what you're talking about?

Shit, sign me up. I could make a killing in no time...

PACHTER SAID SOMETHING INTELLIGENT!! I'm so happy for him.

I agree that the 3DS shouldn't go over $250 - especially with 360's and PS3's costing just a little more (or, less for the moment if you're willing to go old school).

I'm also a bit skeptical about the initial investment cost of the Move. I'm not really sure how that's supposed to work out. Will people need to buy two of everything? However, pricing Move games at $39.99 is tons better than the price of Kinect games, which look to be $59.99. I mean, sixty bucks for Kinect Joy Ride? Really?

@TheGameroomBlitz

Cause hes privy to financial information that isn't released to the public?

You hire, pay and listen to guys like Pachter can ONE correct decision could net you MILLIONS. Imagine if Pachter said "the Wii will absolutely crush the PS3 and 360" in 2006 and you didn't believe him. You'd feel pretty stupid seeing as Nintendo's stock reached a market high of 75 points since the Wii's launch.

Personally, I'd be surprised if Nintendo launched 3DS for more than $250, and even that seems like a pretty high estimate. They talked a lot in their press conference about it being a "mass market device", and Nintendo has consistently shown that they're better in touch than anyone with what the mass market will be willing to spend.

Ah the analyst that gets kickbacks from companies simply by running his mouth.

Guys!

Pachter is NOT stating the obvious, because whatever he says ends up being wrong. So expect gaming to go downhill people!

He's a nice guy and all, but you know there's something wrong when the guy can't seem to get things straight with the ONE company that investers want to invest on. Preferences aside, Nintendo makes BIG, BIG, BIIIIG bucks, mostly because they build at a low cost and sell at a low price.

Which makes that G4TV in which he said 3DS could go for 300 bucks living proof that he is NOT acquainted with market functioning. NIntendo's a hardware developer that depends on public acception for long term and CONSTANT public approval, pretty much depending on mouth to mouth marketing.

You can't go the overexpensive route with this strategy, specially when it's not state-of-the-art specs-wise and when the main catch requires physical access to the hardware.

I have no doubts this guy gets kickbacks from other companies to say negative/positive things about business decisions or companies, or even games themselves. How else can one guy be so consistently wrong?

Meh. I don't hate Patcher, I just find his predictions to be kind of predictable sometimes. Not always but sometimes.

Patcher's an alright guy. All analyst say as many obvious things as not. They get paid to speak up no matter what.

I'm not sure Captain Obvious really applies here.

Sure the 3DS has that potential (5 hour lines) but I am not even slightly convinced Kinect or Move can do that job. Neither is he, judging on his price point comments.

He should have said "The 3DS has great potential to reinvigorate the video game market", seeing as that's what he meant.

In adition to trouble with people that are sitting, I just found out Kinect can only handle two people at a time.

I dare Patcher to promote Kinect.

You know, my fat PS3 cost $250 one and a half years ago. Who are these spoiled children of wealthy retards buying handhelds, the 3DS included? They need to be stuffed in burlap bags, thrown into a coal mine and bludgeoned with shovels.

Their parents should be scattered like carrion in the desert wastes. Their misery is a virtue.

But the analyst's role is to take your watch and tell the time for you.
If the clock is delayed seven hours he's not going to fix it even if it is showing 8:00 PM and the sun is still shining. So they (analysts) navigate through the obvious and totally wrong. But if businesses need someone to do it for them so, smart one who makes it.

I mean, the guy has said he only drives Porsche. How many here that criticized him can buy a Porsche?

I would say that the industry is potentially facing its worst years yet. I don't think that the wii audience will continue to buy new hardware, and when that well dries up... imagine the amount of R/D spent on a market which doesn't really exist and cutting out the market that no longer has anything interesting made for them.

I say it is going to turn really dry in about 5 years. Perhaps sooner.
