Michael Pachter looks at the numbers, throws toad legs into a cauldron, and calls it like he sees it. Hey, that's what you do when you're a well-paid analyst for Wedbush Morgan, right?
Mr. Pacther's talking again, this time releasing a report that details his expectations for the videogame industry through the month of December. His first conclusion is that console sales will continue to be strong through the holidays, saying that sales for Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo have all been extremely strong. Based on figures released by the big three, Pachter makes solid number predictions.
He continued, "These figures imply that Microsoft will sell 1.5 million Xbox 360s in December in the U.S., that Nintendo will sell 1.7 million Wiis, and that Sony will sell around 800,000 PS3s."
And despite Nintendo's strong sales, he expects that the demand will continue to "outstrip supply well into next year." It also looks like a lot of kids who get gift cards in place of the console might get a lesson in patience -- he approximates April, four months into the new year, as when we might start seeing some more Wiis on the shelves.

Just how many children are there in the United States? It's like they're selling one Wii per child or something.
It's harsh I tell ya, been keeping my eye out for a wii for my kid sister, and since I'm a cheap bastard that won't pay 400+ for a 250 system she's just gonna have to wait it out. I got her a DS instead.
I'm waiting for the Wii demand to go down a little so I can buy a crap load of Wii stuff for less.
60 dollars for a nunchuck and a wiimote?
INSANE!
I just want a damn wii, I thought waiting a few months when it first came out would be enough, now we are reaching a year.
Ugh, I shouldn't have sold mine. Damn you, IRS.
SAVE ME RON PAUL
The fact that the Wii is still in demand astounds me. If this continues to next Christmas, I'm ready to call shenanigans.
April is, ah, 4 months in. >.>
Oh yeah, I've had that christmas where you open the box to find a Receipt from amazon.com with a note saying, "sorry we are out of stock at this time, but you will receive your gift as soon as possible"

oh shit...uhh my bad please don't ban me?
MATH FTW! :O
@niakori:
You did the brotherly thing. There's more than enough good stuff out for DS right now to help her wait it out.
I worked for years in the production department of one of the largest publishers in the world and there is no way that this scenario hasnt been created by Nintendo. I called bullshit on this a long time ago.
This has been going on for a year.
now is the time for me to unload my wii!
like new!
original packaging!
who wants it???
@ Rubadub
And what exactly would Nintendo gain by limiting supply?
To limit supply would in effect do the opposite of what Nintendo wants, the reason to limit supply is to drive up demand. But the Wii has plenty of demand, and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere with over 10 million sold in a year and sales are still strong. They are making profit on each console sale, and it's still at full price. Are they waiting until a price drop to release these hidden hordes of consoles?
How about the fact that this is the first gaming system that an everyday house mom can actually buy and play? Hence opening the market to millions upon millions of new customers. THAT is what is crating this crazy demand, not an artificially limited limited supply.
In before hexfix complaints about low Sony numbers
also, this seems about right to me
@rubadub
I have to agree you with man. This limitimg-the-supply-so-everybody-is-still-getting-hard trying to get one has got to stop. Nintendo if you can't manufacture enough units you need to fire some people. But that isn't the problem..they're full of shit. They can afford to go down this avenue with the lead they have.
If you want a Wii you have to do some underhanded things to get one, good example to follow...note this is not me because I already own a Wii, I bought one earlier this year.
A friend of mine has a daughter that wants one. He saw Best Buy's recent add for Sunday advertising the Wii. So he decided to go to the store early and wait. He got there at 6am and waited in line with many others. They handed out tickets and of course he did not get there early enough to get one. So he was talking to someone in line and her husband was at a different store and if he got one she would give him her ticket. So he decided to hang around and see, despite the employees advising him to not wait. He went in the store and the Wiis were just sitting out in the open on a pallet away from where the people that had tickets went to claim them. So he, and myself, being a former employee knew that you could go to a different department like appliances that has an actual register and ring stuff out back there. We did this to avoid the lines up front during the holidays. So he grabs one, makes a discrete walk to appliances helped by some of his friends that still work there, purchases it without a ticket, gets a non see through bag and runs out of there with it. Underhanded I know, most likely led to a poor customer with a ticket that didn't get one and most likely threw a fit because of it, but he has one.
Shame on Nintendo for this. As others have said this is DELIBERATE, they had a whole year to ramp up production. I know demand for the Wii is astronomical but I still believe that this is their doing.
@Barcode: Um, $40 for a Wiimote and $20 for the nunchuk attachment is the regular price of each of those things. So that’s what you’ll be paying even when Wiis become readily available. Sorry to break it to you.
Its amazing how far the Hype is taking the Wii
