Industry analyst Michael "Spider Pants" Pachter has gone out on a limb to suggest that the 3DS will win the next iteration of the handheld console war, destined as it is to outsell Sony's yet-to-be-announced PlayStation Portable successor.
"I think that the 3DS will outsell the PSP2, because the 3DS is new and different, while the PSP2 is likely going to be a souped up version of the old PSP," says the greasy lover. "Thus, I think that 3DS will have greater success in capturing the consumer's imagination.
"I think this is Kinect vs. Move all over again. Kinect is outselling Move because Kinect is new and different, while Move is very similar to the Wii."
Sounds about right, really. The PSP2 will likely be the PSP, but moreso, whereas the 3DS will get mainstream attention with its gimmickry. Not to mention, Nintendo has evidenced that it understands handheld gaming better than Sony ever will.
The 3DS will launch on March 27 and retail for $249.99.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
And here I was thinking it was because of Kinect's $500 million advertising campaign.
Nintendo has ruled this space since the Gameboy. Only thing they need to worry about are devices from Apple. I'm eager to see 3DS Virtual Gameboy pricing to see if they use that to agressively counter the flood of vastly cheaper App store products.
I like what I hear about the PSP2 but I need to see it, plus being the 1st to launch something new helps snatch up marketshare as people don't like waiting.
i predict that psp2 will have more console like games and much better graphics than the 3DS
Shit.
Sherlock.
But quality and awesomeness are not measured by mass appeal.
DUH
Shouldn't you I dunno see the device before you make such assumption, that old look before you leap moral comes to mind.
The 3DS releases in spring and early adopters all run over themselves to get it. As they're seen with their hip new handhelds all the other kiddies and their mums want one as well (helps that 3D is such a big fad right now). So sales jump and float nicely for a few months. Then the holiday season rolls around and since everyone already has the 3DS on the brain that's where all their focus is. Then Nintendo starts rolling out some big name titles for the holiday season. Meanwhile, the PSP 2 launches during the holiday season while everyone is trying to get their dirty hands on a 3DS.
Who do you think wins that fight? Hardware has nothing to do with anything in this case. I'd call Nintendo purely based on brilliant timing.
That is of course assuming the PSP 2 releases this holiday season. Any later is suicide and any sooner may be too soon. Holiday season seems like the only time Sony might have a fighting chance.
I understand what you're saying, but come on, do you really think he's wrong? I mean, I haven't seen an iPhone 5 yet and I can already tell you it's going to sell a at least bajillion and one units. Some things are just understood.
I hope you're talking about the games, because Nintendo Hardware has always been classically solid.
However, even though I can't say the original DS had enough "deep" games, I believe that will change with the 3DS. There will be many many gimmicky titles, for sure, but I think there will be alot of serious games as well.
I will do his job for 3/4 of the pay. I'm also not old as balls.
Let me know.
It's mostly an upgraded one with 3D possibility. Console games already have that ability. How is that new?
At least the PSP2 doesn't pretend to be something completely different when it's mostly the same thing with upgraded graphics.
How is that new? Please tell you are not serious.
Please give me a list of all handhelds and consoles that currently deliver glasses free 3D viewing, on top of the existing potential of a better DS?
If it has the ability to play PS2 games then it'd be my favorite handheld ever.
Nintendo doesn't win because the hardware is solid (it's not: see DS Lite hinge cracks, yellow DS Lite Screens (later models)), it wins because of solid software.
It also tends to be the lesser powerful system. Power wise, the DS is pretty weak; of course, that's probably one of the sources of the battery life over the PSP.
QFT
When I see a good PSP game, I always wish it was on the PS3. The DS has been much more successful at filling my need for actually portable gaming, and that will most likely continue with the 3DS.
Your logic makes zero sense...Animal Crossing DS, Super Mario Bros. DS, Pokemon DS, Nintendogs, and Professor Layton could be all played on the Wii...
