Not content to claim that online multiplayer is going subscription-based, analyst Michael Pachter has continued to predict a future filled with empty wallets by claiming that the highly anticipated 3DS will lead to more expensive titles than we're used to seeing on a Nintendo handheld.
"We view the 3DS as a revolutionary device, and expect its launch to spur hardware and software sales," claims the Jungle VIP. "Due to the unique 3DS experience previewed by Nintendo at E3 this year, we believe Nintendo will be able to sell millions of units even at a price of upwards of $250.
"From a software perspective, we believe Nintendo will be able to increase DS software prices, from a blended average of around $25 today to over $29 next year."
Pachter's speculation is pretty reasonable to assume, actually, given the significant upgrade that 3DS games are going to receive compared to regular DS titles. Frankly, some of the games already look worth that minor rise in price.
How much will you be willing to spend on 3DS games?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I would pay 200 dollars for the Ocarina Of Time remake if I had to, though.
I'd be willing to pay near 40 or so. I don't own a DS, but I think they're around 30 right?
Most games averate around $30.. but there are some games that start at $40.
$40 Dollars.
Ps2 looked better than Ps1, Ps3 looked better than Ps2. If we raised the price every time we'd be paying $70 dollars for games instead of $60 (which is also ridiculous).
If the 3DS raises game prices my interest in the console goes down to 0. I don't want to support this industry increasing the price of everything.
3D is supposed to be a neat feature, not an incentive to inflate the price. I doubt they'll be more expensive, but I'll simply be waiting longer for the prices to drop if that's the case. :)
Still, I can't wait to try out the 3DS for myself. :D
Well, I'll just stick to what I do nowadays and always wait for a price drop before purchasing. That magic sub-£20 sticker I find so alluring often happens shockingly quick with Nintendo games too, so it shouldn't be a problem.
I own more 360 games because they drop in price. 3DS games will more than likely never be discounted, and I hate that idea.
Your ignorance is amusing. Last I checked Wii games cost 10 dollars less than 360 or PS3 games and DS games are normally 5 to 10 bucks cheaper than PSP. As far as the games going down in price, that's the retailer's decision not Nintendo's, and if you follow the market on games at all you'd realize the reason Nintendo's 1st part games don't drop like most others is because they sell very well. When the game is stockpiled and no one's buying it you drop prices. If they are obviously selling millions of Mario Galaxy 2's, don't expect the price to drop until no one is willing to buy it anymore. Simple economics but judging by your grammar you probably haven't passed your Econ class.
Like Jim said, he's probably right. I could see the system being in the 200 to 250 dollar range and I could see a few games even costing 50 bucks, although I expect the majority to be 40 or less.
Still, who wouldn't pay 50 bucks for MGS3 in 3D on the go?
It's not out of reach for anybody who wants to give it a whirl.
Chrono Trigger? 40 bucks.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story? Two twenties.
Scribblenauts? A Grant minus Hamilton and a little Abraham.
If the games totally blow me away and are similar enough to console quality I would spend $50.
On another note, can we stop posting Pachter's all-too-frequent video game speculations? Seriously, GT gave him his own web show? Pachter does not deserve to be on the same level as HAWP. Period. Another period.
