Pachter: 3DS games will be more expensive photo

Not content to claim that online multiplayer is going subscription-based, analyst Michael Pachter has continued to predict a future filled with empty wallets by claiming that the highly anticipated 3DS will lead to more expensive titles than we're used to seeing on a Nintendo handheld.

"We view the 3DS as a revolutionary device, and expect its launch to spur hardware and software sales," claims the Jungle VIP. "Due to the unique 3DS experience previewed by Nintendo at E3 this year, we believe Nintendo will be able to sell millions of units even at a price of upwards of $250.

"From a software perspective, we believe Nintendo will be able to increase DS software prices, from a blended average of around $25 today to over $29 next year."

Pachter's speculation is pretty reasonable to assume, actually, given the significant upgrade that 3DS games are going to receive compared to regular DS titles. Frankly, some of the games already look worth that minor rise in price.

How much will you be willing to spend on 3DS games?

Since I actually intend to buy the games this time (I admit the only "game" I have for the DS is a 4GB R4), I'm willing to pay up to 40 dollars for each game. A little less than the Wii games cost, but still reasonable.

I would pay 200 dollars for the Ocarina Of Time remake if I had to, though.

This Pachter fellow seems to be getting paid (presumably a lot) for stating the obvious.

Why does Dtoid continue to publish the bullshit that Pachter says? Whether he's right or not, he always comes out sounding like some smug asshole and it's annoying that legitimate video game stories/articles are pushed aside the more Pachter says random shit and gets paid for it.

@ Aaron- I think THIS time is valid, since it will spark not so one sided discussion.

I'd be willing to pay near 40 or so. I don't own a DS, but I think they're around 30 right?

@GoodGuyA,

Most games averate around $30.. but there are some games that start at $40.

"How much will you be willing to spend on 3DS games?"

$40 Dollars.

Ps2 looked better than Ps1, Ps3 looked better than Ps2. If we raised the price every time we'd be paying $70 dollars for games instead of $60 (which is also ridiculous).

If the 3DS raises game prices my interest in the console goes down to 0. I don't want to support this industry increasing the price of everything.

40 max.

3D is supposed to be a neat feature, not an incentive to inflate the price. I doubt they'll be more expensive, but I'll simply be waiting longer for the prices to drop if that's the case. :)

Still, I can't wait to try out the 3DS for myself. :D

Pachter has a degree in law, political science, and a master of laws in taxation. His monthly predictions are almost always wrong. What part of this qualifies a news story every time he opens his mouth?

As long as the prices aren't a match for Wii games, I'll be content. And since the Wii's more expensive games are $50, even that is not too high.

There are 3D versions of games out now that aren't priced any differently from their non-3D counterpart. So I'm thinking we're looking at 40-45 bucks per game based on the hardware increase and not the 3D.

If portable games really cost that much to develop and publish then that's what they're going to have to charge. It seems like game prices have been way too static over the last twenty years anyway. Problems is I simply don't think the portable experience is worth anything like $25-$40 a game.

DS games were technically more advanced than GBA games, yet they still cost the same price. Unless Nintendo want to slap on the £2 extra because its in 3D, that cinemas all over the UK are currently doing.

Well, I'll just stick to what I do nowadays and always wait for a price drop before purchasing. That magic sub-£20 sticker I find so alluring often happens shockingly quick with Nintendo games too, so it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm guessing that, in the US at least, we'll see a $5 jump in the cost of new games. That means most publishers, Nintendo included, will charge $35. Then there will be Square-Enix, who will charge $40 as per their usual $5 premium.

That's not good. Nintendo have always had their game prices be high anyway, with very few options for discount. I want a 3DS too, but if they are going to get greedy, they can forget it.

I own more 360 games because they drop in price. 3DS games will more than likely never be discounted, and I hate that idea.

DS games are priced pretty reasonably as it is and a slight increase is not that big of a deal. I'm sure developers will need to invest a lot more R&D to get their games working with the new tech so it will be a warranted hike if it happens.

@ Cowboy TTop

Your ignorance is amusing. Last I checked Wii games cost 10 dollars less than 360 or PS3 games and DS games are normally 5 to 10 bucks cheaper than PSP. As far as the games going down in price, that's the retailer's decision not Nintendo's, and if you follow the market on games at all you'd realize the reason Nintendo's 1st part games don't drop like most others is because they sell very well. When the game is stockpiled and no one's buying it you drop prices. If they are obviously selling millions of Mario Galaxy 2's, don't expect the price to drop until no one is willing to buy it anymore. Simple economics but judging by your grammar you probably haven't passed your Econ class.

I love how people are shitting on the guy for this. He didn't even say anything remotely inflammatory this time!

Like Jim said, he's probably right. I could see the system being in the 200 to 250 dollar range and I could see a few games even costing 50 bucks, although I expect the majority to be 40 or less.

Still, who wouldn't pay 50 bucks for MGS3 in 3D on the go?

Oh, and for the guys who say they could do his job and all that shit, well, go to college, get the appropriate degree or degrees and put the time in at the lower levels of one of the companies that do what he does, and eventually you'll get there too.

It's not out of reach for anybody who wants to give it a whirl.

I think the massive increase in the 3DS hardware will warrant at least a $5 increase in price. For some reason people are thinking the main allure of this new handheld is the 3D, when a lot of people (myself included) are pumped for the stronger hardware.

Isn't that, like, the price many publishers put to DS games any way?

Chrono Trigger? 40 bucks.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story? Two twenties.

Scribblenauts? A Grant minus Hamilton and a little Abraham.

It depends on the quality of the titles. $40 seems reasonable for new games. $20-$30 for budget new games.

If the games totally blow me away and are similar enough to console quality I would spend $50.

$250 at most. That is a reasonable price considering the power that little machine has. But either way it will sell like crazy no matter how much they charge, boy it must be good being a Nintendo share holder.

I wouldn't be surprised. I'm extremely happy with the upcoming 3DS titles, many of which I wouldn't mind buying $50 for. Nonetheless, if they were to charge that much for each title, that would be a problem for me, as I'm sure countless other 3DS anticipators.

On another note, can we stop posting Pachter's all-too-frequent video game speculations? Seriously, GT gave him his own web show? Pachter does not deserve to be on the same level as HAWP. Period. Another period.

£30 for the games (but will probably be more given how unreasonably expensive DS games are in England) and probably around £200 for the console.

The 3DS is going to cost $200, and software won't go over $40. Anything beyond those price points is ludicrous, to me.
