Good to know that there's ONE other person on Destructoid who has taste.
I'm just saying that most of the people who are ever going to buy this probably already know what they're buying.
SPOILERS incoming:
The plot was very vague and short. Although I did all side-quests (I followed a spoiler free faq that just pointed to persons to talk to in order to begin optional chapters), I had the game beat in 28 hours. Additionally, the story wasn't really all that interesting, and all too many plot elements seemed arbitrary or, well, lame.
The most important thing to me in RPGs is the story, and this game didn't have a very strong one. It never even really introduces you to the setting (aside from the island itself), and youre left with loads of questions even more if you didnt have the patience to read through books that you gain access to through the game (I cant recall if youre even told that you should probably go read these books).
The characters, although somewhat caricatured stereotypes, are cool, but you never really get to choose a team and commit to any of them, save for the main character, who you'll be stuck playing the for most parts of the game (you can't switch leader). There are even a couple of characters whose backgrounds remain untold, and we never get a clue as to why theyre fighting alongside the protagonist.
The city isn't really that big. As soon as I got the chance to, I explored it all. Took me about 30 minutes to explore every nook and cranny of the town, save for the few locations (essentially dungeons) that only unlock later in the game.
In many ways, the city-aspect of the game was reminiscent to AC's various cities (Rome, etc.), only not as fleshed out and with way fewer options and areas to explore and with no crawling up and down buildings, searching for glyphs and feathers and what not.
I was also very disappointed that you have no influence on your character's level development. You earn xp, you level, and your stats are automatically increased. You have no influence on how your characters level. At all. Not even skills. Nothing.
You have a myriad of weapons to choose from, though, and you can level them by visiting various shops. Unfortunately, the items you need to level your weapons and equipment are rather rare. Also, there are only, like, 5 different pieces of non-weapon equipment, which kinda nullified the whole idea in customizing your character's appearance by altering colors (you'll basically just find a color scheme that looks cool to that specific armor type, and stick to that).
The combat system of the game is really the only upside. Oh, and the various quests (although few, compared to Xenoblade) were not just kill/fetch quests, which was nice.
All in all, I'd give this game a 5 (1 being bad and 10 being great) so, its basically very, very mediocre. I'm a harsh judge, I know, but there are lots of better JRPGS out there. Xenoblade, for one, is much better, although it had its flaws as well.
Last Story is kinda interesting, it's got a well trodden plot but told pretty well and the combat is unusual, if not pushed as far as it should have been.
This is exactly how I feel about The Last Story. One of the biggest disappointments in years. In spite that I love JRPGs and absolutely adored every bit of Mistwalker's previous effort, Lost Odyssey.
@BoomingEchoes, as someone who is most likely going to buy this game, the preview was very helpful. I didn't bother reading up on the game too much before it was announced for the US because I rarely import games. I think the preview still has value for some people. However, I do acknowledge your point that a lot of people have already either played the game or at least familiarized themselves with it.
You guys really should have had this at least within 2 weeks of the European/Australian release.
Xenoblade is not the be all to end all JRPG this generation. While it did a lot of things right, the plot was even more formulaic than The last story and some of the twists were just downright retarded!!
On the plus side, it was the only game to give us dual audio
Game is short at about 20-25 hours but a great 20-25 hours.
"especially in light of this generations relative dearth of JRPGs."
What?
Its a fact in terms of total quantity theres been more than any other gen, so this statement comes off as silly
"while simultaneously experimenting with a bit of an upheaval of JRPG conventions coupled with modern contrivances."
I hate it when someone says this because its a filler statement thats never backed up
The wonderful thing about japanese rpgs is the fact that they use so many gameplay styles, art styles, worlds, characters, everything feels different......
Yo Stealth, saw you got owned on Kotaku. Good read :P
But I agree that action-based does not necessarily equal "forward". I love turn-based combat but there seems to be less RPGs these days (except for those on handhelds) that use such combat.
I never god owned on kotaku. Not ever. Basically what happens is the trolls came out of that site, and jason is a friend of mine and he told me to let it go so i did.
Most rpgs from japan are turn based. I am counting 4 being localized in june and 3 releasing
I was just teasing.
But I like those numbers, although Pokemon Conquest is the only one I can recall.
I'd say the order from best to worst with the Op Rainfall games is : Xenoblade Chronicles (fantastic game) > The Last Story (really fun) > Pandora's Tower (I hated it : boring as hell, couldn't motivate myself to finishing it, even past the middle point)
I thought Xenoblade--while solid, certainly--was insanely overhyped and overrated.
The Last Story looks like it's more for me.
Everyone! Kneel before his one, true opinion! Behold!
