The only Tekken I really thought was worth it was Tag, and I still dabble in Tekken ball every now and then.
Agree , I have a lot of good childhood memories of Tekken , and it's a casual fighting game at best , you can button mash or do 10 hit combos with Yoshimitsu , no middle ground ...
You're right about the 10-hit combos: they are absolutely rote memorization, but only the most refined players will be know how to defend/counter against them... Take a veteran Tekken player, and that Yoshimitsu 10-hit is damn-near useless against him. You'd better be able to improvise.
The same is true of the thousands of other moves, with their varying levels (high, mid, low), frame rates & priorities - That's where the Tekken franchise really shines, in the defense.
It's a lot like S.F. in that way, in my opinion, anyway. I think both franchises are excellent, in their own way.
HAHAHAHA!! I love this persistent Tekken argument: "It's all about 10-hits and combo memorization."
When people talk about 10-hits in ANY useful sense they make it plainly obvious that they don't know the first thing about Tekken.
Tekken's complexity is only surpassed by Virtua Fighter as far as 3D fighters goes. The more time you put into it, the more you see that the hitboxes AREN'T broken (you were probably playing someone who was good at sidestepping or you didn't have good execution yourself) and basically all canned combos are useless and are only in the game to make new players feel like they're doing something.
Tekken IS however one of the most UNFRIENDLY games to newcomers. Put someone who knows anything about the game against someone trying to learn and they WILL win 100 out of 100 matches regardless of the execution and reaction skill of the newcomer.
Oh, and by the way, EVERY fighting game is about memorization in some way. Street Fighter is no exception what with links, Focus Cancel combos and the air recovery system.
I'm in the boat with the people who say that Tekken becomes less fun and a tad broken the deeper you get into the game. Its not that Tekken isnt newcomer friendly... its just, well, never been that great (outside of Tag)
I've always felt Street Fighter, while a fun party game, was never anything I could get into. It's always been a cartoony version of a true fighting game. Cloned characters, no point to fighting styles except for animations; bleh.
I'll take me some Tekken anyday.
I still prefered the frantic action of Tekken 3 and Tag than the newer ones
I've seen the game in arcades and I dont know how people can still make such a huge fuss on a fighting game that is mostly the same as the previous one even when moving to next gen (well dynasty warriors is a different story i guess)
As a martial artist, i really REALLY want a realistic fighter for once. like an entire game devoted to a single style, without all those weapons and customization and fireball bullshit
I remember back when Tekken was big, I had to remember almost all a character or two's inputs to be better, and lord knows how those inputs are. But it was overall, a good game.
Soul Calibur is good because its a fantasy game and weapon based. Tekken on the other hand has suffered over the years, relying on past successes. Like VF, there's little more you can do, once you get to that kind of realism for a fighting game.
Remember Namco, overall it has to be accessible and fun, and if we've learned anything from Capcom and SFIV, its that Tekken has too many moves per character. With too many moves, fights can easily become a deluge of fists and feet, blindly button bashing. A set amount allows more focus and less crap mistakes, which is why SF has always been my fave.
For my PSP, I'm sure I'll get both though, especially if they have some mad online play. 360, maybe.
It's way more complex than any Capcom fighter...
I think the best evidence to the fact that this game is more than a button-masher is like DinnertimeNinja said: "Put someone who knows anything about the game against someone trying to learn and they WILL win 100 out of 100 matches regardless of the execution and reaction skill of the newcomer."*
* Eddy Gordo / Tiger / Christie Montoya characters not included.
But tekken is my baby. I'll be there playing it even if nobody else is.
No, they're included in my statement too. Sure, button mashing with them is flashy and looks cool but it's probably even less likely to net you a win against a good player than with other characters.
Every one of their strings that come out when mashed have telegraphed lows in them. So all you have to do is *block, block, low-parry, juggle* and you win.
If you actually do a 10-string against a half decent player, you will be ridiculed and laughed at continuously.
And the reason why most of you dont notice the differences with each instalment is because you are not familiar with the gameplay in the first place. All you guys probably do is buttonmash.
And this argument that tekken never changes can be applied to all the fighters; streetfighter, Virtuafighter, King of Fighters. Soul Calbur and Guilty Gear.
Hell, Streetfighter has had the same damn 5 moves for each character for the last 12 years, I dont see anyone complaining about that.
Also, if Tekken was so broken it would not be apart of all the EVO tournaments that have been held and Tekken 6: BR would not be the #1 most played fighter at Japanese and Korean arcades, yes its played and enjoyed more as a competitive game in Asian more so than SF4.
Before you guys try commenting on something, try to educate yourselves first otherwise you come off as an ignorant idiot. That goes for you as well Dyson.
Street Fighter IV... the actual producer and reviewers claimed how easy the game was to get into because it played so much like Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo. Same can be said with Guilty Gear X series, KOF, Virtua fighter.
Why would you even want a fighting franchise to change so much that it becomes something else entirely. I play Virtua Fighter to play virtua fighter. I don't want Air combos and hadoukens in that game. When I play Street Fighter I want to be able to flashy techniques and chain together normal attacks through mastering the frames of the game I don't want Dial-a-combos like KOF XI has.
You just have these fanboys from other franchises who don't know the first thing about the fighting mechanics of another franchise and then jump to the conclusion that it takes no skill to play said game because they got their ass whooped by a button mashing Eddy Gordo just because they don't know how to Block or low parry.
I love Street Fighter IV and the nostalgia it brings along with it's Focus attacks/cancels. I'm going to love Blazblue since it's a fresh new game yet it borrows heavily from Guilty Gear. I'll love KOF XII because of Critical counters and it's claim of being a reboot of a well loved series.
But really I hope to run into people online who think know a damn 10 hit combo is the apex of Tekken skill... Because when you come at me in Tekken 6 with a 10 hit combo I'm going to low parry, bound you and Juggle you across the screen and up against a wall for 12 or so hits before your character lays on the ground; where I will probably kill you ground game due to people of this calibur not taking the time to know when to get up and when not to get up. The first thing those people are goign to say after a beating like that, "this game is cheap." Just because they can't effectively throw escape, constantly juggle, or parry.
The same as a low calibur Street Fighter IV player whining about cross ups Focus cancels... or throws for that matter.
Either they will get frustrated or finally learn to play the game. Because I guarantee that most of the people posting here don't even know that Tekken has had a low parry system for ALL characters since Tekken 3.
In the end.. if this was a some other quality fighting game being bashes such as SF or GG or VF I would be defending it just the same way because I truly am a fan of the genre. The same as 90% of all 360 owners love 1st/3rd person shooters. I don't know what PS3 owners like.
And the Fact that the first thing Dyson said in his article was "I am not really much of a Tekken player" already makes him unqualified to comment on the combat system and makes his post/opinion entirely useless.
Very irresponsible if you ask me.
Also, basing an opinion on something without actually being able to understand what you are criticizing at a competent level makes you ignorant, and not much different from the fanboys.
I hope you take this as a learning experience Dyson, because we don't need anymore unreliable "journalists" or bloggers that misrepresent topics they are covering. You have a responsibility to be as accurate and knowledgeable as possible before you relay information or opinions to the masses.
Your post regarding this topic, clearly drives home the point that you do not understand that concept.
I am also a huge fan of the fighting genre, and I honestly find it silly to continually compare one game to the next, versus just appreciating the variations of fighting techniques they all individually provide us. I mean, seriously...2d fighting vs 3d fighting...causes massive differences. Both sfiv and tekken can be incredibly defensive games, just in two completely different ways...I think that should be painfully obvious.
I will admit though. I always had a lot of trouble with tekken. I'm am certainly not a veteran, probably never will be, but i still love it all the same. Yes, tekken is a game i have put down in frustration plenty, but instead of just saying "this is a clusterfuck of button mashing...If i cannot execute a 10 hit combo I'm useless, so what's the point?" Uhm...no...no, no, no. Instead I searched online battles of true tekken players who've dedicated their time and patience into mastering all tekken has to offer...and it's been very endearing! Seeing the possibilities only makes me work harder on my defense and timing. I defiantly don't consider Tekken a beginner friendly fighter, not if you plan on going head to head with people online. So anyone with a lack of patience will probably give tekken the cold shoulder and turn to more adaptable games such as SFIV. Don't get me wrong. I love me some street fighter! Just for completely different reasons.
