Have I posted this video already? I feel like I have. Louis CK is awesome. That's all, really.

Tonight, Aaron, Jim, Topher and I will discuss Jack Thompson's disbarrment, what future MGS games might be like without Kojima, piracy as the great equalizer, and this month's Musings topic.

As always, give us your questions and Siegelpuns; the best question-asker will be rewarded with some neat swag, and the best Siegelpun-deliverer will have theirs read by Aaron at the top of the show.

Get to goin'.

Have you watched the Louis CK sitcom that was on HBO? I guess it got canceled, but it was a great show!

Also, what do you expect from the next MGS game? Where would you guys like to see the series go from here? What settings and time periods within the MGS universe pique your interest the most? Do you think there is any room for improvement in terms of the core gameplay that was established in MGS4? Would you be interested in playing full-fledged 3D remakes of the original MGS games, in terms of story, setting, and characters?

Let's say Kojima's free to do something else now. What game do you want to see him do? You can make up some hilarious-awesome thing, or just cop out and say "Snatcher remake/sequel."

SIEGELPUN: If you hate cutscenes, this fourth game will grind your Metal Gears!

How do you deal with the yearly onslaught of games around this time of year?

There simply isn't enough time to play everything coming out. Personally I'm going for a select few at release date (Fallout, Gears 2, Guitar Hero and Left 4 Dead), and will enjoy the rest through out the year when they are cheaper.

Unfortunately this means I'm overlooking games like Dead Space, Fable 2 and Far Cry 2 (all out on the same day!), and my pre-order trigger-finger is starting to get itchy...

"Star Wars: A Shorter Leash Than Expected"

Well that sucked. Do you think with Jack Thompson being disbarred any other anti-video game critics will step in to take his place? Or will he continue to work behind the scenes influencing others as a self-proclaimed "martyr"?

I guess in summary I'm asking if you think there's anyone else out there with the chutzpah to be the next Jackie T.

Why not discuss whether or not Kojima will stop making MGS. He said this is his last, but are there any differences between that statement and the statements he's made after 2 and 3? I think this may be his last MGS, since it was the last in the storyline. Also, where do we want the MGS series to go next. I'd personally like a WWII setting with The Boss as the playable character.

Question:
With Metal Gear being discussed again, it reminded me of something I often thought about when MGS4 came out. So many people complained of the length and frequency of the cut scenes, arguing there should have been more "gameplay".

At the time, and since, this got me thinking: Are we sometimes "missing the forest for the trees", so to speak? What I mean is, (and this continues from my insistence on thinking about how we "bound" concepts" in games), Why should we necessarily care how many cut scenes there are, or how long they are in a game like MGS4? We who love MGS do so mostly because of the insane but awesome story and characters, because of Solid Snake, Ocelot, Otacon, etc.

MGS4 was a closing to a story, of characters, and so on. I thought it was amazing, and I really don't care if could have "played" more of it. Is not what counts that you enjoyed your time with the product? That it was fulfilling in some way?

I guess what I'm asking is could not " video games" SOMETIMES (and I DO stress sometimes) be a much looser concept if the end result is as awesome as the MGS series? Do you think devs are restricting themselves in this sense? Are we in turn restricting ourselves in this sense?

I mean, look at what Soulja Boy said.

With Jack Thompson losing the bite to go along with his barking, do you think he will continue to challenge and harass the gaming community? Also, having removed (for the most part) one nemesis, how long it take for another to rear its ugly head, and what form will it take?

Sorry Jim, but Reggie "Meat Bag" Fil-Aime does not count.

What's so horrible about "casual gaming"? I mean sure, it looks like hardcore gaming is starting to turn into a niche market, but an expansion of the gaming industry overall is going to turn into a good thing. I'd rather have a crapload of "Braids" made by 1 person on a relatively smaller budget, compared to a million and five "Assassin's Creeds" made by hundreds, but turning out to be <s>totally</s> 90% shit.

The Fall '08 gaming season is filled to the brim with games that look as if they're going to be fantastic. Unfortunately, most gamers simply don't have the free capital on hand to purchase all of these releases, and rentals don't bring in any significant revenue for the developer/publisher. Could quality in quantity actually be bad for all of these games?

In other words, if consumers have to make limited picks from this litter of games, does that in turn hurt the sales of all these games, and in turn possibly the development of future games due to loss of sales revenue?

Are bad games necessary?

Is that friend of the Podtoid's hosts, Luc Bernard, merely emulating Kojima in terms of his return to videogames? Or does it do gaming in general a disservice by comparing the Metal Gear Solid franchise to the Eternity's Child series - a series that apparently was never set to exist?

Also, could Jim say "I am the Dream Weaver who weaves dreams" in either his Liquid Snake or Albert "David Bowie" Wesker voice?

I'm going to try to make my above question less convoluted:

Regarding "gameplay" or lack thereof: Could THE moment in MGS4, you know, the one where you only hit 1 button but it manages to carry the weight of the entire series on it's back, have been possible without all the character development and story-context provided by all of the series' previous cut scenes? Could such a moment have been created purely through "gameplay"?

I think not, which is worth thinking about.

Blizzard's phasing technology is a big deal for MMOs.

If you haven't read about it yet, Blizzard is upgrading their server architecture for Wrath of the Lich King to allow what they call "phasing", which seems to be a way to move players into and out of private "instances" seamlessly. No loading, no transition. What this means is that a player can be moved into an intance without even realizing it. Inside these private instances, scripted events can play out without disrupting the experience of any other players nearby.

I don't know if any cast members are current or former WoW players, but if so, what do you think of this new technology and its potential impact on storytelling in an MMO? For any cast members who don't play WoW, would a move toward heavier story focus (possibly enabled by this new technology) make you consider MMOs as worth your time?

A lot of games are doing the whole RPG as a sub genre thing, Castle Crashers had level ups even Bioshock has RPG elements what genre do think goes best with RPG elements?

Of all the games coming out this year what game do you think will be the biggest disappointment?

Mirrors Edge (a first person platformer) got me thinking if you guys could see any other genre put in the first person perspective what would it be?

What's the deal with WiiWare? While a few interesting things are coming up, there's usually no warning of good or bad apps coming to the system, and once they do, the pricing is such that most people are very hesitant to try it out.

Is this more backward beefburger brainstorming or the well-meaning will of the WiiWare warlords?

I'd like to hear everyone's response to Lowenstein's comments on the gaming world's treatment of Jack Thompson. I've already heard Jim's words on the topic, but, what about the rest of you? I feel that the handling of Jack was perfect for the community at large; as I said in the comments of the story, everyone needs a villain. Thompson came along at the right time to act as a perfect representation of what other conservative-minded folks see games as. Because of this, we were able to take Jack's words and misconceptions and put them in a more truer light, to help out any who might've seen his words as law. Plus, the gaming community was able to come together and put a stop to his crazy antics BECAUSE we all knew who he was; if no one reported on him, he could've gotten away with his witch hunt on gaming, to some extent. I'll say it again; God bless Jack Thompson, I hope he rots in hell.

Also, for a Siegel pun: There's no roundabout way for Jack Thompson to object to his firing this time!

We are heading into a gaming spree of great games coming in the next weeks.
At the same time the financial situation is deteriorating and I dont know anyone who is not afraid.
Questions:

Do you think this will hurt sales of these new titles?
Do you see big publishers start cutting projects due to a lack of credit?
Dont you believe that the gaming industry should stop giving us all this great games all at once and understand that if the game is good you are going to play it even if it comes out on August or May?

Jim,

You may want to reconsider your plans to move stateside. Our economy appears to be sailing a sieve down Shit River, and its bilge pump is fresh out of petrol. If the US of A were, say, Rome, Nero would be fiddling faster than the DOW is dropping.

The House of Representatives just shot down the 700 billion dollar bailout plan, and there appears to be no resolution of the credit fuck up in sight. I suggest brushing up on a bit of Cantonese, or doing tech support in India, or moving to any country that actually produces a tangible product instead of massive, tax-payer crushing debt.

D. won

Why doesn't the podtoid crew call those silly movie puns "ShalitPuns". Joel Seigel never used puns, and in fact, I would say his cricitisms on movies are insignificant. The man is dead anyhow, and should remain as obscure as possible. Gene Shalit, however, is still making awful puns about movies.

Also, now that games like Bionic Commando Re-Armed are out, and providing a new look for an old game in a positive way, and games like Mega Man 9 provide new retro content, what games do you think deserve a new look with new graphics but intact gameplay, or a return to a retro look? I myself would like to see Metal Gear 1 and 2 (MSX versions) with 3d graphics but intact gameplay.

When will gamers and games "journalists" stop making a fuss about graphic fidelity and instead begin looking to the art? This question comes from how I personally am sick of reading every wii preview/review which even for top tier wii titles like Super Mario Galaxy, Brawl, Corruption, Conduit, Deadly Creatures, etc, will always say "The graphics are good...for a wii game" or in some cases we see responses like Samit's preview of deadly creatures where he would rather the game was on an HD system.

Its a given that fidelity is worth something, however would Metal Gear Solid 4 have been a worse game if it was only as high res as say Ninja Gaiden Black on the original Xbox or Metroid Prime 3 on Wii? I think it would have been just as good.

Am I the only gamer who looks at art and ignores fidelity? Am I the only man who thinks that Bioshock isn't as beautiful as Okami? Am I waiting in vain for people to see the art of games and not the tech specs? Would you kindly answer me this?
