Quantcast

I don't know who's more adorable, Cookie Monster or Elizabeth Blair.

After a false start last week, we're back to talk about the news of the past fourteen days. Even though Jim is gonna be on a plane and even if Linde is too hard at work on BonerQuest to show up, we shall still persevere with the help of Samit Sarkar.

We'll be discussing all the stuff from last week (the new DS, NBA Live 365), along with some new stuff (Molyneux gets humble, Starcraft 2, and so on).

I'll be perusing last week's post for good questions as well as this week's, so if you have something super-awesome you asked last Monday then take comfort in the fact that we will personally read and ignore it before the show starts. For the rest of you, though, feel free to post new questions and Siegelpuns™ in the comments below.

I would like to know what you guys think about EA sticking to their guns over the SecuROM in the new C&C game. Have they not learned anything from the Spore backlash?

Sure they upped the install limit to a whopping 5, but I feel that it is still infringing on consumer rights and the First Sale doctrine (by giving it no resale value).

I think video games are an art form. I will assume you feel the same way. What are 3 reasons why this is the case?

My reasons:
The art involved in creating a game. From realistic graphics to minimalist drawing and animation. It's art!

Creating a game design and building a formula of play is an art form in its own right. Not anyone can do this!

Interaction, many modern art forms do this, from the viewer moving pieces of a sculpture to entering and using whole installation pieces. What is so different about video games.

Whats your guys' take on the retooling of indy games for consoles (i.e. cave story, Orbient, World of Goo, etc.). On one hand the argument could be made that it ruins the games because part of being indy is the strange idea that only a select few can love something, on the other hand this means that the creators of these classic titles (again: Cave story, world of goo) are finally getting some money for all their incredible work. What is your take(s) on this?

How are YOU dealing with the economic crisis all over the world in terms of gaming?
Are you cutting back on newer titles?
renting?
or going back in time and getting older games you never got around to playing?

or anything else?

Ok, I'm gonna go find my question from last week...
Gonna need you to remember how you felt about "gamer grub" last week:

"Yes, I'm talking about the term gamer AGAIN:

Doesn't shit like "Gamer Grub" support my (admittedly a little tiresome by this point) opinion that the term "gamer" is both unnecessary and lame? That its more of a marketing term than anything else? "Gamer Grub"? "Gamer Vitamins"? Are you fucking kidding me?

Remember that retarded study that told us "gamers" are not fat, but they are stoners? Why do think people even thought of doing that study? Because people think "gamers" are an identifiable mass entity, not individual fans of a medium.

Look to the future, think about how all the lameness with the term "gamer" attached to it is only going to grow exponentially. You will most likely agree with me eventually, even if you think it's stupid now.

(this is the last time I'll mention this, promise)

"Concerns about littlebigplanet's focus"

I realise i may be in a minority, but every time i see or hear about new user-designed content in littlebigplanet, i get a twinge of concern. It seems that the thrust of the game will be based around these user-contributions with little discussion around the content provided by the developers. As someone who feels that part of the reason i'm willing to pay 50 pounds (around 80-100 dollars depending on the exchange rate's latest gyrations) is that i'm paying for a professional game designer to show me their abilities.

How does the podtoid crew feel about LBP? Does the potential lack of a coherent individual vision concern you or are those concerns outweighed by the creative scope of the game? Am i misunderstanding the entire point of LBP and it is in fact an entirely user-created 'sandbox' game?

Thought i'd give this question a title as it's long and rambling so on the off chance it gets asked on air, theres at least some kind of shorthand for it's content.

Siegelpun: If you love adventure games, you'll go crazy for Pyschonauts!

I know the use of the word 'pyscho' in that sense isn't all that proper, but I think it is used as slang for crazy...

My pun isn't great, but I'm terrible at these sorts of things.

Just a rephrasing of Dexter's question basically, but I was wondering what games you're most looking forward to this holiday season. Maybe pick your top three.

Also, what is your favorite curse word? Mine's cuntmissile.

Also, i wanted to ask a question about Halo Wars. I'm a huge fan of real-time strategy but my PC has fallen behind technologically and the thought of an RTS built from the ground up for a console is quite tantalising.

Does anyone else have hope that this game will prove the viability of console RTS games and show that we're in the same situation as when no-one thought a console FPS would work, or is the gamepad and analog sticks just too limited and too imprecise to ever truly match a mouse and keyboard for RTS games?

By the way, i've seen a few gameplay videos and i'm still not convinced it's going to work....but hope springs eternal so i've still got my fingers crossed.

"This week's wiiWare title is definitely in a world of GOOd"

Now that I have that out of the way, it's question time.
How do you guys feel about how much the games industry tends to create sequels, ports and remakes of existing game franchises?

I'm not complaining about developers making these games as long as they are good, and I understand that sequels of successful franchises are a financially safe bet, but I can't help but feel that if developers spent less of their energy making sequels and ports that they might instead focus their time developing and marketing new and creative IP's.

What are your thoughts on this?

Siegel Time;

No WAY in HELL should you play the latest Brothers in Arms game!

Less Seigel;

That game is seriously shit. If Infinite Undiscovery is the demonstration of a overly cliche RPG, then BIA is its WWII counterpart.

I'm determined to one day make a game entitled "Pew Pew Brothers in Combat of Honor: Road to Hitlerville", a completely historicly inacurate depiction of WWII with Nazi vampires, Machine-gun-legs-FDR and the battle of Normandy fought entire by you, Daft Punk, and a time traveling dog. Would Linde Games™ publish it?

Non-gaming question: How do you guys feel about Cookie Monster's recent change in not eating cookies much anymore? Is it really going to help with childhood obesity, or is it another nail in the coffin that is my childhood?

Gaming Question: Have the editors thought of making a Destructoid themeed level in LBP, and if so, what would it be like?

Question for Samit:

I haven't played a good sports game since the old 8/16 bit eras (NHL 94, John Madden 93, Tecmo Super Bowl, RBI Baseball) and I was wondering what you would recommend to someone who enjoys sports games but doesn't like the complexity of the controls in most modern current-gen sports games. I've tried Madden 09 and that was an exercise in frustration just trying to pick a play, though I do enjoy NHL 09's dual stick configuration.
