Owners complain that Mad Catz Standard Edition Fight Stick's joystick is sticky photo

Reports of a clinging issue in Mad Catz’s lower cost Standard Edition Fight Stick joystick are emerging. Members of the Shoryuken message board -- a forum specifically designed for the hardcore Street Fighter player -- has the widest berth of complaints, ranging from broken buttons to the more popular sticky joystick issue. The complaints indicate the joystick sticks in its former diagonal position instead of snapping back to the neutral zone.

A normal human could weather this issue, but a Street Fighter elite is obviously perturbed. Several of the members of the forum have ripped open their SE Fight Sticks aware that it also voids their warranty. One brave user claimed to have found the problem: “[There] is a small metal washer [between] the body of the joystick and spring cap. [The] washer moves around and the plastic spring cap gets stuck on the grooves where the washer is supposed to sit.”

He later said that he was able to fix the problem with superglue and sandpaper -- the same two tools that McGuyver used to escape from a Congo prison.

Even though the Shoryuken message board would be the second place I would go if I experienced an issue -- I would run crying to my mother’s house first -- I’m having a hard time believing that sticky sticks will be a nationwide issue. Game Crazy is holding my SE Fight Stick hostage right now, so I can’t confirm if my stick is indeed sticky. Have you guys been experiencing any problems?

Their fault for buying a "standard" edition.

I'd suggest getting the same McGuyver to sort that problem out.

This is sad news indeed. It really seemed lik MadCatz was getting glose to fixing their "poor-construction" stigma with their line of Rock Band goods and these new Street Fighter accessories. Word is good on the high-end Tournament sticks and 6-button pads. Hope this is just a fluke, and not a return to form.

Damn you, Madcatz, you asked for a chance to believe you were going to change as a company!

This is not the kind of thing I need to hear while waiting patiently to drop $190 CDN (love the exchange rates...) on my TE stick. :S

*crosses fingers and hopes for the best*

Why were the STREET FIGHTER ELITE!! using the standard stick? Surely these golden gods of the gaming world would only settle for the Tournament Edition?

I fucking hate hardcore fighter fans.

What's the point of condescending to Shoryuken in this piece? Do you think you have a greater mastery of the subject than the people who live and breathe this stuff?

Also, you refer to it as a location 'specifically' for the 'Street Fighter player', when it's actually a generalized website for the American competitive fighting game player, and for the longest time, this translated into Marvel Vs Capcom 2.

As for your your last claim, I really don't put it beyond Madcatz to have fucked up these standard sticks, especially if they designed them themselves unlike the TE. Just think back to games like Rock Band or even further back to things like the NES Zapper.

It's a simple fix. Warranty or not I expected this to happen with a MadKatz product that's made from their own parts. Half if not most of SRK already has parts ordered (including a new JLF joystick) anyway.

Also, that washer is rubbing away the contacts. Brad, I suggest ordering Sanwa buttons and a JLF stick. They're easy to replace and much better. And you get the arcade authenticity without the MadKatz gayness.

I'm not "offended". People who watch Oprah get "offended". Brad just sounds like an uninformed cunt in this article.

Yeah, Shoryuken can sometimes be a bit Elite-ist but that doesn't mean this is a problem that will only effect "elite" players.

If your brand new stick was sticking in the diagonal direction while you're trying to play a game (any game) I'm sure you'd be right pissed.

Also, anyone else think it's funny that people are complaining that their sticks are "stick-y?"

Why would anyone trust Mad Catz?! They suck for a decade, release a new PR statement "we ares new mad catz" and everyone believes them? They should be out of business :D

I can confirm that the joystick is indeed a P.O.S.

It is very sticky; It will get stuck in a position instead of snapping into neutral very often. It requires you to give a slight nudge to get it back into the neutral position.

Good thing I ordered a replacement stick to swap it out with already.

I just popped out on my lunch break to pick up my Chun-li Fightpad. It looks to be put together pretty well, although I haven't opened it up yet. Hopefully it won't turn out to be doodoo. It better be great, as the fellow at Gamestop informed me that I'm probably not getting my TE stick until March 11th.

Sanwa buttons and JLF stick! It'll run you 50-70 but at least you'll pretty much have a TE stick and it won't die on because of crappy parts.

I have a better solution: get a custom stick that uses Happ parts. Problem solved. :^)

The other half of this story, is that the nice little metal washer that is out of place causing the stick to get stuck, also wears away the protective covering on the PCB for the joystick microswitches!

So the more you use your stick, the more you could be destroying the internal workings. If your stick gets stuck, don't keep playing with it! Call mad catz and ask for a replacement.

Or just void the warranty like me and replace all the parts anyways.

Fuck that shit...Im not spending and additional $50-$90 to get what Madcatz promises for $80....

I'll just get a HORI for like $120(ready right out of the box)

The reason people put faith in MadCatz again is because MarkMan was helping design these sticks. I think its a costly mistake on MadCatz part to let this defect get put into production and unfortunately I do not believe you will get a new stick anytime soon due to the sheer amount of pre-orders alone. I think MadCatz did a good job on the TE stick so at least it is something.

That's because its not MadKatz parts in the TE stick >.>

Also HORI sticks have HORI buttons not sanwa or seimetsu. And yes it's $120 and worth it. I still prefer the quiet sanwas compared to the loud hollow sound of hori buttons.

If you're a Fighting Game Fanatic, don't buy MadCatz shit. I have a pal that loves buying off-brand equipment for his consoles, and more often than not, they break.. from minimal use. I had a fight stick for my Dreamcast when Soul Caliber was new, and I never had an issue with it.. I think it was a Pelican stick? wow I can't remember.. maybe I should dig in the closet for it.
yeah.. if you consider yourself a "pro" at street fighter, don't buy a madcatz stick. Look around, find a company who's known for making durable and reliable products.. Sometimes you can find a cheaper one that out performs the cheapo off brands.
