Over a dozen X-Play staffers laid off, shows to decrease in March [Update] photo

Word has it that G4 handed pink slips to over a dozen X-Play staff members this afternoon. We’re hearing that the layoffs precede a show slowdown -- only a few episodes will air weekly, with reruns filling in the gaps between new stuff.

Confirmation seemingly came from G4’s games editorial manager Abbie Heppe, who tweeted the sad news around an hour ago. She mentioned that her last day with X-Play will be March 2. (She has since deleted the tweet.)

In December, G4 messed with X-Play’s length, bringing it to a hefty hour with an emphasis on humor and increased analysis. It was presented three times over the course of a week. In January, G4’s president Neil Tiles wrote that the goal of the experiment was to make the “60 minute daily show trial period a permanent format at some point in 2009.” He added later that the reason G4 didn’t have more than two videogame related shows was “... simply due to the fact that the gaming shows in the past didn’t have enough people watching them to support continuing them.”

[Update: According to a G4 statement to Kotaku, X-Play will go down to three original weekly shows starting March 2.]

G4 is returning AOTS and X-Play to their former production schedules and, starting March 2nd, AOTS will air 4 originals per week and X-Play 3 originals per week. While the company does not comment on personnel matters, we can confirm that producing fewer episodes has resulted in a decrease in staff. Savings resulting from this move will go directly towards producing more original programming in 2009. This is not a budget cut. G4 remains dedicated to these core franchises.

Hopefully this is a sign of G4's closing. Please, let that channel die.

That's pretty sad, however I think that it is mainly the fault of the production values of the show have 'increased' while the quality has seemed to decrease. I used to watch it almost everyday it aired, but as time went on it seemed that I could get a larger amount of news (and comedy) and faster online, without having to sit through some terrible skits. The focus on humor was not their strong point and should have remained as a show just about the reviews and videogames. Also, they're not laying off thousands like EA or other companies which is even more depressing.

Hmm... That kinda sucks. I hope those people that got fired get back on their feet soon.

I don't watch X-Play anymore, but I like both Adam and Morgan. It would be nice to see them doing other stuff if the show is canceled.

Depressing. It's hard to sympathize with G4's "video game programming", but people losing jobs in the industry sucks. If only they could've found success in the early Tech TV days and gone a more substantial gaming/geek culture route.

Once I got the internet, I quit TV. But X-Play was a great show, I really liked their reviews. And Adam's "Sessler's Soapbox" podcast is pretty interesting.

This is very depressing. Video gaming is having less and less of a precense on cable t.v. It's mostly due to lack of competent programming and lack of support. As it stands, Gametrailers T.V. is the only worth-while gaming t.v. show still on the air. I hope it continues to get good enough ratings.

sad to hear , but truth be told I stopped watching G4 a long time ago, the last thing I remember watching was the E3 coverage

I still don't understand why they can't do a service like this via XBL. This is the kind of content Live needs. PSN has its own show, but I'd still love to see this content through my console.

Oh well, acorns don't fall too far from the tree.

I like G4, only for Xplay and AOTS though. Don't watch it any more since all the channels i watched were on premium cable and the cost wasn't worth it.
G4 really ought to bring back some of the TechTV shows. Cut back on having a video game focus and more of a geekdom kind of thing in general. Turn it into an anti-MTV

Hopefully everyone laid off gets back to work soon.

I couldn't get into G4 original programming at all. It seemed patronizing to me. I don't mind Ninja Warrior reruns or Unbeatable Bansuke though. I really miss TechTV and I'm still disappointed that the G4 content replaced what little of TechTV was left when they merged briefly a few years ago.

I'll concur with the suck assertion. I, like so many, watched less when it became G4, gave up on X-Play when I had reliable internet, and eventually lost interest in AOTS. Frankly, I'm getting tired of trying to 'decode' statements made my any form of management. I just assume they're all 90% B.S. now.

damn it all. where are all these people going to get jobs. more game companies need to stay with it. there are some good people out there now.

Can't say it wasn't expected. When TechTV went down, it was pretty much the same. It's not like most of the people that would have watched the channel anyway have switched over to podcasts and other forms of internet-based news.

I've never gotten G4 on any cable plan that I've ever had (then again, my parents were the ones who got cable in the first place), so I don't really care.

Oh, yeah. My condolences to those that lost their jobs, hope they get new ones soon.

That sucks but come on, you couldn't see this coming? All they show is Cheaters and Cops. For days straight. WTF this isnt the Court TV Drama station!

It's sad that it's become what it is. I want Icons and Code Monkeys back as well as a few other shows in favor of the garbage they have now.

"Cops...cops....cops....cheaters...cops....cops....more cheaters... hey code monkeys!... cops.... more cops..."

Icons was awesome when it was about video game industry people. When they switched it to regular Hollywood actors, it got super lame.

Now that they're doing less shows per week, maybe they'll make each airing more dense with content instead of full of filler nonsense.

G4 used to be a cool channel...
A long time ago, the network actually aired programs that related to video games, go figure... Right?
Now it's full of shit, like Cops and Cheaters. Why?!
Attack of the Show is pretty lame... Except for Chris Gore and his DVD segment. X-Play is really the only reason to watch this damned network.
Video games are a billion dollar industry and the suits that own the channel can't figure out to make it any better?! Come on guys! Is it really that complicated?
Produce more game related shows...
Bring back Electric Playground and Blister, please.
This channel can be saved, dammit!

XPlay has been in steady decline since Tech Tv merged with the SHITBOX that was G4. For awhile the merger didn't seem that bad, but then AOTS became less like Call for Help and more like TRL and they dropped Tech Tv from the title of the station and it was all shit from then on out. When Kevin Perera is the LEAST douchey person on your show you've got issues.

it does suck but this is what happens when they tout a video game channel and just have shitty movies and crappy tv shows that have nothing to do with gaming. i miss the old g4, when i could turn it on and watch video game cinema and cheats, now they just show cheaters, those redneck breaking things that could have donated to goodwill, stupid human acts and the same 6 episodes of cops. fuck them, they made their bed and can lay in it.

Doesn't G4 only have two shows AOTS and X-Play? So now they have one and a half i guess.

Why do they have to continue to keep destroying that channel? Now a bunch of people have to lose their jobs because G4 thinks they can't fill 5 shows a week with gaming or geek content?

THE INTERNET IS FULL OF IT. GET OFF YOUR LAZY ASSES AND FIND IT!

Call is SpikeTv 2 and be done with it already.

it's nothing short of miraculous that this 'network' (and i use that term lightly) has lasted this long to begin with.

(laughing) two shows (AOTS and X-Play) do not make a network and anyone with half a brain knows this is the beginning of the end.

X-Play and specifically the work of Adam Sessler has been and remains the only reason G4 still stands.

Tech TV was awesome, G4 was shit, when G4 ate Tech TV instead of taking the awesome and using it, they took their shit and laid off awesome, useful people like Leo Laporte and kept Morgan Webb and Adam Sessler, who provide a service that is much better found at sites like, I don't know... Destructoid?

And I don't have to watch terrible skits that claim to be funny. Yeah, hard choice to make.

after I got the internet, it soon became apparent that there was no point in watching a tv show about video games
